Thrakaal - The Great Bazaar

Rising like a jagged scar amidst the rolling grasslands of the Thorvaar Steppes, Thrakaal stands as a symbol of survival, strength, and relentless commerce. Positioned at the convergence of four great powers—Ro’Gnesh, Kirtoth, Stormhold, and Tetsuoka—this trade hub is a crucial nexus for diplomacy and trade, balanced precariously on the edge of conflict.

Geography and Significance

Thrakaal occupies a strategic location in the Thorvaar Steppes, nestled between the arid deserts of Ro’Gnesh and the fertile Golden Vale of Kirtoth. The Dragon’s Teeth Mountains to the east and the Yrichs Vein River to the south create natural barriers that define its borders. This transitional biome, teeming with nomadic tribes and raiders, serves as a natural buffer zone between the warlike nations.

The city’s neutrality is safeguarded by the Thrakaal Accords, a pact that designates the trade routes leading to Thrakaal as non-combat zones. Violating this fragile peace invites retaliation from the other three nations, ensuring compliance and preserving the city’s role as an indispensable hub.

Governance and Pragmatism

Thrakaal operates under a pragmatic system of shared self-interest. Each faction maintains a permanent post within the city and a fortified encampment nearby, tasked with upholding the Accords. These fluctuating forces are motivated by mutual vulnerability, enforcing strict discipline among their own to maintain stability and avoid reprisals during times of weakness.

Internal order is ultimately the responsibility the Strand Alpha Male, and his internal forces such as Strand Gnoll guards and H'rorc slaves. Kaftar enforcers in their human forms are also used as a go-between for human relations. While the Scavenger Church of the Gnollfolk provides spiritual guidance and oversees tribute collection, it takes a permissive stance on trade, ensuring that Thrakaal remains a free and thriving market.

A City of Contrasts

Thrakaal’s existence is one of contrasts. By day, it is a bustling center of commerce, where merchants and caravans bring goods from across the continent. By night, fires and lanterns light its chaotic streets, mixing revelry with the primal howls from the Blood Circle. Despite the ever-present tension, an air of uneasy order prevails—a balance enforced by the mutual necessity of its inhabitants.

Unlike the nations it serves, Thrakaal wields no soft power or political influence. It is not an empire or a kingdom but a predator—a place where survival is earned, and strength is the currency of life. Its role as a neutral ground allows warlike nations to pause their conflicts, if only briefly, to ensure the flow of goods vital to their ambitions.

Thrakaal’s Future

Though it thrives on pragmatism and necessity, Thrakaal’s influence may grow as the Thrakaal Accords solidify and its role as a trade hub expands. For now, it endures as a city that is neither mystical nor altruistic, but essential—a rare space where the chaos of the Warlands gives way to the tenuous order of commerce.

Districts

At the city's core lies the Bone Bazaar, the beating heart of Thrakaal’s economy. Traders from across the Warlands converge here under sprawling awnings patched together from hide and cloth, their vibrant hues a stark contrast to the sun-bleached terrain. Stalls and pavilions crowd the space, overflowing with goods both mundane and exotic. Surrounding the bazaar are the Gnoll Quarters, located to the south, housing the Gnollfolk who maintain a firm grip on the city’s governance.

To the north lies the Foreign Districts, a patchwork of trading posts and temporary quarters established by Thrakaal’s warlike neighbors. These districts include key posts for the Stormhold Machai, Kirtothian Empire, and Tetsuoka Namahage, with each post serving as a vital hub for their respective nations’ trade operations.

The Four Routes and the Thrakaal Accords

Thrakaal’s unique role as a neutral trade hub is preserved by the Thrakaal Accords, a pact forged between the four major powers of the region: Ro’Gnesh, Stormhold, Tetsuoka, and Kirtoth. Recognizing the value of Thrakaal as a center of commerce, the Accords designate the four major trade routes leading to the city as non-combat zones.

