Charran Character in Erroth | World Anvil

Charran (CHA-run)

Lord of Fire

Son of Traebal, Charran was discarded as a child and forced to fend for himself in Phlegethos, the Fourth Circle of Hell, before being picked up by Skaomune  and raised as his lieutenant. As such, he inherited Skaomune's craze for power, but his anger against his father fuelled him to become reckless. He drew power from the eternal flames around him, becoming a being of immense infernal power, controlling fire and flame as if he were bound by the very heat that caused the eternal flames to burn forevermore. The mortal realms had always had an obsession with fire, attracting Charran much attention from the mortals, particularly those who had done harm or been harmed by flame, either physically or emotionally, giving Charran a way for his own anger to easily corrupt their vulnerable souls. He will often appear as a rose at first to draw his followers in under a false sense of beauty and delicacy, then once he has corrupted them he will appear in his full power as a great fire, consuming all that mean to stand in his way.

History

When Ambriel was but a child, she heard the rumours throughout the Ancient Grove that a Fallen Lord was going mad and, after failing to banish his wife to mortality, he instead fled, banishing his child to Phlegethos, the 4th Circle of the Nine Hells - hoping that the eternal flames would eat away at him until he was no more. Unable to fathom how any parent could be so cruel, Ambriel sought the counsel of her father, Maroth, hoping that he would allow her to find this abandoned child and discover why he had been banished to the Hells. Her father, however, declined - unwilling to get involved in the affairs of the Fallen Lords, he forbade his daughter from travelling somewhere so dangerous. Ambriel, however, still felt the need to at least speak with this abandoned child and sought out her mother, Eytelania. After some convincing, Eytelania showed Ambriel a hidden passageway between the planes - one which would allow her to journey safely between the Ancient Grove and Phlegethos without detection.   When she finally arrived, Ambriel was horrified to find a child no older than herself bound by chains of flame, screaming in agony as the flames of Plegethos slowly ate away at his Godly form. Seeking to ease his burden, the young Ambriel began to channel her own power to create a small grove around Charran. Recreating it as quickly as the flames would eat it, Ambriel sat in her grove with Charran and attempted to speak with him - but he was unable or unwilling to listen as the pain of his intense torture had already begun to drive him mad. Yet still, she persisted. She sat with Charran for days in the flames of Phlegethos, unmoving, unflinching, simply humming and singing to herself and Charran as she continually wove her magic to maintain an area hopefully untouched by flame. Eventually, the young lord spoke for the first time, his lips blistered and cracked, his throat harsh and sore. He questioned why Ambriel was there, why she cared enough to remain in this torture with him, and why she attempted to help when his own father had condemned him. Ambriel simply smiled and drew forth water from her small grove to soothe his burns. Finally satisfied, Ambriel bade Charran farewell and promised that she would visit again, before returning to the Ancient Grove, with no sign of her time left in Plegethos - save a small patch of cool grass that Charran could stand or kneel on, somewhat safer from the flames.   Over the following thousands of years, as both Gods grew older, Ambriel's visits gave Charran comfort and strength to withstand the flames - providing him with the drive he needed to begin to conquer the flames, that they might never harm him or (although he would not have admitted it at the time) Ambriel. The encounters left their mark on Ambriel too. She began to devote her time to creating a piece of nature which could remain unaffected by the flames of hell, eventually succeeding. At one of the lowest points of his life, the young teenage Charran hadn't seen Ambriel for quite some time. Unbeknownst to him, Maroth had found out about their meetings and had closed Ambriel's only safe route to Phlegethos. What Maroth did not know, was Ambriel's grove remained - a vestige of her power in an otherwise desolate landscape. As Charran began to succumb to the flames, a small rose delicately emerged from the now nearly destroyed patch. A rose entirely unharmed by the flames of Phlegethos. At first, Charran almost did not notice, but then more roses began to blossom, and with their bloom, the small patch of singed grass gleamed with renewed vigour and began to spread - putting out the fires as the strange roses drew them in. With new hope and strength, Charran began to channel the command of fire on which he had been working and, finally, after thousands of years he was free and Charran, Lord of Fire was born.   Charran immediately made his way to the Infernal Dominion in search of his father, but he was nowhere to be found - still in hiding through fear of Wrux, now overjoyed at the return of her son. With little time or care for reunion, Charran immediately petitioned Skaomune, Emperor of Darkness and ruler of the Dominion, begging for one single journey to the Ancient Grove to speak with Ambriel. Impressed by the fire of this young God, Skaomune accepted on the condition that Charran take a seat on his council to serve as one of his lieutenants. With the offer accepted, Skaomune bade Shaxzar ferry Charran through any secret routes he knew to the Ancient Grove and warned them to avoid detection.   At last, Ambriel and Charran were reunited, and she was overjoyed at how well her flowers had worked, and the demeanour of the newest of the Fallen Lords. Although she begged for him to reconsider and to join her in the Ancient Grove, Charran had already pledged himself to Skaomune for this one meeting. As Shaxzar watched, hidden in the distance, the two Gods finally embraced for the first time. Knowing that her Lord could not stay Ambriel whispered to the Lord of Fire that her Rose Woodlet would remain in Phlegethos as a testament to their time together, untouched by the eternal flames, and she would await him there. She would find a way to manifest herself in that small piece of nature in a foreign location, and they could be together there. Unbeknownst to them, Shaxzar heard the secret whispered by Ambriel in the Grove, and he sought to use it should the Lord of Fire ever step out of line... It has remained one of his best and closest kept secrets to this day, now a firm friend to his brother-in-arms.   Charran, able to manifest himself in the flames of Phlegethos, would return to the Fourth Circle many times, warding away the devils who came investigating, creating the legend of a terrible inferno which would decimate any who dared approach the strange Unkindled Roses. Eventually, Charran returned as was his routine, to find a magnificent thicket of fruit-bearing trees and bushes, obscuring the small woodlet of roses. Intrigued, he pushed through the trees to find Ambriel there, finally, waiting for his return. Finally, the two Gods had a place to themselves, alone, separated from the ever-fighting Gods, where their love could blossom like the strange flora found only in this singular location. The pair were wed in secret, and when they were sure of their conviction, they revealed their love to the other Gods, refusing to heed their anger, their warnings and their arguments, and together they have remained since - eventually bearing the twins Telphon and Traxis, still to this day returning often to their sacred meeting place to forget the War, and to rekindle their love for each other.
