The Abyss

The Abyss was the plane of chaotic evil, home of the demons and a seemingly limitless number of other foul monstrosities. The stronger sought to dominate the weaker and the weaker conspired to overthrow the stronger. It was estimated the Abyss had 666 layers but it could well have been an infinite number.   The first layer was called Pazunia (after Pazuzu, who was most often found there) or the Plane of Infinite Portals, or the Palace of 1,001 Closets. It was a barren land of dusty deserts scorched by a red sun.   Great Wheel Cosmology
    The Infinite Layers of the Abyss (pronounced: /ɑːˈbɪs/ a-BIS listen) was the birth place of the demons, a chaotic evil universe unto itself with uncountable layers of infinite variety connected haphazardly. The Abyss's place in the cosmology of the Forgotten Realms shifted over time, but the nature of the plane remained fairly constant: a violent, malevolent place where the strong survived on the backs of the weak, the weak conspired to overthrow the strong, alliances only lasted while convenient, and the landscape itself tortured the mind and body of all who dared to pass.

Realms

Relatively few greater powers carved out a realm in the Abyss because dealing with the ubiquitous hordes of demons and ambitious demon lords would require too much of their attention. Those deities for whom the chaotic evil nature of the Abyss was attractive at some point in time, along with the demon "royalty" whose names were not spoken openly in civil society, were:  
  • Ahazu the Seizer.
  • Baphomet created an Endless Maze that changed form as it passed between layers. It was populated by a variety of minotaurs said to have breath weapons or magical abilities.
  • Beshaba, the Goddess of Mischief and Maid of Misfortune once made her home in the Abyss.
  • Dagon controlled a watery layer filled with hezrou and aquatic dretch.
  • Demogorgon controlled several layers, each filled with dinosaurs, wild apes, and flying monsters as well as the usual demonkind.
  • Diinkarazan, crazed twin brother of derro deity Diirinka, was held by a curse in the Prison of the Mad God, the 586 layer.
  • Eltab lurked on this plane in the "Hidden Layer".
  • Fraz-Urb'luu had a realm that reportedly rivaled the beauty of the Twin Paradises or Arvandor but it was an illusion covering decay and rotting flesh.
  • Garyx the All-Destroyer, dragon god of fire, made his lair somewhere in the Abyss.
  • Gorellik, the abandoned god of the gnolls, spent much of his time wandering the Abyss.
  • Grankhul, the hunter god of the bugbears, had the 241st layer, Palpitatia, as divine realm.
  • Graz'zt had a great palace that covered an entire layer where he would marshal his armies to fight Orcus and Demogorgon.
  • The Great Mother, tyrannical chief deity of the beholders, held her Realm of a Million Eyes on the 6 Layer.
  • Grolantor, god of the hill giants, stayed in the Abyss when not in his realm in Tarterus.
  • Juiblex lived in a layer full of fungus and rot, where slimes and molds fed off the decaying matter of the plane, and each other.
  • Kali, the feared Black Earth Mother of the Vedic pantheon, held sway over both the 500th layer, and the Caverns of the Skull, the 663rd layer.
  • Kostchtchie controlled only part of a layer, but his ice palace was filled with creatures of cold.
  • Laogzed, god of troglodytes, had a realm called the Rotting Plain here.
  • Lolth spun her webs on the 65th layer in the midst of a maelstrom that was the portal to her abode on the 66th layer before she became a greater god and removed her Demonweb Pits from the Abyss to join the fiendish planes. After the Spellplague her realm survived to float in the Astral Sea.
  • Merrshaulk, the ancient yuan-ti deity, resided on the 74 layer called Smaragd.
  • Moander, the Rotting God, had a realm called Offalmound on the 223rd layer, also known as Rarandreth, before his demise.
  • Obox-ob once had a realm here called Zionyn.
  • Orcus had an enormous palace made of bones, rising out of a field of bone dust. He employed many undead as his guards and servants.
  • The Pack, a group of powerful entities worshiped by the leucrotta, roamed the Abyss in search of prey (usually tanar'ri).
  • Pale Night, the Mother of Demons, lived in a bone castle in the maze of Baphomet and controlled her own layer called Androlynne.
  • Pazuzu had no real home but controlled the skies above every layer of the Abyss. He, like Charon on the Styx, controlled a primary mode of travel in the Abyss and was respected if not feared.
  • The Queen of Chaos ruled the fourteenth layer called the Steaming Fen.
  • Ramenos, the deity of the bullywugs, slumbered on the 74 layer most of the time, sharing Merrshaulk's realm of Smaragd.
  • Skiggaret, the bugbear god of fear, shared the realm of Palpitatia with his fellow power Grankhul.
  • Sseth, the god of the yuan-ti, called his realm on the 74 layer the Viper Pit.
  • Tharizdun, the god of destruction who created the Abyss, was imprisoned in a remote layer of the Abyss during the Dawn War.
  • Umberlee, the Bitch Queen once hailed from the Abyss.
  • Urdlen, the evil gnome deity carved his realm out of a layer of solid rock, crisscrossing it with tunnels filled with hate for beautiful things.
  • Vaprak, deity of trolls and father of ogres, had a realm here on a layer called Shatterstone.
  • Yeenoghu had a mansion the size of a city that rolled across barren salt flats, pulled by slaves driven by gnolls.
  • Zuggtmoy had several realms scattered throughout the layers, all echos of normal environments but bathed in a purplish light and being overtaken by fungus and fungoid creatures.
 

