Sandpoint Scholars (SAND-point SKOL-erz)

An informal collection of those interested in ancient history

While the ruins that dot Varisia are well-known, their true nature remains largely a mystery. Due to the presence of the Old Light, Sandpoint is home to a number of scholars who seek to ferret out this history, and the truth about the Old Light and other ruins. Not only do they seek to learn about the ancient Empire of Thassilon, they also keep an eye out for modern threats tied to that ancient legacy. The Sandpoint Scholars meet on the first day of each season at Brodert Quink’s home to share rumors and news, though these gatherings are mostly glorified social visits.

This is a faction. Reputation will rise or fall based on favors or disservices.

History

Brodert Quink, frustrated that his somewhat unorthodox theories about ancient Thassilon were being ignored, decided that if the great archaeological organizations would not respect him he would do what he could independently. Ilsoari Gandethus, a former adventurer and amateur scholar himself, and Cyrdak Drokus, who adores history as a hobby, joined him. Other allies include Veznutt Parooh of The Way North, and Chask Haladan of the Curious Goblin.

The people of Sandpoint are proud of the Old Light, and so naturally they want to know more about it, so they are proud of the Sandpoint Scholars. Some of them, however, are wary of anyone studying things so ancient and, to their mind, potentially evil or blasphemous. The Scholars are all Sandpoint citizens, and see the city and its people as their own.

Though all members of the Scholars are devout people in their own way, their obsession is with an ancient culture that followed strange ways not acknowledged by the Clerisy. While this has caused no conflict, it has caused some members of the Clerisy to be wary.

The Scholars know that if any threat from the past were to rear its head, the Watch would be Sandpoint's first line of defense. As such, they tend to think well of the guard. For their part, the watch has no trouble with the Scholars, though the guards tend to focus on more pragmatic matters.

The diplomatic rapport between these two organizations would be higher, except their spheres of interest rarely overlap. Except for a scholar being asked to vouch for the provenance of a found artifact, or a scholar occasionally buying an artifact that shows up in a shop, they have little contact.

The Scholars do not like doing business with the Sczarni, and they would never hire the Sczarni to do anything illegal, but if the Sczarni happen to acquire a Thassilonian artifact who better to purchase it? The Sczarni are much less offended by the prospect, and though they very rarely get their hands on anything that would interest the Scholars, they know the Scholars are a market.

Scarnetti couldn't care less about the Scholars, and beyond ill-will toward Scarnetti in general, the feeling is mutual.