  • The Northern Route connects Thrakaal to the Kirtothian Empire, winding through the vast grasslands and linking to the trade hub of Varanthas, located two weeks away by horse and cart.
  • The Western Route passes through the Dragon’s Teeth Mountains and connects to the Stormhold encampments near the Glass Sea.
  • The Eastern Route runs through the Blightlands and the Tetsuoka Territories, ensuring safe passage for the disciplined Namahage caravans.
  • The Southern Route leads to the Heart of Ro’Gnesh, crossing the edge of the Durrash Wastes and linking to the Khule Desert.

Under the terms of the Accords, any nation that violates the neutrality of another trade route or attacks trade caravans risks facing a unified declaration of war by the other three nations. This mutual deterrence ensures compliance and maintains the tenuous peace that allows Thrakaal to thrive.

Encampments and Posts

Outside the city, each major power maintains a fortified encampment approximately 20 kilometers from Thrakaal. These encampments provide rest and security for traders and their guards after long journeys, serving as staging points before they proceed to the trading posts in the Foreign Districts.

  • The Kirtothian Encampment lies to the northwest, reflecting the empire’s pragmatic and centralized approach to trade.
  • The Stormhold Encampment, west of Thrakaal, is a bastion of practicality, housing the fractious Machai under the shadow of their uneasy unity.
  • The Tetsuoka Encampment, east of the city, mirrors the Namahage’s discipline and organization, ensuring safe passage for their trade caravans.

Each encampment is staffed with soldiers loyal to their respective Imperators, enforcing the Accords and acting as impartial arbiters of peace. Additionally, aides de camp stationed at these encampments oversee trade operations, ensuring that the shared services benefit their nations collectively while minimizing internal conflicts.

The Bone Bazaar and Great Auction House

The Bone Bazaar is a cacophony of commerce, filled with traders hawking rare spices, shimmering fabrics, and even exotic creatures bound for dangerous buyers. At its center stands the Great Auction House, a grim edifice where slaves captured in raids or sold by their captors are paraded before eager buyers. The oppressive atmosphere inside reflects the darker side of Thrakaal’s economy.

The Blood Circle

The Blood Circle, dominating the western quarter of the city, is a massive arena carved into the earth. Gladiators and war bands test their mettle here in brutal combat rites sanctioned by the Scavenger Church. These battles are both entertainment and demonstrations of dominance, their echoes resonating across the steppes.

The Temple of the Scavenger

Rising above the city is the Temple of the Scavenger, a grim edifice of stone and bone that serves as both a spiritual and administrative center. Its jagged spires pierce the sky, adorned with massive bones and offerings. Pilgrims and Scavengers gather here, seeking guidance or bearing tributes for the Sacred Collection.

Guilds and Factions

The dynamic trade ecosystem at Thrakaal hinges on the distinct resources, needs, and cultures of its four participating nations: Ro’Gnesh, Stormhold, Tetsuoka, and Kirtoth. Their unique contributions and demands create a balanced yet tense interplay of supply and demand, driven by both pragmatism and mutual distrust.

The Ro’Gneshi

Exports: Ro’Gnesh provides an array of raw materials and survival-adapted goods, including hides, leather, bonecrafted tools, medicinal herbs, exotic desert animals, sand-tempered glass, and Hyequines. Their slaves, particularly Aard Gnolls and H’rorcs, are sought after for their utility in labour and warfare.
Imports: As a primarily carnivorous and desert-adapted society, the Gnolls have a high demand for preserved foods, alcohols, and durable tools. They value Kirtothian Elf meat for its rarity and prestige, as well as Stormhold Goblin Glass weapons and Tetsuoka Hoblin-crafted armor, which enhance their military capabilities.

The Stormhold Machai

Exports: Stormhold’s volcanic islands produce Goblin Glass—a prized commodity for weapons, tools, and mystical applications. They also trade Moho skin, ray and shark skins, exotic volcanic metals, and Greater Goblin Glass weapons crafted by the Menehune. Exotic animals like leopard kittens and flying reptiles, as well as slaves, round out their offerings.
Imports: Stormhold warbands demand Hyequines from Ro’Gnesh for their endurance in harsh environments and Tetsuoka Hoblin steel weapons for their durability. They also seek Kirtothian foodstuffs to sustain their armies and rare goods like alcohol and preserved fish to maintain morale during campaigns.

