Cliffsedge

Demographics

Racial Demographics

The village of Ciffsedge is mostly human with only a few families from other races. Being far from the coast there are actually very few Sea Elves or Coastal Dwarves. A few Feravir families make their homes here but for the most part the only permanent residents are human.

Economic Demographics

Nearly all of the population of Cliffsedge are farmers or woodsmen. There are only a few in the "village center" who practice a trade.

Government

The city of Cliffsedge runs by a council. The councilmen are chosen from each major industry in the village. The current council is made up of a representative from the farmers, one from the tradesmen, one from the woodsmen, and one from the guild. The guild's councilmen holds the most power getting their authority from the Vestonian government.

Defences

A series of small watch towers have been erected at different locations to allow residents to easily see if a fire or worse breaks out. A few ditches have been dug out with a short palisade to surround the village center in case of goblin or bandit attacks but these are rare enough that the wall itself is in poor condition.

Industry & Trade

Cliffsedge make what modest income it can by shipping its grains and lumber down river to the provincial capital of Goldenknock otherwise very few travelers make their way to the village. A couple times a year a traveling merchant makes their way up to Cliffsedge to do business with the residents.

Infrastructure

The residents of Cliffsedge are hardy and resilient folk. Despite the little contact with the rest of the country they have made their home a rather comfortable place. They have built a modest watermill and a small lumberyard. Both of these are built on the Tongren river.

History

The village of Cliffsedge was founded by adventurer and pioneer Tolin Clifford. Tolin traveled by the location of what would be Cliffsedge during one of his travels. He saw visions of a massive city rivaling even Hightower. He was lead to believe by a fortune telling hedgewitch that the mountains nearby held enormous strains of gold and so he gathered a large crowd. He was exceptionally persuasive and so they large group of settlers headed out into the wilderness. When they arrived at the location it quickly became apparent that there was no gold to be found in the mountains. Resentment stirred among the group. Most had given up all of their belongings in order to make the journey and so had no home to return to. it wasn't long before Tolin Clifford "slipped" while walking a mountain pass and split his head open on an outcropping of rock. The townsfolk began to refer to that rock as Cliff's edge. This was eventually shortened to Cliffsedge. the residents of the town did the best with what they had and they were able to turn the village into a respectable little community.   Despite being a small village on the very outskirts of the Magocracy, Cliffsedge has had one moment of importance. It was eventually discovered that the Dwarven city of Undermountain was located in the nearby mountains. Until the city of Riventow was built, Cliffsedge was the closest village to the entrance and was the easiest way to trade with the Grey Dwarves.

Geography

The village lies in a valley with the Atmos Mountains and the Tongren river to the north and the Wild Wood to the south. A wild place, people rarely leave the paths as the woods and mountains are treacherous. Rock slides and crumbling paths are common and the river can swell and reach dangerous speeds in the wet season. Most of the farming must be done on terraces but there are a few places with land flat enough to provide proper fields.

Natural Resources

The trees on the outskirts of the Wild Woods provide a good source of lumber for the village. The fields around the area are able to produce enough grains and rice for not only the village but also enough to send some downstream to the capitol.
