Kroxia was lying on the floor of the Atom Fantasy Room of the Circle City Cathouse. The Children of Atom Inquisitor looked up at Linda in awe. She had bested him and his companions, and called upon the religious fervour known as the Atomic Storm. Truly, she was blessed of Atom - and he was not.
Deep within the virtual world of Morag’s Synth component, Morag’s consciousness found herself in a digitally generated basement in Boston. A single light illuminated a red painting dotted with yellow eyes. Kay stared at the painting thoughtfully. The Boston Synth asked Morag what she thought of the painting.
Morag noted the colours were shifting, and Kay explained that she couldn't quite remember the exact shade. The painting was one of Richard's. All of his art was disturbing. He lived in a world which had blown itself up, so he expressed himself with disturbing imagery. Richard had grown up in a place called Diamond City, which had high walls for protection. But he and his sister were forced by need to salvage outside those walls. Richard escaped raiders day after day. But on one mission, his sister was captured. She was murdered, but not before being misused.
Kay asked Morag if she really believed Beau, that they were on a heroic mission to make the world a better place. Morag said that she didn't know if it would work, but that was the plan. Kay promised that she would cooperate so long as Morag was on the side of good.
Then Kay wrapped up Y-00's processor with thoughts of Richard's paintings. This freed Morag to take over the body once more. Morag found herself in the Atom Fantasy room of the Circle City Cathouse.
Kroxia confessed to Linda as Scipio tended to his wounds. He described that Killsplatter was in a house in the ruins of Indianapolis, not far outside The Rails. She had plenty of mercenaries and Inquisitors protecting her. The Capitol, the Inquisitors and Killsplatter had been plotting Railmaster Bloodgrind's overthrow for a week. Killsplatter had set up her safehouse a week ago, making sure there were deliveries and messengers already setup to be her base of operations.
Linda told Kroxia that it was his duty to try to convert the other Inquisitors, those helping Killsplatter, to the truth of Lindavism. Kroxia agreed, but didn't think he was likely to succeed.
Linda, Scipio and Morag returned to the airship, careful to keep the Rails Guards from seeing Kroxia with them. Anyone could be working for Killsplatter.
Once they were aboard Ms. Man, Lex called for a meeting, private from the Midwest Brotherhood crew of the ship. She announced to the team that she had received a message from The Puppetmaster. Or rather, Hemsut had sent out a vision to all of her Mad Ones across the wasteland, and the signal carried so strongly that it had come into her mind. So, everything Lex had heard from The Puppetmaster had also been heard by all of the Psykers coast to coast. Hemsut warned of the power of the Thirteen Scepters, claiming that a key is usually made for a lock, but sometimes a lock is made around a key. The Puppetmaster admitted that she was responsible for the St. Louis Attack, destroying the entire city just to eliminate the Scepter of the Plains. She had employed her agent Tameka to set up a bomb in the city and leave it to receive a signal for detonation. Her controller Booch waited for news of someone retrieving the scepter. Rumors circled in Emancipation of Lex's aunt Alexa stealing the Scepter of the Plains, and he knew that the object was in play. Booch sent his mind-controlled Synth Mouse to travel with Lex and scepter, and Mouse finally detonated the bomb in St. Louis. [And Booch must've set up the Anheiser-Booch Brewery VIP experience to protect the party from the blast that he knew would come.]
But in Lex's vision, The Puppetmaster lamented that even her drastic action had not been enough. Great Leader was gathering the scepters, and finding a way to get around the lost scepter. In Hemsut's visions of potential futures, timelines where Wyatt overcame the problem of the missing scepter end. There is no future, nothing to see. The Puppetmaster claimed that her abilities were diminishing, and she could be of less assistance. The only clue she could give was a vision of the location of the receptacle for the scepters. "There is something man-made. Abandoned. It waits within steep mountains, a glassy lake below. The area is lined with tall Douglas Fir trees.”
The team weren't entirely shocked. They had all seen evidence of The Puppetmaster and Wyatt scheming against each other. Certainly, Great Leader had to be stopped, but they weren't in a position to do anything directly. Their mission to Holy Toledo would already be a great frustration to The Capitol's plans, and so it was still a good start. They wondered if this "lock" for the scepters might be the Whitespring Resort that Annalynn Whittman had warned them about. The Responders organization had tried to keep Great Leader out of the Whitespring for decades, and word was that she had finally breeched its defenses. But the area Hemsut described, with tall Douglas Firs seemed more like Montana or the Pacific Northwest. They would keep their eyes open, but the mission continued.
