The Kingdom of Kessex

"Clever in trade and commerce, the Kingdom of Kessex is never far when is coin involved. Their obsession with currency has led to a wealthy infrastructure, a naval force to rival the Old Imperium's, and a most grotesque display of self-indulgence by their ruling class. The high nobility have no love of anything that doesn't shine, leaving its population in poverty and despair. They feast while starvation runs rampant in their cities. Their population suffers as their publicmen grow fatter."   -Leon Drasitil, L'yonian Scholar, 1258
The Kingdom of Kessex is a grim example of how far the The Kingdoms of Eerl have fallen since the reign of King Eerl. It has always been a kingdom centered on trade, but in the last two centuries it has been in a steady state of decline. Its leadership has grown incompetent and aloof, spoiled by their decadent customs that grow more lavish and tasteless every generation. This has led to an ever growing rift between the nobility and the common folk which has caused the former to rely heavily on outside mercenaries to control their population. In most recent years, they have even begun to hire ruffians and brigands for this purpose which has led to unrest in their larger cities.   The Kingdom of Kessex is the eastern most nation of the Kingdoms of Eerl, occupying the land around Loch Magna Rocridge. When the Kingdom of Noi was torn asunder after King Izleoth's death in the winter of 520, Theresa of Eerland used her family's enormous wealth and her marriage to Izleoth's niece to lay claim to the Throne of Noi. Her guile in both trade and espionage kept her position safe from the many who opposed her while her armies crushed her opposition in the fields of war.
