Dragon's Jaws

The port of Dragon’s Jaws juts into Dragon's Mouth Bay, a thin strip of civilisation that is clearly designed far more for functionality than for beauty. The sailors and officials who live and work there come from families who have done so for generations. As the largest port in An-Teng and the sea access for the nearby City of the Steel Lotus it is growing at a pace that the old families cannot match, leading to a new underclass of day labourers and rootless people.

Being sent to Dragon's Jaws is a punishment that often looks like a second chance, but newcomers to the port soon discover that their "chance of a lifetime" remains forever out of reach behind the tight social networks that keep the port functioning. It is also the last refuge for the misbegotten who try to leave the kingdom from here but usually end up trapped in poverty (or literally trapped by slavers). Even amongst those with social support poverty is the norm, like many places there is not enough available silver for a cash based economy (Money in Dragon's Jaws) but here the problem has been weaponised by the rich to prevent those below them from reaching even moderate affluence.

Covering an isthmus projecting into Dragon's Mouth Bay it has two fine storm resistant anchorages (rare on this rocky coast), the nothern one used by most of the foreign trade to the principalities and the southern by the Realm military. Looming over both is the Forbidding Eye of Hesiesh, an ancient fort that is rumoured to date back to the FIrst Age where the thousand strong Realm garrison of the city lives under the command of Shuri the Scarlet.

While basically a mud flat criscrossed with canals the city seems unaffected by the movement of the sea and wind, presumably due to pacts between the lineage of the Shore Prince and the local Spirit Court.