Lex and Morag scouted the safehouse which Kroxia had described. Sure enough, they spotted Killsplatter there as well as six mercenaries and four Inquisitors. The Party would be free to plan a coordinated attack, but their adversaries were on guard and would not be surprised. Linda employed Kroxia to try to convince the other Inquisitors to stand down while Lex & Patch targeted Killsplatter and Morag approached from the opposite way.
The plan went well. Kroxia, with Linda and Scipio's help, was able to convince the Inquisitors that Killsplatter, The Capitol and Right Inquisitor Tomas's intentions were bad and that their cause was unjust. The mercenaries were far less receptive and a fought broke out. Morag, employing a Stealth Boy and a dose of Calmex, was able to quickly dispatch one of the guards. Lex went full-bore on Killsplatter, shooting the schemer twice in the head with her elephant gun. Before she even realized what was going on, Killsplatter was ended by Patch, who expertly tossed a Nuka Grenade through the window which Lex had shot out.
The mercenaries kept fighting, but their defence collapsed quickly. Scipio's dimachaerus technique of firing a Sonic Emitter with one hand and a Plasma Gun with the other left enemies stunned and then burned to death. Linda called upon her Atomic Storm once more, turning her super sledge into the judging hand of Atom. Andy charged into the house and deployed his unrestricted Pneumatic Fist, hammering a merc so hard the man's shoulder tore free from the rest of his body.
There was only one dangerous attack from the opponents, when a rooftop lookout took an aimed shot at Scipio from across the street. The former Legionary's head was Injured, leaving him blind and stunned, but Dr. Patch soon treated him. Before long, Morag and Lex eliminated the last two and it was all over.
The Inquisitors looked upon the scene with amazement. They were awestruck that Linda, who they thought of as non-human, had called upon the Atomic Storm. This was a holy state of religious ecstasy reserved as Atom's gift to the Inquisitors. Kroxia spoke more about Linda's goodness, and the Inquisitors admitted that they had been shocked when they heard that Right Inquisitor Tomas had burned children at Copperhead. They pledged themselves to the teachings of Lindavism and asked how they could help.
Meanwhile, Morag, Lex and Andy searched the house. Lex found that Killsplatter's armoured dress had survived the explosion, as had her family ring. In another room, Andy and Morag found a gun case, big enough to transport Beau. Morag asked for privacy with the case, which the others gave her. She carefully approached the case and spoke to it in a soothing tone. The case had locks, and she asked for help opening them. Which was easy because both locks had been broken open. To Morag's dismay, there was nothing inside the case but Beau's gun strap, broken at the clips. They left the house having eliminated Killsplatter, but in defeat that they had not retrieved Beau.
They asked the Inquisitors about people coming in and out of the house, and the zealots admitted that two teams and come back and forth this morning. There were a pair of ghoul mercenaries who seemed to be checking the security situation for Killsplatter in The Rails. And then there had been a second team, two human couriers, who had brough two big duffle bags out of the house and headed for Pitt International Finance. Morag's heart sank at the thought of Beau being sold off to P.I.F. and carted off to some distant corner of The Rustlands.
Scipio mused that Railmaster Bloodgrind would be pleased that they had eliminated Killsplatter, the woman who had tried to assassinate him. He suggested they go to see him as soon as possible, to try to get their 5400 Rusty fine reduced. The others agreed and they headed out. As they went, Lex, Patch and Andy decided to rest at the airship. And when they came aboard, they found the crew still playing poker. But to their shock, Beau the RifleBuddy was also at the dining table, playing cards with the motorized limbs of his bipod. Lex immediately called up Morag on the radio of their modular helmets and told her Beau had been found. Morag and the Party rushed back to the airship to see. Beau explained that he had used his gyroscopic motors to break out of the gun case they had kept him. And then he had rolled through the house and out a window. Then it was just a matter of ambling down old roads back to the airship. The process had taken him less than an hour.
Morag was relieved and the rest of the Party were still high on their successful assault. Their luck was finally changing in The Rails. Now they just needed to go to the Railmaster and demand what they deserved...
