fought 20 years after
the 18 years war a battle which helped in the process of the grand military revolution it was the first battle where the regiment gun system was used against an alliance of several clans of the badlands the verainberg empire and the tsardoms.
The Conflict
Prelude
20 years previously the the 18 years war ended. George olinberg 1st father was dead along with his cousins and he was know king. he inherited a broken real with an older sister as co-queen. the 18 years war however had had no effect on the northern isle kingdom holding in the northern badlands. many of the clans sworn to the kings of the isle had sent men to fighting for him and his father. however know the king's regents were not able to financial justify holding onto the lands in the badlands which stretched to the city of the wolf (the capital of the badlands). many of the council of regents wanted to focus on rebuilding and modernizing the shattered armed forces. over time several clans began to defect to there former masters however a long period of northern isle occupation had left resentment in the eyes of the old wolves (as the party who remained stoic against the isle invasion and occupation became to be known.). but by the time he was 16 453YBCW George olinberg 1st was able to rule in his own right. he was his fathers son and he quickly established a forces in the capital of the badlands colony of olinhom. the force as made up of some 4000 men from the isle equipped with some 40 regimental guns and new innovation made by the the king when he was 14. this force frightened the party's in the badlands and the empire. the 23 year old emperor Manfred Hallsberg 1st saw the possibility of renewed war with the isle and didn't want to relive the wars of his father. the young emperors cousin the 50 year old tsar Alexander 1st (who had become tsar after his father died 466YBCW) also wanted to get rid of the isle influence in thee badlands. the wolf king in 453YBCW was the 17 year old James 3rd wanted his lands purged for the isle influence. the three partys banded toghter and marched and army of 13000 men into the isle colony and was repulsed.
449YBCW- at this time George was 28 years old and had established himself in the colony with an army of 6000 men and 100 guns. Manfred was 27 and Alexander was 54. James 3rd was 21 years old. the three leaders of the opposition became know as the alliance of the wolf as the treaty was signed in the city of wolves with the blood of each signatory. the planned attacked would consist of a three way invasion. James would rally and army of some 7000 men and march west. Manfred said he would march north from Asbang with 4000 men. tsar Alexander would march north with an army of 5000 men. the three allies would converge and a total force of 16000 would march on Georges colonial capital of olinhom. this invasion wasn't properly thought through and the three allies found it hard due to the fact that the clans loyal to George attacked the alliance of the wolf forces and whittled down there forces. however the troops loyal to the olinbergs were forced back and to the coastal settlements. all three commanders decided to converge of Georges stronghold at olinhom early.
George 1st was able to prepare as he was fighting a defensive battles. he ordered his cavalry to dismount as the spring weather had melted the thick snow and turned the land to mud. they dug anti cavalry trenches and put spikes into the ground in front of there positions.
the alliance forces were placed under the overall command of tsar Alexander as he was the senior member of the alliance. his forces however had taken more than half strength without facing a proper battle. his 2000 troops mainly cavalry were arranged on the flanks. when James arrived his clans men some 5000 men were in the center and would make up a sledge hammer. the verainberg forces were on the southern flank and numbered some 1500 men mostly infantry in order to out flank the enemy
beginning of battle- around 5am the alliance forces began there march. however it was slow and there lack of artillery left them exposed. George used this to his advantage and used his own artillery against the advancing enemy. he sent 3000 of his men south to deal with Manfred's forces. the battle between the two forces separated the verainberguers from there allies. Manfred at the head of 70 of the imperial guard found George in the battle. the tow monarchs duel but George using the skills and magic he had learned in the black library the bested the younger Manfred and took him captive. his remaining 700 troops were routed.
Alexanders attack-knowing the land was not suitable for his cavalry Alexander ordered his cavalry men to dismount and the lancers to use there lances like pikes. those with pistols were in the front. the total force was around 7000 and when Alexander attacked Georges 3000 men in the south were not yet back in position. Alexanders guns however had to be left behind and had made little mark in the battles. the dis-organised clans men lead by there wolf king James charged head long into the muskets of Georges army. ranks were cut down and the cannons tore bloody holes in there ranks but they didn't brake and succeeded in engaging the forward ranks of the army.
Georges counter attack- force marching his 3000 men back to there original positions George was able to reach his line just as the force he had left began to buckle. he himself commanded on foot and rallied the forces he was reinforcing. he then ordered a counter attack seeing the fact that the clans men were tired. this counter attack slaughtered the clans men and alot of the tsars forces. at this point the tsar retreated with 12 of his guard back to the city of the wolf.
the rout-seeing the senior commander flee the clans men grew disheartened even more the verainberg forces on the flank hadn't appeared. this loss of moral turned many troops way and when the first man ran another joined him and soon the army was in full on retreat. the tsarist forces stayed behind but all were either killed or captured.
with most of the army dead or wounded or gone and with one of the commanders captured the alliance fell apart and king James offered terms of surrender. the tsar was forced to leave with his ban of 12 soldiers and return home.
seeing how good the regiment gun system was all armys adopted it as part of the grand military revolution.
