Knights of Umber

Though she had just defeated rebellious forces a couple months ago, Queen Delphina aimed to further quell any unrest that may still exist by creating the Knights of Umber on the 23rd of Decedus in 1271. Led by Ser Gregar Umber, who is largely known and feared for his brutal tactics, the Knights of Umber were a secret police in the guise of a knightly order who policed the Kingdom of Kessex for any sign of insurrection . Though the Order will help defend the people of Kessex against external threats such as out of control wildlife or banditry, they would also conduct sweeps of entire hamlets, taking any who were accused of treason. Those taken were rarely seen again.   In the late fall of 1279, Justine Drake, a prominent member of the Knights of Umber, was tasked to take the defiant township of Meadowbrook by force. He was given command of 1050 troops, including 25 mounted knights and nearly 400 veteran infantry, but was defeated when Meadowbrook's inhabitants used propaganda and mounted night strikes to break the attacking army's morale. In the ensuing chaos, the army turned on the knights when they tried to force the army back onto the field of combat. When the dust settled, Justine and many of the knights lie dead, surrounded by dozens of others. The defeat crippled the Knight's reputation, leading to multiple riots across Kessex, one of which led to rebellious forces seizing Lundenwic over the course of the next two years.