Geography

Cosmology

In the Great Wheel cosmology model, the Abyss was an Outer plane on the Great Wheel connected to the Astral plane, Pandemonium, Carceri, and the Outlands. Some estimated that the Abyss had 666 layers, while the Fraternity of Order claimed to have catalogued 679 layers. It was possible that the number of layers was infinite, but no one could be certain. The first layer, named Pazunia after the demon lord Pazuzu, was described as a barren, dusty place baking under a red sun, broken only by great iron fortresses, huge holes in the ground, and the river Styx. Some branches of the Styx flowed down the holes (which were conduits to the various layers) and some of these holes supplied water to the Styx in reverse waterfalls.   When the Great Wheel model was replaced by the World Tree cosmology model, the river Styx was renamed the River of Blood and it flowed through all the fiendish planes (except for the Supreme Throne and the Demonweb Pits) originating in the Abyss, passing through the Blood Rift—an unusual plane that connected the Abyss with the Nine Hells—bringing the demons even closer to their arch-enemies the devils, resulting in the Blood War. Cosmologists found evidence of portals between the Abyss and the Barrens of Doom and Despair, Clangor, the Demonweb Pits, and Hammergrim, with intermittent portals to Deep Caverns and Fated Depths. The Astral plane connected all of the fiendish planes to the Prime Material Plane, but not directly to each other.   After the Spellplague, Asmodeus consumed the essence of the fallen Azuth and ended the Blood War by casting the Abyss to the furthest depths of the Elemental Chaos. The World Axis cosmology described the ruined Abyss as a domain with ever-changing features and realms, where the demons waged futile wars over meaningless empires. Once again the river Styx flowed through the Nine Hells and the Abyss, but then emptied its pollution into the Astral Sea. Other than the Styx or braving the Elemental Chaos, the only known passages to the Abyss were found in the Demonweb Pits, the Dismal Caverns, and Nishrek.  

Layers

The number of layers in the Abyss was unknown and perhaps unknowable, with at least 679 having been catalogued but this article attempts to list them regardless of which cosmology model was in favor at the time of discovery. Each layer had its own characteristics, which were as varied as the demons themselves. All types of terrain, atmosphere, weather, gravity, and material composition were represented in the myriad layers. Some examples were:  
  • Air-dominant—zero gravity, no matter except air
  • Ash—blowing dunes of ashes
  • Battleground—Blood War or other
  • City—warrens and slums to citadels and palaces, teeming with demons
  • Earth-dominant—solid rock tunneled by the inhabitants
  • Fire-dominant—everburning flames with salamanders, etc.
  • Delusion—appears to be Normal but the flowers are poisonous or the trees attack
  • Desert—endless tracts of black, white, or red sand with no water
  • Glacier—infinite black, white, or orange ice with few rocky peaks breaking the surface
  • Hellscape—a burning mix of magma, rock, and belching brimstone
  • Maelstrom—swirling, bubbling chaos like Limbo
  • Mountainous—rocky crags, precipitous cliffs, soaring peaks
  • Negative-dominant—major or minor
  • Normal—similar to a Prime plane with various flora and fauna
  • Ocean—a trackless ocean, with a surface
  • Salt—crystalline badlands or desert
  • Sea—of acid, blood, garbage, insects, oil, or worms, etc.
  • Swamp—noisome bog inhabited by predators
  • Undead—specters, spooks, and ghosts
  • Volcanic—lava flows, earthquakes, volcanoes, and smoke
  • Water-dominant—nightmarish creatures in the murk

