Twin Paradises/Bytopia

The Twin Paradises were between lawful good and neutral good in alignment. The two layers (Shurrock and Dothion) were described as hanging upside down from each other about 20 miles (32 kilometers) apart (from sea level to sea level), sharing the same sky. Gravity was normal for each layer but in opposite directions. The Twin Paradises were the home of Garl Glittergold, Baervan Wildwanderer, Segojan Earthcaller, and Flandal Steelskin of the Gnomish pantheon.   Great Wheel Cosmology
The Twin Paradises of Bytopia were two layers that formed one of the Outer Planes in the Great Wheel cosmology model representing alignments between lawful good and neutral good.   Some characteristics of this plane were ascribed to the World Tree cosmology planes of Golden Hills and the House of the Triad when that cosmology became popular. The Golden Hills became part of Arvandor after the Spellplague and the House of the Triad became known as Celestia as described by the World Axis cosmology.
“ No jink for your dinner? No problem. There's a roof that needs fixing — hop to it, lads!”
— Kendia, Bytopian innkeeper.

Realms

  • Baervan Wildwanderer the Forest Gnome, once had a realm in Dothion, among those of the rest of his pantheon. Baervan's tree, an ancient oak called Whisperleaf, grew on the side of a mountain that connected to a similar mountain on the Shurrock side.
  • Baravar Cloakshadow the Sly One, Gnomish god of deception, had his realm named the Hidden Knoll in Dothion protected with many traps.
  • Callarduran Smoothhands the Deep Brother, patron of the Svirfneblin, resided in his realm of Deephome in Dothion, a series of tunnels and caverns just outside The Golden Hills.
  • Flandal Steelskin the Forger, Gnomish god of smithies and mining, made his home, the Mithral Forge, in Dothion, along with the rest of his pantheon.
  • Gaerdal Ironhand, Shield of The Golden Hills and Gnomish god of combat, had his realm of Stronghaven in Dothion.
  • Garl Glittergold, chief deity of the Gnomish pantheon resided in Glitterhome in Dothion.
  • Gorm Gulthyn, protector of all dwarves, maintained his Watchkeep on Shurrock.
  • Ilmater the Crying God, god of endurance, suffering, martyrdom, and perseverance, once held a realm in the Twin Paradises, on the layer of Shurrock, called Martyrdom.
  • Segojan Earthcaller, Gnomish deity of earth and nature, had a realm named the Gemstone Burrow in Dothion, along with the rest of his pantheon
  • Tefnut, mother of Geb in the Mulhorandi Pantheon, lived in her realm of Windwrath in Shurrock.

Geography

Description

The two layers of this plane were joined at one barrier which happened to span the entire sky at about 10 miles (16km) above sea level. Gravity for each layer was normal for that layer but switched direction as soon as one crossed the barrier. The inhabitants of one layer could look up and see the other layer hanging upside down high overhead. Several mountains reached the crossover point and a few met mountains rising up from the other side, allowing careful climbers a way to reach the other layer. Also the space between layers was filled with air, allowing flight from one side to the other. Each layer glowed with a golden-white Light.
Dothion
Dothion was a bucolic land of old forests and huge meadows subject to mild seasonal changes and gentle weather. Portals to Seven Heavens, Elysium, and Concordant Opposition were found in caverns as brightly glowing patterns: concentric circles for the Seven Heavens, radiating lines for Elysium, and both patterns superimposed, which resembled a Spider Web, for Concordant Opposition. Travelers from the Astral Plane would emerge from the color pools on this layer.
Dothion was the first layer of Bytopia. It was a pastoral landscape, teeming with farms and industries. The layer resembled a pre-industrial world on the Prime Material Plane that was in the process of perfecting every aspect of life and Work. It was the location of The Golden Hills, the divine realm of the Lords of The Golden Hills in the Great Wheel cosmology.   Geography of Dothion The landscape of Dothion was orderly and domesticated. Farms prospered and grew, animals were confined to the properties of their owners, water-powered mills made high-quality flour and meal, mines yielded vast amounts of minerals, canals efficiently brought water everywhere, and roads were well traveled and well kept.   Dothion's farmers, miners, smiths, and artisans spent their lives joyfully producing food, wooden and Metal items, jewellery, and clothing from the raw materials widely available. The workshops and towns were dedicated to nothing but the common good.   The weather on Dothion was mild and with benign seasons. Occasionally a storm broke out from the opposite layer, Shurrock, but the climate was generally quiet throughout Dothion.   Defenses Towns across the layer lacked any protective fences or walls.   Notable Locations
  • The Baku's Gaveyard
  • Deephome, realm of the Svirfneblin god Callarduran Smoothhands
  • The Golden Hills, the realm of the Gnomish pantheon, took a large portion of the layer.

