Queen Delphina Le Berre Character in Gaia Verim | World Anvil

Queen Delphina Le Berre

The current ruler of the Kingdom of Kessex, she seized the throne by decisively defeating King Harlan II in the fall of 1264 to end the War of Heralds. Over the next several years, she ruled justly and undid much of the damage caused by the former rulership, including the famine that had been plaguing the Kingdom for nearly five years. Following the sudden, and suspicious death of her husband, King Alann de Farron, in the summer of 1268, her mental stability quickly took a sudden turn south, resulting in her becoming increasingly tyrannical over the following years.   On the 10th of Janos in 1269, she moved on questionable information she received months prior which stated that several of her vassals were responsible for the death of her husband, sending forces to arrest those suspected. The accused when peaceful as they were expecting to be given the chance to prove their innocence in court. However, they were all brutal executed with trial, an action that led to a series of failed rebellions, which in turn led to more executions. Any royal house suspected in any sort of coercion with rebellious forces had their lands and titles stripped from them after being thrown into the dungeon if they were not executed immediately.   After the Burning of Lundenwic in the winter of 1270 was blamed on magic users, Delphina and her allies in the Church used it as a chance to outlaw magic to any who are not members of the State or Church, giving them power over the use of magic at the cost of the support of many magic sects in the area. In 1271, she crushed a desperate rebellion, leading to unquestioned rule in her Kingdom. To keep order, she established the Knights of Umber two months later. Led by Gregar Umber, a ruthless and brutal knight who earned recognition during the rebellion prior in which he demonstrated his scorched earth tactics on the rebellious forces.   Delphina was not aware of the attacks against Meadowbrook ordered by the Archbishop Gimmi through Bishop Olin Denome and refused to support any continued aggression against the refugee town until the war with Wessenhelm was seen to a finish and the rebellion was crushed. Unfortunately, Wessenhelm's forces got the better of the Kessian invasion force, inflicting heavy casualties. The Kessian Loyalists also lost many troops to the rebellion when they lost Lundenwic to rebel forces.
