Þól

Þól /θoul/ is a city in southern Kanot, one of the three countries of the Útels, located on the southern bank of the central Vúðúk River, between the settlements of Valóf downriver to the northwest, Kaþúryl upriver to the east and Haþúra in the woods to the southeast. It's the main settlement of the Þandans, one of the three Útel tribes inhabiting Kanot, the others being the Kalotics to the north and Veans to the west, and functioned as capital of the city-state Þandol before the Útels were unified millennia ago.
It's the only city in southern Kalot, one of the most sparsely populated regions in Ela'k Forest, with other settlements being limited to towns and villages concentrated by the river or along trade-routes to the country of Malónat to the east and south. The wilderness provides the people of Þól with plenty of resources that are hard to come by in the more densely populated northern and central parts of the country, including meat and skins from all sorts of wild game, certain medicinal plants and other materials used by mages, dyes and various edible berries (particularly yþral berries), nuts and caterpillars. The hunters of Þól in particular are considered some of -if not the- best among the Útels.

Infrastructure

Þól is planned much the same way as most major cities of the Útels, with neighbourhoods associated with different castes arranged in a semicircle around a marketplace by the river. A palisade marks the city's boundaries, beyond which are fields, vineyards, orchards, pastures, oak- and almond groves. A single bridge connects Þól directly to the lands north of the river, where the inhabitants traditionally make a wish by throwing small, carven bone figurines into the river, a custom dating back to the ancient Alalaríans.
As in other þandan settlements, most buildings are adorned with geometric patterns, usually painted green and orange.
