Varkart

Demographics

Varkart is sometimes referred to as "The City of Leftovers", an incredibly diverse township nestled just north of Od[Huvora] in the Henderi Peninsula. Elvish races compromise the largest percentage of the population at >23%. The remainder is a melting pot of races from all over the world.

Government

After the dissolution of The Commonwealth of Anbhor, Varkart struggled to find a legitimate and permanent form of governance. Many powerful and influential local guilds stepped up to try and fill the power vacuum, but none could secure enough of the public trust. With Varkart teetering at the edge of collapse, the people agreed to do something almost unheard of in the modern world: They sacrificed their autonomy to become a vassal state.   The economic and military powerhouse of Huvora seemed like the obvious choice for the people of Varkart to become citizens of, but a young Aaracokra named Raeriss Qlire warned of Huvora’s incompetent leadership. She was unwilling to place her safety and the safety of her neighbors in the hands of a monarch as young as Alphonse Villanova. Over the course of three years, she slowly steered public opinion in favor of the ancient elven capital of Aldrané. A strengthening of their historic relationship and exclusive trade partnership was highly popular and the protection offered by the emerald elves was considered second to none—an important consideration when Huvora’s standing army grew larger each day and no institution set to punish any acquisitions of land.   Now a dependent of the Crown of Thorns, Varkart is a thriving city-state with a highly stable economy and a quickly growing population. The relationship has proved successful in short time, with less resources going toward a standing army and protection, the people of Varkart have devoted significant time to researching new technology, exploiting never before found resources in the Henderi Peninsula, and forging new powerful spells. Not only is it more powerful than ever, Aldrané is as well.

Infrastructure

The four largest institutions within Varkart are all guilds, each providing an essential service for the town as well as creating jobs and highly important trade. Though the town does not have much to speak of in the way of infrastructure, these four guilds make up the backbone of the settlement.   Figman's Hall, a blend between a craftsman guild and smithy. They fabricate everything from houses and furniture to weapons and armor. Recently they have been experimenting with a new technology, Airships. The first port has been constructed in Aldrané, borrowing from notes of a similar design many years ago in Bearingpool.   Cardell's Crest, an inventors guild founded by Cardell Hawke some 30 years ago. The smallest of the four, The Crest comes in to find and engineer creative solutions to unique issues within the town.   Roarke and Murtaugh, a harbor guild that facilitates sea travel and trade between Varkart and Aldrané. Varkart’s unique trade relationship has allowed Roark and Murtaugh to become the largest harbor guild in the world, even larger than those that sail the might of the Rune River. It is so large that the Emberbarren sea has begun attracting Pirates of all sizes, perhaps inspired by the feats of Tyrannia Tombs.   Gurthis & Sons, an adventurer's guild founded nearly a century ago by Tyrindell Gurthis, a legend in the city. As an original member of The Last Chance Lancers he was in line to become 3rd Captain Commander before leaving the outfit to begin his own venture. Now the guild services nearly all the job postings north of Cania's Reservoir.

History

Varkart started as an attempted expansion of the sovereign territory of the Jade Elves of Aldrané. A small settlement was established at the edge of the Henderi Peninsula, across a 70 mile stretch of the Emberbarren Sea, to gather resources that were sparse within the deserts of Spirix like lumber, stone, and various crops.   Tensions between The Commonwealth and Aldrané rose in 820 after multiple territorial disputes. Eventually, in 825, an agreement was reached to allow the city of Varkart to fall under The Commonwealth's supervision and control. Locals in the area were much more experienced at gathering the resources needed in the east and had developed methods of harvesting that increased yield at much less cost. By allowing The Commonwealth to control the area, Aldrané was able to purchase the resources they were already looking for at a far lower price than they were capable of reaching alone.   When the Commonwealth suddenly collapsed, Aldrané was given a chance to reclaim the lands they originally tried to settle by the very people living on the land in 1117. Queen Veldera'an accepted the offer nearly instantly and the relationship has been strong ever since.
