    *August 23, 2317*
(Adventure Day 121)
The party were riding the train through Dixie, trying to get northward, ultimately headed to Kentucky Dam. There, Professor Gritch and his team from the Midwest Brotherhood of Steel might be able to help them. Lex felt sick and worried about Genetic Disarray Syndrome. Perhaps Professor Gritch, who did not have the Vault 40 synthetic DNA, but worked there for a decade, could save her. The reached the city of Jax, where the train was stopping overnight.
When they disembarked, the sheriff of Jax was waiting on the platform. Sheriff Reznick addressed the small crowd. He explained that they were welcome in Jax, but there was a small situation that was under control. People were free to move about the city, so long as they stayed away from the Livestock Arena, the Jackson Volcano and Storytime Village. The passengers went on their way and the party approached the sheriff. Reznick didn't want to talk, but Arminius convinced him to explain further. He said that there was a dangerous local group who was controlling those areas. He had notified Atlanta, and they would surely send GSC Special Forces, Dixie's elite soldiers. He assured the party that it was all under control and they should leave it alone.
The group were intrigued but wanted to get a lay of the land first. They went to the Parkside Alehouse to get a drink and hear the local rumours. The owner and tender, a woman named Sunila, told them that Storytime Village had been off-limits for as long as she could remember. There was some kind of pre-war danger there. But she didn't know what was going on. She remarked that the American Memory Project was an interesting museum of Dixie history, both pre-war and post. She also warned that the food at the Blue Crab Bonanza was awful.
They decided to check out the American Memory Project and found a well-kept museum. Dixie's history was somewhat sad. In the days before the Great War, citizens of the Deep South were being drafted into service in the Sino-American War at twice the rate as other regions of the country. Southern labour had been decimated by cheap robot workers. And since the bombs dropped, Dixie had been the punching bag of the wasteland. The Capitol had invaded twice, and Caesar's Legion had taken a turn. There were many displays showing evidence of their courage in the defence of the homeland, mostly noble sacrifices. Walking through the exhibits was a group of foreigners. This posse, lead by a man named Galant, had come to Jax looking for a fugitive. There was a man named Brook, a dangerous criminal from The Capitol, and they needed to bring him to justice. The party politely remarked that they hadn't seen him, but would let them know if they did.
When the party left the American Memory Project, they were flagged down by someone in an alley. This was Brook, who had been watching the movements of Gallant and his crew. To Lex and Linda's surprise, Brook looked just like their old friend Mouse, but older, with different scars. Brook asked them if they worked for The Puppetmaster, and they assured them that they didn't. They asked him about Mouse, and he asked them if this Mouse's birth name was Fynn. It was. Brook explained that there were many Fynns. Their Fynn, this Mouse, had been sent by The Puppetmaster to operate wherever they came from. But he had been sent to The Capitol, sent to spy without even his knowledge, using him when he fell into hypnotic fugue states. But he had had enough. He had escaped The Capitol and was heading to Michigan to find someone called The General. He didn't know who this General was, or what he was a general of, but he had heard there were answers with The General in Harrison Lake, Michigan. He asked if their Fynn, this Mouse, knew anything about The General, or The Puppetmaster, or Harrison Lake. He was disappointed to find that they had no idea.
Just then Galant and his posse entered the alleyway. They bid the party step aside and let them take Brook. Brook warned them that he didn't want to hurt them. Galant drew his gun and took a shot at Brook. The party jumped to action and helped Brook eliminate the hunters. When it was over, the Capitol team were dead. Brook thanked them and left, headed to Harrison Lake.
They next went to the old Jackson State House where the region was administrated by Executive Ellanor Maestri. The rich and powerful woman invited them to her office, offering them a job. She explained that her family had roots in Jax that went back centuries. In fact, her ancestor, one Shawn Govinder, had built a house in the city with his own two hands. The house had been incinerated by the atomic bombs of the Great War, but a brass door handle had endured. The door handle, a symbol of belonging in Jax, was now in the hands of Sunila, a local bar owner. Sunila was not even a Govinder descendant, having inherited the door handle by marriage. Worse yet, she was a crude and lowly woman, with neither class nor refinement. Executive Maestri offered them 30 Dixie Dollars if they would go and retrieve the handle. The party weren't impressed with Ellanor, she seemed arrogant and haughty. But they said they'd consider it.
The party went back to the Parkside Alehouse and decided to just tell Sunila what Executive Maestri had asked them. Sunila wasn't surprised, Ellanor was a vicious woman. But she wasn't giving up the door handle. It had been her wife's prized possession, and since she had died, it was a cherished keepsake. Sunila made a counter offer, saying she would give them 100 Dixie Dollars if they could get Ellanor Maestri arrested. Surely, if they asked, they could get her to admit to all sorts of illegal activity and then Sheriff Reznick would have to act. This seemed like a lot, so the party only said that they would consider it.
They decided to check in with the sheriff. Reznick said that Sunila's plan sounded like entrapment. You couldn't invite someone to a crime, and then complain that they were doing criminal stuff. The sheriff thought that Executive Maestri was by no means a nice person, but he was hesitant to arrest the administrative leader of the whole region. If they were extremely careful, he supposed they could go talk to Maestri, and if she just offered up criminal activity of her own accord, then he would have to act.
It was a bold move, but they returned to Executive Maestri. Lex put a holotape into her Pip-Boy computer and began recording audio. They complained to Ellanor that Sunila was such a rude, low-class and ignorant woman that they couldn't make headway with her. They knew exactly where the door handle was, but they couldn't get it. Arminius mentioned on top of that, Sunila had many insulting words for Maestri, and proceeded to list them, only telling the truth of what they had heard from Sunila's own lips. Ellanor Maestri was furious. She implied that she would triple their fee if Sunila came by some kind of violent accident. They played dumb, asking her to clarify. And she did, blatantly asking them if they would consider a murder for hire situation. The party again said they would consider it and left.
Now the group was concerned that Sheriff Reznick might not follow through on his duty. They were strangers here and had no idea how entangled or corrupt the sheriff and executive were. Approaching Reznick might mean him turning on him. And making enemies of a Dixie sheriff might mean being unwelcome in the whole country. But they decided to risk it. They returned to the sheriff and played their tape. Reznick groaned with complaint and disappointment. His job had just gotten very hard, but he was going to do it. He had a deputy stay and sign witness statements while he went and arrested their Executive.
Having done a good days work, they left the sheriff's office. The Governor's Mansion Inn had been the Mississippi Governor's Mansion before the war. But the government of Dixie had turned it into a house for the people. The Inn was absolutely free to stay in, only requiring that each room be signed for every morning. The party asked for three rooms and received them. They got settled, but before retiring for the evening, Lex decided to do some scouting. To the best of her ability, she crept through the shadows and approached the Livestock Arena that Sheriff Reznick had warned them about.
And in the darkness, she swore she saw a small figure, no more than three feet tall. The creature was walking upright, with a strange gait. This being was round, wide and covered in thick fur. In fact, it looked a lot like a teddy bear...