Shurrock
Across the barrier, Shurrock had much the same landscape features but much harsher weather: summers were hot and winters were long and cold. Storms were more common here, with booming thunder and heavy rains. Life on the Shurrock side was more challenging and kept the inhabitants busy, but both sides were virtuously industrious.
Shurrock was the second layer of Bytopia. An untamed wilderness, it was the location of Martyrdom, the divine realm of Ilmater in the Great Wheel cosmology.   Geography of Shurrock Unlike the mild weather and clear skies of the first layer, Dothion, the weather on Shurrock was harsh and unpredictable. Storms constantly ravaged the landscape, strong winds were almost constant and clear skies were very rare. The landscape was very mountainous, and the abundant creeks and rivers flowed fast throughout the layer.   Shurrock had an abundance of raw materials. As in Dothion, Shurrock was a place of hard Work and satisfaction from a job well done, but instead of taming the land, Work on Shurrock focused on the extraction of natural resources. The wild landscape of the layer was peppered with mines, mills, and quarries. Due to the layer's harsh weather and rocky, irregular terrain, most dwellings and active Work sites were underground.   Notable Locations of Shurrock
  • Centerspire, an enormous mountain that physically connected Dothion and Shurrock. It was a common land route between the layers.
  • Martyrdom, realm of Ilmater.
  • Watchkeep, the home of Gorm Gulthyn, protector of all dwarves.
  • Windwrath, the rainy realm of Tefnut, mother of Geb in the Mulhorandi Pantheon.

Fauna & Flora

Inhabitants

The animals in the Twin Paradises were sentient with average intelligence or above, but did not have the ability to speak. Some trees were also intelligent, similar to treants from the Prime Material Plane. The usual menagerie of Upper Plane creatures were found here, including solars, planetars, hollyphants, devas, foo creatures, baku, and agathia.   Inhabitants of the plane created a type of stout and a type of aromatic spiced nutbread with carrots and almonds. It was served in thick slices and tasted mildly sweet. These products could be found sold in the planar City of Sigil.
Inhabitants of Shurrock
Among other creatures native to both layers of Bytopia, Shurrock was inhabited by a race known as air sentinels, gentle and benevolent beings similar to djinn who guided visitors and traders to shelter against the perilous weather in the layer's abundant caves.   Shurrock was also home to the Adamantine Dragon Mercialla. She considered herself the guardian of all good things that existed in Shurrock, working together with the air sentinels.

Natural Resources

Trade

Trade between Shurrock and Dothion.
Most of the raw materials used in construction and the industries of Dothion came from Shurrock. In order to transport them there, traders braved the harsh weather of the layer to either reach a portal to Dothion, which was usually controlled by guilds that charged high tariffs, or to transport them directly there using a floating Gnomish contraption.   Taking advantage of the unique configuration of Bytopia, traders put their goods into protected baskets and sewed together large pieces of tarp into bags, which they filled with hot air. After attaching enough of these bags to the basket, it began to float until it reached the divide between the layers. By the time the load crossed the divide and started falling towards Dothion, the cooling air had lost enough of its buoyancy for the cargo to descend gently onto Dothion.
Trade in Dothion
Located near the central region of the layer, the city of Yeoman was the main trading post, through which all products from across Dothion were sold to travelers and caravans.   Exports Ale & Bread

History

When the multiverse was first created, before any mortals had yet died, Mount Celestia had no archons. The first seven martyrs of law and goodness whose souls arrived from the Material Plane were transformed into the plane's first archons and mandated with the role of ruling its seven layers for eternity. The seven martyrs and their successors continued to rule Celestia as the Celestial Hebdomad.

Tourism

Surviving

Dothion, Shurrock, and Betweensky offer no planar hostility towards life. The weather on Shurrock can be dangerous at times, and traversing Betweensky can be difficult, but Bytopia itself does not actively affect Living creatures like several other planes.

Getting There

Many portals exist to Bytopia from across the planes, many of them known and maintained by the Great Guildclanns that operate large operations across the multiverse. The key to many of these gates is a manufactured item of a specific type – a specific type of Wood or stone for example. These keys must be crafted over the course of several days while within a certain radius of the portal itself.
