General Summary

Previous Session: SESSION 43: ENDURING DIVISION
Next Session: SESSION 45: FOR WHAT IT'S WURTH
Players: Current Adventuring Party, Arminius, Linda, Morag
  *August 25, 2317*
  (Adventure Day 123)
The party had been victorious in the Mud Island obstacle course. With a day left before the train left northward, the group headed to the town market and the public workbenches. Morag attempted to upgrade Linda's armour. It didn't work. Like, a lot. But they got a Long Barrel on Linda's Flamer, so they got that goin' for them.
Having reviewed the bizarre and complex situation of the Enclave tainting chems in Dixie, the group headed back to the Memphis Reformatory. Arminius was able to separate a small dose of UltraJet to test on their comatose patients. And it was confirmed - the four prisoners had developed UltraJet addiction, all without knowing they had taken the chem. They would need to be regularly dosed for the rest of their lives.
The party returned to the Boarding House, looking to rent rooms again. Hugo approached them, grateful for their work in getting his partner Sparta the assaultron deputized. He rewarded them with some .50 calibre ammo. Arminius remembered Beau mentioning that he'd rather shoot .50, and that .308 "tasted" foul to him. Beau explained that he was modified from his .50 frame to a .308 receiver. But Beau had no idea where he came from or who named them.
That night, Linda contemplated her religious situation. In that state, she lit her Agwé candle from Voodoo Authentica. Nothing explosive happened, but the room smelled of the sea, and the candle never burned down.
The party ate breakfast in the market and got on the morning train. After the greeting from Conductor McNeil, they noticed NCR troops coming aboard. These weren't grunt peacekeepers, they were elite commandos, masquerading as common soldiery.
Moving through the train, they met Bellmont a MerchantBot from Detroit. He lamented that he had lost his "bios" during his latest caravan, (meaning his human mercenary guards had died or left him.) Bellmont noted that the Auto Workers Union always needed caravan guards, but bios like them weren't allowed in the city.
The first stop was Newbern, an old ruin of a town. A community leader named Fitz was meeting with a few locals. There had been a Legion "raid" in the night. A handful of young Legion cadets snuck into Newbern, stole their Dixie flag and fled. One of the teens had stumbled while fleeing and had been captured by the locals. Dixie protocol was to execute the Legionary, teen or not. Fitz didn't want to kill the kid, and was thinking of sending the prisoner to Memphis - where he would probably be executed anyway. Arminius convinced Fitz to let him talk to the prisoner.
Balbinus was a Legion initiate. 17 years old and still not a formal member of the Legion. He was ready to die for Caesar, and offering to Great God Mars. Balbinus mentioned that he admired great military leaders like Gaius Fringus. Arminius asked about Fringus and the boy told the sad story of how Fringus was betrayed by Scipio Americanus, his beloved protégé. Fringus's second captain, the great and noble Obscisus Ursus, was left in mourning for his fallen hero. It was said, even in song, that wily Americanus was still out there, performing unholy mischief. Arminius set the boy straight, telling him how Americanus was the one betrayed. It was Ursus who killed Fringus and poisoned Americanus to get him out of the way. It was Fringus's last act of mercy that Americanus was smuggled out of the Legion. Ursus had even hired Sicarii to assassinate Americanus, using the unclean slave fighters against a citizen of the Legion - a terrible sin in the eyes of Great God Mars. Balbinus swore that he would tell the story of Americanus if he could get back to Caesar's Lands.
Arminius was able to convince the people of Newbern to release the kid. They watched Balbinus leave, headed back to the Legion.
The team returned to the train and three hours later, they were at the end of the line. It had once been the town Fulton, Kentucky. But now it was just a ruin invaded by mutated oaks. A boy named Davey was advertising fortune-telling done by a wise woman. The party were suspicious, refusing to pay the boy outright. But Linda wanted to hear about the future, so they went to the fortune-teller's tent. They met a 90 year old human woman named Ananke. The party gave her 10 Dixie Dollars for a telling and Linda asked where Lex was. Ananke did some cold reading and told Linda that some spiritual, metaphorical clues to Lex's whereabouts could be found in a local ruin called Wurth Industries. Arminius was offended by the grift. When Ananke realized Morag's identity, she relayed a dream she had, a vision apparently brought from Ananke's son from beyond the grave.
Ananke foretold, "The gods forbid it, they push mens' actions, strain to pacify. But the men insist. Betrayal and greed. War never changes." And gifted Morag a special magazine.
Morag, being a local knew that Mayfield College specialized in energy weapons. Linda was excited to search for Lex, but Arminius was very interested in energy technology. Morag guided them through the dense woods of West Kentucky to the facility. There, the government of Dixie had gathered researchers to generate energy weapon. Dixie was poor in rare minerals and military stockpiles. Desperate for defensive weapons, Dixie was doing everything the could to make use of that technology. The group met Dr. Isaiah who taught Arminius how to affix energy weapons with her new Momentum Capacitor, and helped him to modify his Institute Laser.
