The Nullifiers
The Nullifiers began as a core group of six students taught directly by Qaniva Linaren, the Dagger, a renowned expert in abjuration magic and sword-fighting, whose signature style had bought her much fame among The Hahgi during the early years of Abahk Stuz. Her original intention was simply to tap the potential of the Hahgi people and grant them an outlet for their latent magical abilities. However, under her leadership they would prove instrumental in many battles and operations for the Hahgiahk government in Kannera, most famously playing a vital role in The Freeing of Minera in 395 IF. Over the subsequent years, the group would pick up many more recruits. Today, the Nullifiers' name is used by a mercenary company led by one of their founding members, Stoog Favwid, while other early members continue to serve Qaniva in the Black Eagles. Yet, its legend remains most closely tied to the rise and fall of the Hahgiahk state.
The original six have firmly entered into the annals of history: Ladrik Benavak and Stoog Fivwid, both considered as masterful as Qaniva herself in her own signature style; Bakid Jaf and Gart Monjin, who earned themselves reputations as sages and arcane masters; Ziija Brak who became a hero to her homeland, Volodaria, in her own struggles against the Raducci's; and not least Dubah Gaz, considered the greatest of them all before her tragic death in the later fall of Minera.
After their role in the freeing of Minera, the group began to splinter. Bakid Jaf was first to leave, moving to Kannera where he founded a College and began in earnest to teach the people of Kanik as much as he could. He remains there to this day, and is generally well regarded by all but the Circle of the Vine, who cannot abide a college outside of their purview. Next was Ziija, who returned to her homeland in Volodaria, believing her ancestral homeland in Kanik to be safe at last. She would remain there for many years, fighting alongside The Reclaimers against poachers and bandits hired by House Raducci to force the Aeldrin from their lands, marking her as public enemy number one for Imperial authorities in the region.
The remaining members of the Nullifiers served the Hahgiahk on many occasions, protecting several of its leaders from assassination attempts employed by the remnants of the Lucrenian government in Lucria and Thrane. They continued to serve under Qaniva right up until the Hahgiahk government collapsed and the Empire returned to the Kanik peninsula. Gart Monjin abandoned the group at this point, serving his people instead as a diplomat and eventually as the mayor of Kannera. He remains a key figure in current movements to establish better rights and powers for the Hahgi people, including in Lijrin Ghain's campaign in Lucria.
Qaniva led the remainder north, to join with Captain Debad Sliz in The Mines of Minera, where they were instrumental in keeping the gold mines out of Minter hands. The settlement remained independent for eleven months after the Hahgiahk collapsed, until a large Redcloak army backed by a dozen Circle mages finally broke through their defences. While the majority of Sliz' men escaped with their lives, this was only thanks to Dubah Gaz' sacrifice. She held the mountain pass north of Minera for half a day, standing alone against the enemy forces, before at last succumbing.
With Dubah's death, Ladrik grew despondent. He left just a week later, returning to his home within The Broken Spires where he has remained since. Stoog had also grown jaded, believing the cause dead. He left the the group and founded his own company who he trained in Qaniva's art. Three years later, the Nullifiers are now known across the Empire as mercenaries who specialise in killing rogue mages.
The originator of the Nullifiers, Qaniva, had seen the group grow from nothing, and now saw it splintered. While none of the original six remained, a few newer students stayed loyal to Qaniva, and under her leadership they became the magical corps of the Black Eagles. While the Nullifiers have changed much over the intervening decades, their past exploits have granted them a well deserved place in history.
