Nacado

It began as a simple castle overlooking the sea, a city of refugees displaced by the Great Rift. Now, Nacado has grown to be the pinnacle of human civilization. What many may jokingly refer to as the capitol, though it is but one city-state holding no official power over any other. Unofficial power is quite another thing, however, and Nacado's influence in Egera is great.

Demographics

Nacado has a primarily human population, although it is by far the most diverse of the Egeran city-states. Kentier and Elves are a common sight in all parts of the city, and even the occasional dwarf can be found, an extremely rare sight so far from the mountains.   The ruling class is entirely human, with the exception of a handful of elven dignitaries in largely ambassadorial roles. In fact, humans and elves dominate the upper classes. The more business-minded dwarves may find their way into the upper echelons of Nacadan society, but they and the kentier seem largely relegated to the working class.

Government

Nacado is an oligarchy ruled by the local nobility, as headed by a Lord or Lady designated as heir by the previous ruler. Traditionally, the Lord or Lady of Nacado is family to the previous head of state and claim's descent from the city-state's original founding families. Such is not required by law, however, and the head of state can designate anyone they deem fit as their heir.   With the growing integration of other races into Nacadan society there had been some demand for greater representation of those races among the ruling nobility, but it remains majority human.

Industry & Trade

Nacado has managed to turn itself into Egera's center of trade and industry. With its ties to the kentier tribes in the west, it's coastal location allowing a port for elven ships, and the river easing transport from distant dwarven lands, it is one of few cities that can facilitate direct trade among all four major races.   The docks and markets of Nacado are always busy. Goods come by sea from the Empire of Laintera to the south and it's much-closer colony of Haesan. And from the river the Kentier bring their produce and wares. Large barges bring dwarven goods from the far north. All of these goods change hands and then the ships and skiffs and barges go back from whence they came, often full again with new goods to trade back home.   Much of what comes into Nacado is raw material, metals and gems from the dwarves, fabrics and exotic foods from the elves, and a wide variety of produce from the kentier. As such, manufacturing has taken hold in Nacado as well. If a material can be turned into a salable product, you will find someone producing it in Nacado.

Geography

Situated on the delta where the Life River meets the sea, Nacado's geography is defined by coastlines and rivers. At its mouth the Life River is a delta nearly two miles wide and dotted with islands. In its infancy, the city covered only its eastern bank, but several generations later, and with the ever-increasing volume of trade coming by river and sea, it now spans this entire width.   The city center remains on that eastern bank, where on a bluff overlooking the sea sits the ruling family's castle surrounded by a lavish district where the rest of the nobility make their homes and affluent merchants set up shop. Extending to the east the streets grow wider and the buildings smaller and more sparse until the city itself gives way to farmland and small fishing villages along the coast. To the west docks and markets dominate, crowded for space on the river's small islands, connected by a maze of bridges and ferries.
