The Broken Spires

The Broken Spires are a mountain range just west of the city of Lucria, in the region of Lucrenia. They border both the Sea of Toys in the north and the Marin Gulf in the south. The Spires effectively cut off the Kanik peninsula from the Thranish peninsula and the rest of mainland Aelderin, which for many years allowed the inhabitants of Kanik - the Hahgi and the Kanik Gnomes - to live in isolation from the other races of Aelderin. They served as a major obstacle to the Empire of Nara Tok during the course of the Goblin Crusades, and later during Abahk Stuz.   What little scraps that remain of the Hahgi religion indicate the mountains as theologically significant. A series of myths detail their creation, by the great dragon Kral (generally accepted to be analogous to Khain , the Unwanted), in a moment of uncharacteristic compassion. The myths take place during the Warring Times, and detail a god-led army chasing the forefathers of the Hahgi across the Yethis desert and onwards, into Kanik, when Kral at last acted, sealing them off from their pursuers. The myth also explains the origin of the Shattered Coast - yet another layer of protection placed by their god to protect them from the men of the north.   Few creatures make the Broken Spires their home, other than mountain goats and the occasional bear or mountain lion. Unlike many other mountain ranges in Aelderin, no dragon makes its lair among the Spires, leaving only the orkhs to rule the peaks.   The orkhs of the Broken Spires are a strange people, even to their fellow Hahgi. Prone to violence and highly isolationist, the orcs brook no strangers in their lands. Little is known of their customs, what little there is prised from the tales of the rock gnomes of Nek Tharad, the Workshop and the account of Fragg Blaethwyn, but it is generally accepted that the orkhs, like the bugbirh of the eastern Bukwit, have preserved the Kanik pantheon. Each tribe has its own patron god, or Vatikh, most of which bare similarities to the evil deities of Zakhrim. The orcs make for exceptionally poor neighbours, with tribes often forming raiding partners to loot unprotected villages, both east and west of the mountains.   The Spires are also believed to feature entrances to the Fhaidorca, occasional Fhaidorcan terrors finding their way out of the depths and into civilised lands. With none but the orkhs to guard these entrances, towns bordering the Spires must beware of these subterranean threats.
