Church of the Golden Flame
Few institutions are as meaningful or storied as the Church of the Golden Flame. For centuries, the Church has been an emissary of all that is good on the material plane. Only through kindness tempered by strength can salvation be achieved.
As the Church is fond to preach, Man Is Fallable. And the clergy is no exception. Even among the genuinely faithful are those who have grown jaded and cynical. Diverging from the just path, these flames of goodness smothered by the corruption of the big city turn to carnal comforts. Putting their own well being over the tenets they swore to upkeep, the most far gone of these heretics have metastasised throughout the church making it difficult to stomp them out.
The Church is organized into three divisions--each of which operates with a high degree of independence--plus the Inquisition, which possess a greater deal of freedom and stands separate from otherwise rigid hierarchy of the Church.
Eleemosynars
As the "corporal kindness" branch of the Church, the Eleemosynars are the branch that specializes in acts of charity and comfort. Headed by Bishop Simone Basselet, the Eleemosynars operate out of the Cathedral of St Cateline.Abjucators
As the Eleemosynars look out for the physical health of the city, the Abjucators bear responsibility for the salvation of its very soul. Chief-Inquisitor Claude Depardieu operates the Abjucators from The Beacon.Inquisitors
Though they don't get called into action often, the corruption that has recently come to light in Granmont has drawn the purging flames of the inquisition. Just as a medical doctor aboard a warship has the authority to overrule even the captain if health is affecting his judgment, Inquisitors outrank even Archbishops in matters related to their Inquisition. The inquisition lacks a dedicated base, instead working wherever they can. Individual inquisitors have a great deal of independence, and so a heavily centralized base is unneeded, especially as they never stay in one place for long. These uber-devout zealots are among the most faithful members of the church. Yet they intimidate even their fellow clergy. Those who look for shadows tend to find them; inquisitors see the worst in everyone and everything, and will turn the use the slightest transgressions as kindling for grandiose accusations of heresy.Missionaries
With the former two branches caring for the physical and spiritual health of the city, Missionaries look to the horizon. This branch of church travels beyond the threshold of the city and the borders of Pouleyron to share the Church's good fortune and salvation with the wider world. Following Pygmygate, which say Archbishop Afonso stripped of his powers, Bishop Porcher, Vicar-General of the Ring of Tutelar, is the interim head of this branch."Repent!
