Background

Pre-apocalypse, Patch was a surgeon at PIH Health Downey Hospital in South East Los Angeles. He had a different name then. When the bomb hit downtown LA, he was in the hospital's basement restocking supplies for his operating theatre. The building was on the edge of the moderate blast damage radius and collapsed around him. When he awoke, he dragged himself out of the rubble, grabbed his surgeon's tools and as many supplies as he could find and ventured out to help survivors. Patch wandered the wastes of California, selflessly soaking in the radiation of the worst hit areas to lend medical aid where it was needed. In short time, the radiation of the initial blast in addition to the prolonged exposure ghoulified him and he began feeling comfortable, even rejuvenated, in highly radiated places.
In 2083, he heard about a new ghoul settlement called The Necropolis where Bakersfield had been. He ended up there shortly after Set took over in 2084 and decided to settle into a sedentary practice, acting more as a family doctor than a surgeon for the ghoulified population. Here he came to realize that happiness and hope played a big factor in the general well-being of his patients, so he would don clown make-up and try to make them laugh as he performed his check-ups, first with the younger ghouls, and eventually with all ghouls. He was gifted a old trick flower by one of his younger patients and filled it with irradiated water for a quick laugh-and-heal device, or laugh-and sicken for non-ghouls. He took on the name Patch Radam, (cuzza that movie and stuff,) leaving his prewar identity behind forever.
In 2157, Patch found himself in the midst of the initial assault by the dogmatic super-mutant group Unity, and found he enjoyed the use of explosives over other weapons. He would much rather keep his distance and take out multiple targets at once than get anywhere near the hulking super-mutants with his slender, bookish frame. In a pinch, his steady hands and clinical precision made learning to throw his scalpels and other surgeon's tools a viable back-up when his battle position was compromised. He survived the attack and assisted in the survivors' recovery.
He subsequently aided in defense during the super-mutant retaliation that destroyed the city and joined the great migration north to Broken Hills, a uranium mining colony, in 2185. There he developed his own uranium-based explosive devices that were harmful to others via radiation damage, but could actually heal ghouls.
A few years later he ventured off east in search of new horizons, being careful to avoid hostile human settlements which were known to shoot ghouls on-sight. To be safe, he started wearing his clown makeup everywhere to hide the condition of his skin, and reinforced his lab coat with ballistic weave. A ghoul clown doctor wandering the hostile Midwest.
In his travels he came upon Gravestone, a cultish ghoul community in the middle of pre-war Kansas City, Missouri who worshipped an undetonated nuclear bomb the had been named "Plutonius". Not being one for dogmatic cults or religion in general, he didn't stay long, and he was able to leave unhindered by the cultists. For the next couple years he would occasionally return to trade his medical expertise for supplies and bask in the friendly, radiated atmosphere of the settlement.
In 2197, The Midwest Brotherhood of Steel was forced to ask for help from other races in response to a flood of violent robots. Patch joined the effort as a field medic, using pulse grenades and mines to keep his areas of the field clear of any synthetic enemies. During the conflict, his grateful human CO gifted him a set of Chinese Army Phased Throwing Knives to keep him safe in the field, knowing that keeping a field medic of Patch's skill alive would pay back dividends in saved lives. After the conflict, the Midwest became a much more tolerant place and was relatively peaceful under the rule of the Brotherhood.
He continued wandering east, drawn to places affected by radiation for the warmth and healing, administering medical aid and warding off threats to the local ghoul communities with his explosives and radiation weapon technology. It was in one of these territories that he ran into a shrine of the Children of Atom in the late 2270s. He observed the small newly-settled faction of The Children of Atom from a distance, as there were certain undeniable similarities to Gravestone. He was interested in this group of humans who were immune to, and even worshipped radiation, but he was wary of dogmatic zealots after his encounters with Unity.
Eventually he was spotted and captured by Inquisitors, stripped of his belongings, and brought before the local leader, Mother Isabella. She was a strict leader who knew how to keep order, but was too intelligent to be a complete zealot. She immediately took a liking to Patch, seeing his foolish wit for what it was, a veil worn to allay suspicion and put others at ease, masking his true wisdom and intelligence. She also took an interest in his unique radiation explosives, referring to them as "like the fingers of Atom".
Patch played up the desire to convert for a chance to escape, but Mother Isabella saw through it. Recognizing that he too was immune to radiation, she considered letting him go anyway until she discovered that underneath the bright clown make-up he was, in fact, a ghoul. Unlike the rest of the Midwest, the Children of Atom hadn't been involved in the robot wars and hadn't evolved socially with the Brotherhood as they were newcomers to the area. So her fascination with him turned into freakshow bigotry and she decided to keep him chained up in her public quarters as a sort of jester. It was only through the help of an acolyte in the sect who had grown to admire the clown that Patch eventually escaped. One night while Mother Isabella was asleep he had the acolyte fetch one of his phased throwing knives from the pulpit, where she kept them, and cut his way out of bondage. He was able to grab almost all of his things but could only find a few remaining radiation grenades, as she had distributed them to her Inquisitors and sent a few away to Megaton for further study by the church. Before stealing away in the night, he thanked the the acolyte tearfully, gifted her with a single scalpel, and pointed her back toward The Mother's sleeping chambers. He then fled west and never returned.
Over the next few decades, he spent most of his time either clover-leafing the areas around Gravestone or helping in the Brotherhood's various conflicts when called upon to do so. He watched warily as the Gravestone Cathedral of Atom was established, not wanting to reveal his past with the church, but doing what he could to lend extra medical aid the original ghoul inhabitants in the ensuing tensions. From the outside, he was regarded as a neutral party, and would happily serve anyone in the area who needed medical attention.

The Game

  Story Arc 9 (Kentucky Dam)
The Current Adventuring Party came across Patch at the old Wurth Industries robotics factory. Patch had been searching around the Kentucky Dam area, spending his down-time as a doctor at the dam doing a favour for his friends, Steve Gritch. Professor Gritch had told Dr. Patch to look for a super mutant named Linda. Patch had poked his head into Wurth Industries, and been trapped within by evil robots. Coincidentally, a SchlockettBot named Andy was also trapped in the factory. But, a day later, Linda and her friends cleared the factory of evil robots and freed them.
Dr. Patch and Andy joined the party, who were headed to Homeland, within the Midwest. They wished to send an important telegram which they could not explain. Patch traveled with the strange group, offering medical assistance whenever needed. Crossing the only bridge over the Ohio River, they made it to Homeland and Dr. Patch exerted his authority to send the telegraph. Seeing the Midwest's lackluster support for refugee slaves from Caesar's Legion, Radam insisted on setting up a brief medical station for those in need.
    Story Arc 10 (Betrayal)
Patch reconnected with the group as the continued down the road to Kentucky Dam. Along the way, Patch was bemused by many of the group's actions.
