Empire of Laintera

The Elven Empire

From her earliest childhood, Shouri was a difficult child. Born into the ruling house Malora, from the day she was born she wanted for nothing. Her kingdom, Laintera, was wealthy, rich in resources and engaging in open trade with their neighbors. She lived in the lap of luxury, and was given everything her heart desired. And she knew, from as early as she could remember, that someday all of Laintera would be hers.   Princess Shouri was a strong willed and clever girl. But she was spoiled. With parents that allowed her free reign of the palace and its grounds, she took to bossing about servants, courtiers, and even visiting diplomats. She tested the limits of her power, and found them to be few.   Servants and courtiers began to fear her wrath, should they attempt to deny her anything. For what Shouri asked, her father the king gave. There was not a thing he would deny her, encouraging his eldest to exercise the powers that would be hers upon his death.   He failed to teach her restraint.   As she grew, and learned more of the world, Shouri grew jealous. She was a princess, and in her lands, her words were law. But this was not always the case. When her father began sending her on trips to the nations beyond their border, she learned that not everyone would do as she demanded. For her, this was unacceptable. When denied anything, she would rage, throwing tantrums, and later seething in quiet rage against perceived sleights. She was a princess, and soon she would be a queen, and to her mind no one but the Gods had the right to tell her what to do.   Certain of the king's advisers who were brave enough, spoke against maintaining her as his heir. This headstrong and power-hungry girl would not serve their kingdom well. But their protests fell on deaf ears, for the king doted on his daughter, and in his mind she could do no wrong.   It was little surprise to these men that, upon her coronation, Queen Shouri seized her new power with both hands. Finally, all of Laintera was hers. But soon, even this was not enough for her.   In 5675, Queen Shouri Malora ordered the first assault on the neighboring Kingdom of Kashal, breaking a millennia old treaty in the process. In 5679, after four long years of war, Kashal was hers. The other elven kingdoms followed, either by conquest or surrender, for no matter how much power she had in her grasp, it was never enough for Shouri. She was owed the world.   In 5702, her conquest of the continent concluded, Shouri named herself Empress of Laintera, Empress of all the elven peoples. Any who would not recognize her rule were subdued quickly and ruthlessly, for as always, Shouri would accept no dissent.   Today, the Empire has fallen into peace. Empress Shouri's successors did not possess quite her thirst for conquest. But expansion of the empire continues, a colony on the newly discovered continent of Egera provides a foothold there, should anyone choose to continue Shouri's power hungry legacy.   As for those who fought against her, rumors tell of tribes of guerrilla warriors hidden in the deep jungles, biding their time until they take their kingdom back. And some have seen ships sailing the remote coastlines, remnants of a vanquished fleet still living on the waves, pirates beyond the empire's grasp.

Territories

Officially, the Empire of Laintera lays claim to the entire Continent of Feihon as well as the colony of Haesan. In reality, there are portions of Feihon where imperial law does not yet touch, and Haesan's distance from the capitol allows a degree of autonomy.   In Feihon, the eastern jungles beyond the mountains continue to hinder attempts at establishing a governmental seat in the region, as do the Aswean Elves who actively rebel against empire control.

Foreign Relations

Today, the empire maintains friendly relationships with their northern neighbors on the Continent of Egera. Trade between the elves of Haesan and the various human-ruled city-states flourishes, although goods flowing from the empire are highly regulated. Laintera remains fiercely protective of its secrets, particularly in the realms of magic and technology, but also prideful of luxury goods which are often deemed too good for other races.   However, tension still remains between Laintera and what remains of Aswea in the east. The Aswean Elves still view themselves as a sovereign nation under hostile foreign occupation. Laintera, however, views Aswea as merely one of their provinces.