List of all known layers of the Abyss Below is a list of all the known layers of the Abyss though many are missing and there is disagreement over the numbering of planes and even how many there are, despite the fact that all 666 layers have not yet been documented, some claim there are more layers and even an infinite number of layers:  
  • 1st: Plain of Infinite Portals – The plane of infinite portals is the 1st layer of the Abyss and thankfully, a survivable one, though that’s only so far as the environment is concerned! The air is breathable and the climate is survivable, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t dangers in this plane. Fortresses dot the land, housing powerful demon lords and their faithful servants. It’s in these fortresses that the demon lords will leave their bodies protected while their spirits traverse other lands, corrupting mortals and spreading their evil. The main mark of this layer though is that it has many portals that lead through to other layers of the Abyss. These portals appear as pits, but are rarely marked so finding the right one is often just guess work. Usually, these portals lead to higher layers of the Abyss, though sometimes, they open into lower layers too, although, usually this is a sign that something has gone wrong. Perhaps a demon has found a way to reach the mortal plane or a summoner has forgotten to close their own portal, but accidental portals to lower planes tends to be bad news.

  • 4th: The Grand Abyss
  • 5th: Wormblood
  • 6th: Realm of a Million Eyes – The 6th layer of the Abyss is ruled over by the Great Mother who is the primary deity of the beholder pantheon. The entire layer is a twisting maze of corridors and tunnels through which the eyes of the Great Mother peer, protruding from the walls. Within the winding tunnels of this layer lurk all types of beholders. beholders are extremely aggressive and territorial and these beholders all constantly war against one another.
  • 7th: The Phantom Plane

  • 13th: Blood Tor – Blood Tor is a vast ocean of red water, with an appearance much like blood. Those who enter this layer report having bad luck inflicted upon them (though that might be said of any that wander into the Abyss). Blood Tor is also the realm of 2 deities; Umberlee, the Bitch Queen and goddesses of seas and storms and Beshaba, the Maid of Misfortune.

  • 32nd: Sholo-Tovoth: The Fields of Consumption
  • 45th-47th: Azzagrat – Azzagrat is made up of 3 Abyssal layers; Rauwend, Shadowsky and Voorz’zt. These 3 layers make up of the realm of the Demon Lord Graz’zt, a place from which obscure magical knowledge can be discovered (if one survives long enough to find it).
  • 48th: Skeiqulac: The Ocean of Tears
  • 49th: Shaddonon
  • 52nd: Vorganund
  • 53rd: Phage Breeding Grounds
  • 57th: Torturous Truth
  • 65th: Court of the Spider Queen
  • 66th: The Demonweb Pits – The Demonweb Pits are the home of Lolth, the Spider Queen and goddess of the Drow. The layer is characterised by vast networks of webs which hold buildings and structures in their grasp, suspending them in the air. Portals created within the web network would also draw in random objects from the mortal plane that can be found in this layer. Lolth’s dungeons can be found deep within the web network and even further beneath these lie the bottomless pits where Lolth herself dwells. Lolth also rules over the 65th layer of the Abyss known as the Court of the Spider Queen.
  • 67th: The Heaving Hills
  • 68th: The Swallowed Void
  • 69th: Gibbering Hollow
  • 70th: The Ice Floe
  • 71st: Spirac
  • 72nd: Darklight
  • 73rd: The Wells of Darkness
  • 74th: Smaragd
  • 77th: The Gates of Heaven
  • 79th: The Emessu Tunnels
  • 81st: Blood Shallows
  • 88th: Gaping Maw – The Gaping Maw is the realm of Demogorgon, the Prince of Demons himself. It’s a vast continent surrounded by an endless ocean. Within this layer are the Screaming Jungle, inhabited by lizardfolk, yuan-ti, donsaurs and barlguras. The oceans are home to terrifying, aquatic creatures such as aboleths, krakens and ixitxachiti. Demogorgon’s lair can be found on the continent in a palace called Abysm. Abysm has 2 serpentine towers topped with skull minarets that reach deep into the ground, reaching networks of caverns that enter into the Shadowsea, the next layer of the Abyss.
  • 89th: The Shadowsea – The layer directly below the Gaping Maw is known as the Shadowsea and is the realm of the obyrith Dagon who is the Prince of the Darkened Depths. Dagon rules this watery realm in the amorphous palace inhabited by giant sea worms.
  • 90th: The Guttering Grove
  • 92nd: Ulgurshek
  • 100th: The Barrens
  • 111th: The Mind of Evil
  • 113th: Thanatos – Thanatos is the layer ruled by the Demon Lord Orcus who is not only a competitor for title of Prince of Demons, but is also a master of undeath and magic. Thanatos takes on much of the personality of Orcus with its black forests, desolate ruins and foreboding tombs. It’s also infested with undead legions that form much of Orcus’ army. Orcus rules Thanatos from Everlost Palace, a castle built of obsidian and bone set in a huge wasteland known as Oblivion’s End. For a few centuries, Orcus had been dethroned from Thanatos by the drow goddess, Kiaransalee, but Orcus was able to return and defeat her, sending her fleeing to the Demonweb.