The Tetsuoka Namahage

Exports: Tetsuoka dominates the market with Sen-jū war beasts, Hoblin-crafted weapons, armor, and tools, as well as slaves from their conquered territories. They also bring rare Blightland materials like salt, alchemical ingredients, and hardy hardwoods, along with gold and minerals from the Thalveil Range.
Imports: As a war-focused society, Tetsuoka craves Goblin Glass weaponry from Stormhold to arm their warbands, Hyequines for transport and cavalry, and Kirtothian preserved foods to sustain their forces. Elf meat is a luxury their warlords use to showcase dominance.

The Kirtothians

Exports: Kirtothians supply preserved Elf meat, Craft and Draft Elfs as slaves, and War Carts, revolutionizing trade logistics with their magical storage. They also bring agricultural goods, alcohol, livestock, and preserved fish, ensuring a steady flow of essentials to the other nations.
Imports: Kirtoth seeks bonecrafted tools and desert herbs from Ro’Gnesh, Goblin Glass weapons and exotic animals from Stormhold, and Hoblin-crafted steel armor and tools from Tetsuoka. These imports enhance their agricultural, logistical, and military capabilities.

History

As Ro’Gnesh expanded northward beyond the start of the Yrych’s Vein River, they encountered the Dragon’s Teeth Mountains to the east. A jagged range reaching westward, it formed a natural barrier, leaving a narrow gap between its foothills and the central steppes. This chokepoint, strategically positioned within the Thorvaar Steppes, became the ideal location for a northern sentinel of Ro’Gnesh. Pushing further north was possible but strategically unwise—it would forfeit the protection of the natural barrier and expose Ro’Gnesh to a wider range of adversaries, including Kirtoth, Martok, Qet, and the nomadic raiders of the Golden Vale, a region rich with verdant agricultural land.

Thrakaal’s Founding

Thrakaal was initially constructed as a defensive stronghold to guard against these threats and to serve as a potential site for political negotiations. In its early years, it was a frontier settlement where human clans and tribes mingled with the Gnollfolk of Ro’Gnesh. These humans, bringing spices from the deserts to the south and the Blightlands, attracted northern traders seeking to establish profitable routes. Over time, trade overshadowed its defensive purpose, and Thrakaal evolved into a bustling gateway for commerce between the northern and southern halves of the continent.

The Shifting Power Dynamics

The balance of power in the region shifted dramatically when Kirtoth invaded and conquered Martok, while Qet suffered territorial losses due to instability in the south. With Martok absorbed and Qet weakened, northern human traders dwindled to primarily Kirtothians and raiders. Meanwhile, Machai Hobgoblins from the mountain passes began traveling to Thrakaal, followed by Namahage Hobgoblins from the Blightlands.

The Machai trade tribes played a pivotal role in unifying the disparate warbands of their people, ultimately leading to the formation of the Stormhold and the establishment of the Stormforge Accords. Inspired by this success, the Namahage took similar lessons back to the Blightlands, founding the Tetsuoka Territories and the Tetsuoka Accords.

The Thrakaal Accords

The codification of rules in Stormhold and Tetsuoka echoed back to Thrakaal, where these behaviors influenced the burgeoning trade hub. Ro’Gnesh, recognizing the immense value of organized and secure trade, reinforced Thrakaal with additional Gnollfolk to ensure its stability and growth. Zones were established for each major nation—Ro’Gnesh, Kirtoth, Stormhold, and Tetsuoka—and the loose agreements of the past were formalized into the Thrakaal Accords.

These accords designated trade routes as neutral, non-combat zones and established a framework for tribute collection. In exchange for safe passage and fair trade, all participants contributed resources to the Scavenger Church and Thrakaal’s governance. Over time, the city transformed into the vital and complex trade hub it is today—a precarious but thriving center of commerce, politics, and survival.
