Methane Tinny

Written by Etoilebane

The original crafts capable of crossing the methane seas were imported by The Federation of Free Planets during the Ayun-Ausralia re-settlement period. Made by the finest engineers available, their gleaming hulls and mag-lev engines crossed the seas of the planet with ease. Between activity from the Nasyk left behind from the Somnolent occupation of the planet and complications involving the local wildlife and methane related faults, few have survived.

Modern methane boats employ scavenged engines, contained electric propellers and oars for propulsion. The gleaming hulls of the crafts are gone, instead replaced with cobled together bits of scavenged crafts, leftover dome jacketing, forged and pressure welded sheets of metal and small amounts of methane clathrate.

An annual race of the crafts takes place, mostly for amusement and to check designs. Two winners are selected from each race and are judged based on speed, design and ingenuity;they recieve a comission for their design and an invitation to dine at the Prime Minister's Manor.
We need a better way to cross, to be honest. Between the less than friendly locals and the chance of the crafts randomly exploding, they're not exactly popluar. Sure, we can use oars, but it's just not the same as zipping about the seas. Maybe nuclear propulsion?
— Bryce Westminister IV, First Prime Minister of Ayun-Ausralia

Propulsion

Methane Tinnies are propeled through a variety of different means. Older crafts, and ones made from higher-end scavenged materials often have a rudimentary magnetic propulsion system that either pushes the craft, or propels the craft slightly over the freezing sea.
Newer and lower end boats try to emulate hovercrafts and fan boats or require oars to move.
A series of modified 2-stroke engines were initially considered, with disastrous results. Wreckage from these crafts can be found just off the coast from the Westminister dome, for those interested.
