Goldenknock

Government

The city of Goldenknock, like all cities in Vestonia is run by the Mages guild. like most of the other provincial capitals it has its own small circle or council of Mages who are responsible for running the city and the surrounding region. One mage from each discipline of magic has a seat on this council and they mimic the High council of Hightower in form and in structure. Currently Miralen Urlyxsis is the head of the council.

Defences

Goldenknock is surrounded by two sets of walls. The inner city has the magical barrier that prevents anyone from entering the upper class districts while the outer city is surrounded by a physical stone fortification. Towers are stationed at intervals and members of the Abjuration and Evocation guild are stationed there to defend the city.

Industry & Trade

Goldenknock is the center of trade and commerce for the region. As much of the region's industry relies heavily on forestry The ports are constantly full of ships carrying logs and timber out into the rest of the country. the city also sees a lot of trade with the adventuring guilds that have stationed themselves within the region. Due to the region's fame as the last wild region of Westreach, many adventuring and exploration guilds have set up shop within the city and require vast supplies that are shipped in from all of the country.

Infrastructure

Goldenknock is made up of multiple districts that are cordoned off not by walls but by magical barriers that require authorization to pass.

Guilds and Factions

As with all cities in Vestonia, the Mages guild is the most prominent and powerful of the factions within Goldenknock. The different sub guilds of these are in charge of running the day to day operations of the city. There are however other guilds that make their home within the city, both official and unofficial.  
The Magzana Exploration guild
The Magzana as they are often called are a rough collection of explorers and cartographers that aim to map and discover as much of the world as possible. They differ from other adventuring guilds in that they usually hire adventurers to go to new locations and only once the monsters have been dealt with and the treasure has been collected is it that they themselves will travel to the location to explore and map it out.  
Vexna's Guild of Mercenaries
Rather than just one company of mercenaries, Vexna's guild is a central hub for all mercenary companies to represent themselves within the city. The main companies within Goldenknock are Rishkar's Irregulars, the Algerian Aggressors, and the Boshton Company.  
The Cattails
A known underground guild of thieves and cut-purses. Though much has been done to eradicate them and push them out of the city they refuse to leave and always seem to jump right back up.

History

The city of Goldenknock began as a small fishing village in the early days of the The Westreach Federation. Over time as more people began to move into the region the city grew and became a central hub fro trade along the coast and the two rivers its lies between. After the fall of the Federation and the rise of Vestonia the city grew quickly and the region was used as a training area for the evocation guild. Villages and farms began to sprout up along the Tongren and Somber rivers and with these villages brought more trade and people to Goldenknock. While currently it is the smallest of the provincial capitals in Vestonia it one of the fastest growing cities in the region due to the surrounding wilderness and unclaimed lands.

Architecture

Rather than build their city in a more traditional way the Mages of Goldenknock decided to get creative and experiment with a truly magically created city. Much of the architecture if the city is created and designed by magic. While most of the buildings are made from stone there are whole areas of the city where trees have been grown magically into buildings themselves. there are very few traditionally built houses or buildings within the city.

Geography

Goldenknock lies on the northeastern coast of lake Aether and to the north are the Misty hills and to the east is the Hangman's bog. The region is wild and untamed. many dangers can be found off the roads and even travelers on the main roads are apt to run in with bandits or worse.
