Daniel Whitewave Weaver

Lord Daniel (né Ironwood) Whitewave Weaver

Content Warning: Suicide.   One of the most infamous criminals of our time, Daniel Whitewave ripped the city of Byworth apart, killing himself and around a thousand innocents. He is the father of King Leonard Whitewave Alderley.

Early Life

Birth and Childhood

Daniel Ironwood Whitewave was born to Daniel Ironwood and Sophia Whitewave in their High Valley mansion. According to some of their former servants, his father spent as much time as he could manage in Byworth, entertained by prostitutes and other base pleasures. At home with her son, Lady Sophia was highly critical of this behavior and raised a son who would never engage in such debauchery.   The younger Daniel was characterized by his former servants as being quiet, polite, and kind to them, occassionally having tea in the servants' quarters. They also say he often suffered from migraines and sometimes refused to leave his bed. He and Matthew Rosmors Colbreak, who was his own age and reportably rather shy, were close friends from early childhood. His younger sister Kaitlin said that her brother was often withdrawn, but always kind and protective of her.

Education

Like all Paragons of his rank, Daniel Ironwood Whitewave was educated at Everdon Academy. He generally excelled in his studies, with a few stray failures around the middle of his school career.   At age fifteen after a suicide attempt, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and placed on psychiatric medication. According to his medical records, his psychatrist at the time claimed that the second medication tried was highly effective.   At Everdon, he and Lord Matthew met Alana Greengale Redbreak, who would eventually marry Matthew. There are a few photographs of the three at Lady Alana's family's cabin together.   He graduated in 1267 near the top of his class. His teachers noted that he was charming through subdued, and when he spoke, he spoke well--both high complements from Everdon teachers.

Adulthood

Marriage and Children

My sister was hard to ignore, I'll give her that, and I think Lord Daniel liked her ideals. He had a soft spot for us Amalgams and Dregs. But he didn't want to devote his whole life to politics. He wanted a family, and peace and quiet--that's what he told me. But Willa wasn't much for peace and quiet.
— Jay Weaver, Willa's sister, in an interview with Crathlia Today
Other than Lady Alana, who, raised in the mountains, was an exception in of herself, Lord Daniel took no interest in fellow noble women. After graduation, he languished at his family's mansion, unsure of his direction in life. Presumably this is when he met Willa Cartwright Weaver, a music minister at the High Valley Cathedral where he attended worship. She sought him out and courted him, to the noblity's distaste. They were married in 1267, and set themselves up in a house on the outskirts of High Valley.   After their marriage, Lord Daniel gave several parties and gatherings in support of the Amalgam right to vote for Senate, among other things. It was speculated that he would run for Senate, though he had little support from any Paragon group. He also established Willa's law practice, which took on cases relating to Amalgam issues.   When their first child, Leonard Weaver Whitewave, was born in 1269, they both retreated from public life temporarily. Willa was the first to return, throwing herself completely into her work. King Leonard reports that it was Lord Daniel who was primarily at home during his young childhood.   By the time their second child, Murna, was born in 1271, Lord Daniel was rarely seen outside the house, and his wife's lawyer practice was failing, brought down by non-noble Paragons who disagreed with Willa's activism.

Destruction of Byworth and Suicide

Lord Daniel was on psychiatric medication when they first met--that was something we knew about him going in, that he wasn't totally stable, but it always seemed like it was pretty controlled to me. I wouldn't have known if he hadn't told us. But a couple years into their marriage, Willa told me the medicine had stopped working and they were trying something different. They tried like five different things in the span of a year. Sometimes it would make him completely numb, sometimes it would send him into fits. If we're being honest here, I think Willa just wasn't happy with him because he was disagreeing with her. He was fine beforehand.   Am I saying my sister drove him to it? I don't know, but there's a reason she got the hell out.
— Jay Weaver, interview with Crathlia Today
On New Year's Eve, 1271, just three months after the birth of his daughter, Daniel Whitewave Weaver took their family hoverplane and flew to Byworth, supposedly to visit his father. He entered the Crown Jewel, the brothel where his father was, and smashed the coastline into pieces. All nine major hotels and casinos collapsed, one of them cracked down the middle. Around a thousand people were killed, including Whitewave himself, crushed underneath the land that he controlled.   His reasons died with him. His psychiatrist hypothesized that he abruptly stopped taking his medication without permission (which Whitewave had apparently never done), and that it was outside of the psychiatrist's hands. The psychiatrist was still sued by several families of survivors and was sentenced to prison for three years for neglecting to commit Whitewave to a mental institution, even though Whitewave had never proved a danger to himself or others before (excluding the attempt on his own life when he was fifteen).   Whitewave's brother-in-law Jay Weaver asserts that it was partially Lord Daniel's wife, Mr. Weaver's own sister, who was at fault. Weaver believes her to be highly manipulative, having Whitewave's medication changed in an attempt to control him. Their son King Leonard has said that his meager memory of his parents is defined by arguments he didn't understand.   It is also likely that we do not have a full understanding of his childhood views on Byworth itself and on his father, and how these views changed in adulthood. Ultimately, we will never know what drove Whitewave to such violence.
