King Dedrik Ignas Medois (a.k.a. The First Lion)
To many, Dedrik, a very very distant relative of the King, was a noble that appeared out of nowhere to win it all. Much like Kastyl, Belcastel was once divided into a multitude of independent baronies and counties. Somehow, almost overnight, Dedrik managed to unite many of the counts. Through plotting and honeyed words, Belcastel was united for the first time.
During his rise to recognition, he became a common face among other dukes in the kingly palace. King Baldun the Ill-Prepared was lazy and easy manipulated, a fact Dedrik took advantage of. Soon enough, the ailing king was only hearing the words of the Menshari duke, and after a year he proclaimed him his heir. There was outrage among the rest of the nobility even if it was within the King's right. Many nobles, particularly Giorgio Hekate, hotly contested the decree, trying to convince the king of the obvious: Dedrik had been orchestrating his rise to power, and there would be no line he wouldn't cross.
Some say the discovery of Ylistrium changed everything, but other more cynical onlookers claimed it only sped up the inevitable. Dedrik was able to convince the majority of the clergy to look the other way, and he funded many scientific projects with the ore. Soon enough, with Ossentum busy keeping the Kagoati at bay, Dedrik seized control of the kingdom with one swift battle. He was later crowned king as Baldun Grimoult abdicated and died of suspicious circumstances soon after.
Today, Dedrik has been appearing less and less in the public eye. Despite his victory and power, Kernaros still controls the Molierre region and are pushing further south to Belcastel.

History
Duke Giorgio Hekate has been Dedrik's biggest detractor ever since he showed up in the royal court. His defeat by Dedrik's hand at the siege of Herkat during the Ylistrium War has only soured the relationship further, but Giorgio has decided to be more subtle since.
