Kingdom of Elliaster (Organization)

This is an article on the structure and system of the monarchy. For a more general description of the kingdom, please see the Location article on Elliaster.

Structure

The Kingdom of Elliaster is a dynastic, primogenital monarchy through and through, with its occasional bout of elective monarchy and adopted heirs when kings can’t produce their own. The kingdom has also experienced short theocracies when there had been no clear rule, and the Primates ruled from atop their Mast Tower in Ambarix. Similarly, if the Primates did not rule, the Sovarix order did so. There has yet to be any sort of democratic election or rule from Molierre, though who knows what the future holds.   At the moment, Dedrik has asserted himself as the king and ruler of Elliaster, but to say other parties are thrilled would be an overstatement. Only a small fraction of priests support him, and the majority (including Sovarine Knights) dispute his claim and actions to legalize Ylistrium.

King

Ruler of Elliaster. Receives taxes, soldiers and other goods from his/her direct vassals. Appoints viceroys and viscounts when necessary. Primogeniture law sees the firstborn inheriting most of the king’s land. In charge of creating kingdom-wide laws. Unlimited power to conscript and impress people to the army.

Duke

Owner of large swathes of lands. Generally has counts, barons, viscounts, margraves, etc, under them from which they receive taxes and soldiers from. Usually picked among them to act as close advisors to the king.

Viceroys and Vicedux

Non-hereditary and appointed by the King himself to oversee large portions of land. Not used in modern times anymore, but the duchy of Belcastel was once a viceroy.

Counts

Control smaller portions of lands and are generally under Dukes, but this is not always true nor does it mean they are weaker. They control multiple castles and baronies under them. Can be chosen to act as advisors to the king.

Viscounts

Typically non-hereditary and smaller in territory, viscounts are overseen by Counts themselves or appointed by higher-ups.

Margraves

A more titular title than the rest, Margraves were more important in times of war. This was given to counts and barons that controlled borderlands near conflict and it was their duty to raise armies and defend them. To do this, they were given large powers in terms of conscription and impression. Now that the kingdom is more unified, Margravites are less common.

Barons

The lowest form of the nobility, Barons typically only own one castle and oversee their towns much more closely than other nobles. They directly tax commoners and interact with bailiffs, mayors, etc.

Mayors and Bailiffs

Non-hereditary, they control towns and villages. Usually not powerful, but in the case of the Molierre region, they represent the ruling class. Oversee legal matters, disputes, trade, etc.

Currency
In the Kingdom of Elliaster there exist three different types of coin, with an unofficial fourth. From lowest to high: Copper, Silver, Electrum, and Gold. The most common form of exchange, however, is done almost exclusively by bartering.   Gold   The highest form of currency, gold, is very rare. Practically non existent in the Banlew and Overlook. However, almost entirely the only currency used by the nobility.   Electrum   The second highest currency. A mixture between silver and gold. Not very common anywhere, though will sometimes be used by the nobility when dealing with the lower class.   Silver   The third highest currency. Very commonly used in the Shells, and seldom seen in the Banlew/Overlook.   Copper   The most common and lowest form of currency. This is used mostly in the slums and Overlook, though you might see patrons buying smaller items in the Shells with this.   Bartering   In the slums, Overlook, Tunnels, and outskirt towns, bartering is the most common form of economic exchange. Though Copper is quite easy to come by, and the coinage not rare, most people prefer to barter nonetheless, especially when currency exchange does not exist.