  • 176th: Hollow’s Heart – Hollow’s Heart is the realm of the Demon Lord Fraz-Urb’luu who is amaster of deception and illusions. Following Fraz-Urb’luu’s imprisonment on Oerth for 2 centuries, Hollow’s Heart became destabilised into a flat land of nothingness. It has taken him many centuries to rebuild the portion of the layer that he has already (which is the size of a large continent). This means though, that most of this layer remains featureless. At the centre of the layer though, is the lair of Fraz-Urb’luu; the city of Zoragmelok. It is a walled city of adamantine built in with architecture that would seem impossible.

  • 193rd: Vulgarea
  • 222nd: Shedaklah – Shedaklah is the realm of the Demon Lords Juiblex, the Prince of Slimes, and Zuggtmoy, the Queen of Fungi. Shedaklah is also known as the Slime Pits and is a putrid, swampy realm, covered in a murky, brown sky and prone to torrential rains of filth. Here, poisonous vapors are emitted from fissures in the ground making the land a perfect breeding ground for oozes, molds and slimes of all varieties.
  • 223rd: Offalmound
  • 230th: The Dreaming Gulf
  • 241st: Palpitatia
  • 245th: The Scalding Sea
  • 248th: The Hidden Layer
  • 274th: Durao

  • 422nd: Death Dells – The Death Dells is the domain of Yeenoghu, a savage, jackal-headed demon lord and the creator of gnolls. His realm is a barren place of hills and ravines and few signs of civilisation other than the roving bands of gnolls, ghouls and hyenas that make their home here. This landscape constitutes what is for Yeenoghu and his minions, an endless hunting ground for them to prey on hapless victims.
  • 452nd: Ahriman-abad
  • 471st: Androlynne – Androlynne is the realm of an obyrith known as Pale Night who is also known as the Mother of Demons. It is here in this realm that she captured and imprisoned an army of eladrin to torture and kill at her pleasure. However, many creatures of virtue came to the rescue of the eladrin and protect them from Pale Night. Because of this, Androlynne became a place mixed with the influence of both Pale Night and these good creatures. While it is an alien looking land of purple skies and unusual plants, it is also beautiful with lush vegetation and wondrous looking creatures.
  • 480th: Guttlevetch
  • 487th: Lair of the Beast and Mansion of the Rake
  • 489th: Noisome Vale
  • 493rd: The Steeping Isle
  • 499th: Carroristo
  • 503rd: Torremor – Torremor is a realm characterised by its broken masonry and structures that hang suspended in the air by ropes and beams in the cavernous layer. These parts of buildings form the structure of Torremor. It was also once the realm of the demon lord Pazuzu who imprisoned Lamashtu, the Demon Queen of Monstrous Births, here. Lamashtu, however, was able to plot and scheme her escape, and despite being impaled by the building that was her prison, she was able to take control of the realm and rules it to this day.
  • 507th: Occipitus – Occipitus was once a part of Mount Celestia, but it was invaded by the demon forces led by the fallen planetar, Adimarchus, a mad demon lord with a thirst for revenge. Rather than allow more of Celestia become corrupted by the demon forces, the angels of Celestia detached a portion of the plane and cast it into the Abyss where it merged with Occipitus. Here, Adimarchus ruled until he was imprisoned by Graz’zt. The portion of Occipitus that came from Celestia remains infused with the power of Celestials and is considered cursed land by the demons and fiends of the Abyss and few stray there. In fact, since Adimarchus was imprisoned, the realm has been left mostly uninhabited.

