(Adventure Day 122)
They were in Jax, sleeping in the old Governor’s mansion, now a free hotel maintained by the Dixie government. And a nightmare came to Lex again. It started with a familiar scene. She was in the Vault 40 gymnasium, young. Her father, Dolion Garridan had brought her to one of the exercise bikes, in need of repair. Twenty years ago, he had handed her a tool and she had officially fixed something for the fist time. In the dream, Dolion handed her the tool and then he began to melt. His flesh falling off of his bones, dripping off like wax. She awoke, feeling weak, feeling herself dying of Genetic Disarray Syndrome. Her father had been lost these seven-teen years. He had left on just another salvage mission but had never returned. The people in Vault 40 barely spoke about it.
The party went to visit the Galloway’s Children Center. It was a publicly funded education and daycare centre. Linda wanted to visit the children, but they were busy taking classes. But they heard there was a puppet show every day at four, put on by Chef Mullins, the owner of a local restaurant.
That seemed like a logical place to visit next, so they went to Blue Crab Bonanza, Chef Mullins’ restaurant. With their reputation with barbeque chefs, they entered the eatery hesitantly. The blue crabs weren’t just a name, the place specialized in sea-food. They had big cauldrons of steaming water, visible from the dining area. Arminius looked closely and saw that it was a poor setup. The staff were boiling the crabs to death, there was something wrong here. Chef Mullins approached them with a warm greeting. He was a scrawny, greasy character with busy eyes. When Arminius asked him about his recipes, Mullins was evasive, guarded. They asked him about his puppet show and he spoke strangely about interacting with children. Lex and Arminius were concerned. They agreed to help him with to-day’s show, but that was still hours away.
Sheriff Reznick had warned them against going to Storytime Village, the Jackson Volcano or the Live-stock Arena. Against his wishes, they delved into Storytime Village. It had been a children’s amusement park before the war, filled with animatronic entertainers. Now it was decayed, left to total dis-repair. Except, in the centre of the park, there was a huge, artificial tree. They approached and it spoke, another one of the animatronic attractions. This was Rhuka, a fully sentient robot, still in his fictional persona. The party asked him what was going on, and Rhuka told them that the entertainer robots of this park had gone insane. The Great War had burned all of the local children to ash, leaving Queen Hugsalot and the other robots without purpose. They had gone entirely insane, become violent and desperate.
It was an insane situation, and they decided to go to the local market for supplies. The party stocked up on healing supplies and ammunition. While they were shopping, they spotted on of the Storytime Village gang. A three-foot teddy bear was trying to buy something, but the vendors wouldn’t sell to it. The party approached him, and he introduced himself as Rupert. He was in the marketplace looking to buy massage oil and expensive soaps to pleasure Queen Hugsalot with. They agreed to buy the items for him, in exchange for information. Rupert agreed and admitted being afraid. Hugsalot and her gang of cute animals had acquired a thermonuclear device and had left to place it deep in the Jackson Volcano. If they detonated it, the resulting eruption would be devastating to the whole region. The queen was demanding that the government of Dixie supply her and her gang with new, more humanoid bodies.
The party weren’t going to stand for that. They stealthily moved to the Jackson Volcano, delving into its inner area. There were evil animatronic animals armed with laser rifles. Linda called upon the power of Atom, entering her Atomic Storm religious fervour. She charged into the enemies with her new Super Sledge. Lex held back, sniping as usual. Arminius made expert use of his Incendiary Laser Gun, starting the stuffed bears on fire with every shot. They were doing significant damage to their enemies when the momentum changed. Linda lost hold of her rocket-powered sledgehammer and it went rocketing away, straight into a glowing hot magma flow. A second group of Storytime Village goons flanked Lex from behind. She had to switch to her shotgun, far less effective than her trusty hunting rifle. Arminius was caught in the middle.
Worse yet, there really was a nuclear weapon deep in the volcano. One of the fuzzy critters moved to the bomb and activated it. In less than two minutes, it would detonate. Linda was gunned down, and collapsed to the stony floor, hovering on the edge of death. Lex was injured but continued to outmaneuver the attackers. Arminius had to choose between saving Linda and disarming the bomb. Lex shouted at him to go after the bomb, so he cracked open the weapon, revealing its glowing core. He knew he could reach in and pull it out, at great harm to himself, or take the time to carefully disarm it. Lex killed off the last of the Storytime goons and treated Linda with a stimpak. This gave Arminius a little more time, so he went through a full disarmament.
It had been a close thing, but they were victorious. They had been hurt, but they had plenty of healing supplies and ammunition. Linda withdrew the nuclear weapon’s core and kept it, a sacred relic of Atom. The party decided to press the attack. They reconnoitered the Livestock Arena, and saw less than fifteen of the animatronic goons.
Linda and Arminius walked right into the Storytime Village gang’s headquarters, with Lex holding back. Queen Hugsalot was vicious and insulting. She thought she still had her atom bomb as leverage, so the queen overplayed her hand. When the party were unphased by her threats, she attacked. Linda made short work of Hugsalot herself, but the whole Storytime Village gang charged at them. Lex aimed for their robotic heads, shattering their processor parts as fast as she could shoot.
Arminius and Linda were surrounded. They shifted to avoid the gruesome critters, circling each other in a violent dance. The sock monkey known as Monkee leaped onto Arminius and gave him a vicious bite, leaving him unconscious and bleeding. But Lex was able to rescue him with Stimpak. And Linda, even without her Super Sledge was formidable. She smashed the last few robots with her base-ball bat.
They were in another street in another city in Dixie, again surrounded by the remains of their fresh kills. Sheriff Reznick and his deputies had heard the gun-shots and came running onto the scene. This was becoming a habit…
