Diversity
In addition to Humans, Granmont has major populations of
Halflings,
Gnomes,
Dwarves, and
Goblins. There are also significant amounts of
Gnoll,
Kobolds,
Catfolk,
Ogre,
Trolls, and
Orc. Almost any ancestry not listed here can still be found in the city, but not in large enough numbers to form enclaves or be a common sight.
Birth/Death Rates
Like most medieval cities, Granmont's death rate exceeds its birth rate. More people die each year to illness, violence, or old age than are born each year. Granmont's population is maintained, and even grows, from immigration. Country bumpkins and subterranean dwarves come to the city to work in the mines. College graduates from around the world move to the city for a few years to try to earn their fortune in
Camino.
Citizenship
Status as a "citizen of Baudelaire" is required to exercise certain rights, including land ownership, priority and preferential treatment with respect to law and finance, and guild membership. Those born in the city to citizens have this privilege by default. All others need to jump through some hoops. Military or clerical service is the most common, and having money doesn't hurt.
