Duels

Duels have long been a way to honorably settle disputes between nobles; recently the practice has been picked up by commoners as well, albeit in a somewhat new form and role to settle dispuetes within and between Granmont's street gangs.
Nobles duel with blades, commoners duel with pistols. This is more a reflection of the classes respective views on the weapons than anything, with nobles preferring the elegant tradition of a rapier or estoc and gangsters being more forward-facing towards the indiscriminate technology of firearms.

Protocols

    • Demand satisfaction; for nobles this is often an accusation of dishonesty or dishonor, for gangs it's often a turf dispute or disagreement. If the other party relents and apologises satisfaction is had and there's no need for further escalation.
    • Otherwise, both individuals choose seconds who meet to attempt to deescalate. For minor disputes between nobles or internal conflicts within a gang this is where most disputes die. If neither party backs down, the seconds will schedule the duel. There is no standard for time or place.
    • Just prior to the duel the seconds are sent together once again to try one last time to settle the score without bloodshed.
    • For pistol duels, combatants typically start ten paces apart. For blades, the duelists begin just at the edge of striking range. The duel begins as soon as both contestants are in place.
    • As the goal of duels is to obtain satisfaction or restore honor rather than to kill the duel ends when the loser is bloodied.