  • 570th: Shendilavri – Shendilavri is home to many succubi and is ruled by Malcanthet, the Queen of the Succubi. The realm was once a mass of living flesh, but has since been shaped into a place of luscious beauty by Malcanthet. It has grassy hills, sandy beaches and is constantly lit by a beautiful sunset. Cities of white buildings have are scattered throughout the land with Rivenheart, the realms capital, also being Malcanthet’s seat of power. Here, it is said, all possible pleasures and desires can be obtained to tempt visitors into relaxing and letting down their guard. Malcanthet is protected here by her own, personal guard, the Radiant Sisters who protect her from potential threats.
  • 586th: Prison of the Mad God – This layer has little physical presence but is instead a vortex of wind and rock. It was once the realm of the demigod Diinkarazan, but since he was cursed with insanity, he has been imprisoned here by Ilsensine, a powerful elder brain and deity of the illithid.
  • 597th: Goranthis
  • 600th: Endless Maze – The Demon Lord, Baphomet, rules the Endless Maze. It’s an infinite and ever changing labyrinth filled with terrifying creatures including minotaurs, ogres and goristros. Pale night, the Obyrith demon lord also rules a portion of the Endless Maze from her Bone Castle.
  • 601st: Conflagratum
  • 628th: Vallashan
  • 643rd: Caverns of the Skull
  • 651st: Nethuria
  • 652nd: The Rift of Corrosion
  • 663rd: Zionyn
  • 665th: The Void – The final known layer of the Abyss is known simply as the Void. Those that enter here find themselves falling eternally, either dying, eventually, of dehydration, or from the wicked winds that are powerful enough to flay the very skin from your bones. Much magic is dampened here too meaning that spells that might be useful in such circumstances, are ineffective in the Void; these include spells like levitate and feather fall. Although some portals do lead into the Void, no portals lead out of it.
 
 
  Despite its name and notoriety for being never-ending, it was not known whether the layers of the Abyss were truly infinite in number. Part of the reason for this was that some places might have been so absolutely inhospitable that none, not mortal, nor god, nor demon lords themselves could survive (the deeper layers reportedly having been even worse in the past), and hence were not known about.   While the hundreds of layers of the Abyss might seem to utterly eclipse all other Outer planes put together, this figure was misleading. Besides the issue of uninhabitability, layers and divine realms, the personal territories of powers, were often one in the same in the Abyss, whereas other planes often had several realms on one layer. Exacerbating the problem, and another reason why the Abyssal layers could not be properly counted, was that the number was always in a state of flux.   In the very depths of the Abyss, the heart of the plane was constantly cleaving through the primal foundations of the cosmos, as it had since before the dawn of mortals, spawning new layers. Arguably worse, if a demonic invasion was allowed to fester, entire worlds could fall into the Abyss, becoming the basis of new layers and realms. Conversely, the Abyss was also capable of losing layers. The individual layers of the Abyss had primal urges and a constant need for nourishment, shrinking and weakened until nothing was left if not fed. Alternatively, they might be absorbed by other layers, only able to escape this state by acquiring sufficient sustenance. Occassionally the battling of demons over control of a layer could become so cataclysmic that the entire realm was outright obliterated.   Layers could also be intentionally removed, such as when Lolth expended much of her divine energy seperating the Demonweb Pits, or when a pantheon of offended deities ripped out and condensed a demon lord's entire layer (with him still in it) and cast it into the Astral plane. Despite this ending in the Abyss, much like a hungry, rudely awakened beast, almost instantly striking down the entire pantheon in that case, the attack itself was successful, leaving nothing but a void and their own decomposing divine corpses.

    It was also a possibility that destroyed layers were capable of being reborn elsewhere in the Abyss, although this was not a certainty. This was ignoring the fact that layers were shaped by the conscious manipulations and subconscious wills of its resident demon lord, and so even the nature of a single layer could become obsolete by the time such information was established.  

Ecosystem Cycles


Afterlife

Beliefs about the journey of souls to the afterlife changed with the shifting cosmologies and the crystal sphere in which one resided. In some worlds, chaotic evil souls would travel directly to the Abyss and become manes, the lowest form of sub-demon. Manes were treated as slaves, cannon fodder, and food by the demon lords. For mortals of Realmspace, however, all souls would first go to the Fugue Plane and await transport to their final resting place. Greedy demon lords would open a portal to the Fugue Plane and conduct raids to steal souls and bring them back to the Abyss to become manes. After the Spellplague, Shar reshaped the Plane of Shadow and folded in what death energy did not get absorbed into the Elemental Chaos and created the Shadowfell. After that, souls on their way to the afterlife started their journey in the Shadowfell and most made it to the Fugue Plane to await judgment, but a few remained behind or were lost.   Afterlife article on FR WIki

Fauna & Flora

Inhabitants

There were myriad types of demons, too numerous to catalog here, but including the tanar'ri, obyriths, and loumaras. Non-demonic life could be found in the Abyss as well, with both mortal explorers and captives and the petitioners brought there after death. Many wicked deities also based themselves here.
