Sandpoint Sczarni (SAND-point SCHAR-nee)

Sandpoint's would-be organized crime

This group consists of an organized band of criminals led by Jubrayl Vhiski and is the closest thing in Sandpoint to a thieves’ guild, and is associated with the notorious Sczarni organized crime families of Varisia. Their members rarely engage in violent crime, and while their actions in town are more of a nuisance than a threat, rumors say that the Sczarni holds more power over Sandpoint than anyone expects.

This is a faction. Reputation will rise or fall based on favors and disservices.

Current Reputation Ignored

Structure

The Sandpoint Sczarni aren't large enough to require a formal structure. Jubrayl Vhiski is the boss, and those close to him have more power.

Culture

The Sandpoint Sczarni believes in maximizing profit while minimizing risk. They also claim to be fighting on behalf of Varisians against colonizers, and they do tend to target non-Varisians, but most Varisians despise them and despise the negative reputation they bring to their people.

Public Agenda

To thrive in the shadows of Sandpoint, and strike an (unasked for) blow for Varisians.

Assets

The Feedbag, as well as various toughs, thieves, and scoundrels.

The Sczarni are the hyenas to the Scarnetti Lion. He uses them frequently to do his dirty work, and in return they get the scraps of his wealth and favor.

The Scholars do not like doing business with the Sczarni, and they would never hire the Sczarni to do anything illegal, but if the Sczarni happen to acquire a Thassilonian artifact who better to purchase it? The Sczarni are much less offended by the prospect, and though they very rarely get their hands on anything that would interest the Scholars, they know the Scholars are a market.

The Sczarni claim they are looking out for the people, or at least the Varisians, of Sandpoint, but the people of Sandpoint are having none of that. They see the Sczarni as greedy mobsters out to line their pockets at the expense of everyone else.

Though the Sczarni at least pay lip service to Desna as a traditional Varisian deity, they see the Cathedral as an institution imposed on them by Magnimar colonizers. For their part, even those in the clerisy inclined to be sympathetic with those driven to crime by necessity dislike the organized power of the Sczarni.

Most, though not all, of the Sandpoint Mercantile Guild see the Sczarni as thieves and bandits, direct threats to their profits. A few Merchants see their underworld connections as an opportunity for more profit, but even they pretend to scorn the Sczarni in public. The Szcarni, for their part, love the merchants and want Sandpoint to prosper. A more prosperous town means richer pickings!

The only thing that keeps the Town Watch from rounding up every Sczarni is a dedication to proving wrongdoing before arresting. The Sczarni know the Town Watch are their enemies, and despise them.
