(Adventure Day 124)
It was late in the afternoon and the group were at the Mayfield College with Dr. Isaiah. After she had taught Arminius to fit energy weapons with momentum capacitors, they showed the scientist a piece of armor which had been knocked off of the Synth which captured Lex. Dr. Isaiah examined it closely and she determined that it was from a suit of X-01 power armor. This kind of power armor was created by The Enclave, decades after the Great War. This equipment was very powerful and rare. The fragment still bore an Enclave serial number, but only a person with deep knowledge of the Enclave would be able to look up the number. On top of that, the piece had been extensively modified, the technology required to do that would be far beyond what was available in Dixie.
Linda remembered the fortune she was given by Ananke, that nearby Wurth Industries would have a clue to Lex's location. Eager to be reunited with her friend, Linda demanded they travel to the old robotics factory. Morag led them through the dense forest and rolling hills of the region, successfully guiding them to Wurth Industries in the blazing summer heat. At the factory, the group discovered a young woman in strange garb. This woman was friendly and identified herself as Firewire of The Reavers religion in Kansas. Firewire had heard that Wurth Industries contained a difference engine, a mechanical, analog computer. This device was anathema to the Reavers religion, and she had journeyed hundreds of miles to destroy it. She relayed that if the group could destroy the machine, The Reavers would be forever grateful.
The group agreed. Firewire warned that the factory contained many dangerous robots. It would be a difficult battle, if it came to that. Arminius asked if Firewire could help at all. Unequipped with sufficient armour, Firewire couldn't join the fight, but would set off explosives outside as a distraction. The group could signal her from inside. At that point, Beau the RifleBuddy spoke up and Firewire's eyes widened. She was excited that Beau was obviously an artificial person which The Reavers called "Scions of Bob." These intelligent weapons had begun appearing in the western region of the wasteland (mostly Colorado and Kansas.) About a dozen had emerged, which The Reavers considered holy, not only because their circuits were clearly blessed by Saint Di Ode, but because each Scion of Bob had a unique personality and a strong moral code. These weapons found worthy warriors and bonded with them, trying to be a good influence. Beau was confused, he knew nothing about this. Firewire said that MegaByte in Gravestone, leader of The Reavers, might know more.
The group carefully scouted the building and entered a quiet corner. The building hummed with strange vibrations. They listened closely at a door, readying an aggressive attack. They signaled Firewire to distract the robots within. Then Arminius laid a well-placed mine, threw open the door and tossed in a plasma grenade. The robots within, modified long ago by vicious raiders, sprang to attack. The largest of them, an imposing ReaperBot, was quickly dispatched by Morag and Beau. She swept out from cover with bizarre speed, putting three impossibly fast sniper shots into the ReaperBot's head. Linda bashed with her rocket-powered super sledge. And Arminius got to try out his new momentum capacitor Institute Laser, which worked just as promised. Morag, seeing the Institute Laser fired in combat, felt sick to her stomach - an instinctual disgust. It took some time, but the team dispatched all of the robots in the room. Arminius was careful and tactical, scanning the room carefully for hidden enemies.
The team repeated the process in the next room, Firewire's explosion outside continuing to distract the killer robots. They were smashing the robots efficiently, until Linda lost hold of her super sledge. For the second time, a rocket-powered hammer confused her with its strange swing, leaving her hands and flying across the room. Disarmed, Linda was attacked by a vicious ScourgeBot, which hit Linda with a powerful pneumatic fist. But the robots were soon defeated. Arminius healed Linda as she ate a delicious Ribeye steak. Beau was upset by his last shot in the combat. He had meant to take a well-placed shot, but it had ricocheted off of the robot's heavy armour. Dismayed and bored, he began to sulk. Morag talked to him patiently, reassuring him that defeating these robots was an important mission, related to his great quest as a Scion of Bob.
The third room was the easiest. One JunkBot and one ReaperBot could not contend with three warriors using their weapons cleverly. Confident and aggressive, they went to a fourth door. The hum coming from the north side of the factory was now very intense, and Firewire's distraction had worn off. Morag put her ear to the fourth door, looking to scout out the room before they attacked. But the group were surprised, the door was slammed open, knocking down Arminius and revealing an especially modified Sentry Bot called Killface.
Arminius acted first. Still lying on his back, he raised his newly modified Institute Laser and pulled the trigger. Something went wrong mechanically. The weapon failed, erupting with sparks and smoke. Killface opened fire with his minigun, showering the group with 5mm bullets. All three were hurt and injured, but they continued to fight. A JunkBot and ScourgeBot came rushing through the door, complicating the fight. The battle was dire, Linda was almost felled. But some clever maneuvers and tactical healing led to the group's victory.
The factory was cleared of killer robots and the group opened the door to the difference engine. And they did find the enormous, mechanical analog computer. But standing in front of it, there were also a Schlockett Bot, and a clown... doctor?
