Black Eagles

Lucrenia has always been the most discontent of the Imperial provinces. The last to officially be annexed (excluding Exilia), its history has no shortage of blood and strife. The territory was integrated after the Goblin Crusades which decimated a large portion of The Hahgi population, and resulted in the forceful occupation of the Kanik Peninsula, the land west of The Broken Spires.   Years of rebellion and separatism culminated in the secession of the Hahgiahk in the year 393IF, during the Thaerseimai when Sundemar rose to dominance in the northern Imperial territories. The Hahgiahk was a state ruled by leaders among the Hahgi themselves, who claimed to govern all of the Kanik peninsula from their capital in the city of Kannera. This state was doomed to fall, however, thanks in part to poor government, but also to the success of the Vengeance Campaign, and the subsequent re-consolidation of Imperial authority in the south, as conducted by General Vraidan Ffandor before his assassination.   The Kanneran government may have fallen, but its legacy lives on. In the aftermath of the Thaerseimai, or Abahk Stuz as it is more commonly known in the Kanik Peninsula, the Empire remains much less centralised than it once was. Many thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed in the north, during the Vengeance Campaign and the Sundemari-Aoleirian Wars, leaving the Imperial armies thinly stretched across the Empire. In the Kanik Peninsula, far away from the capital and the Imperial heartlands, this has allowed many small bands of brigands and rogues to roam relatively freely. Most of these are simple opportunists and criminals, yet some select few hail back to the time of Abahk Stuz. These few garner a following based on their past heroics, and as a result are primary targets for Imperial forces in the area: the Redcloaks; and also mercenary forces controlled by the Minters.   Most famous of these are the Black Eagles, a group of a hundred or so resistance fighters, many of whom were involved in the legendary Freeing of Minera. They continue to be mostly active in and around The Mines of Minera, harassing Minter patrols and ambushing their supply caravans. Perhaps most famously, they successfully defended the town of Minera from Minter and Imperial forces for 11 months after the collapse of the Hahgiahk, with the aid of several members of The Nullifiers. Their name pays tribute to one of their fallen, the Nullifier Dubah Gaz, who sacrificed herself to give them time to escape. Gaz was known to wear an eagle pendant around her neck, a symbol of freedom among fijjighoblin spiritualists, rendered black in mourning for her loss. They operate from a hidden base deep within the Broken Spires, evading detection thanks to the aid of local orkhish tribes, who owe Sliz a blood-debt.   The ranks of the Black Eagles are filled with heroes from Abahk Stuz. Their leader, Captain Debad Sliz was once a Redcloak captain, but was forged into a rebel hero by the Hahgiahk. He earned himself and his company many victories against much larger forces using guerilla tactics and mobile scouting patrols. He was the mastermind of the Freeing of Minera and the main face fuelling the Black Eagle's recruitment efforts. Under his leadership, the Black Eagles have yet to lose any significant battle.   His second in command has developed just as grand a reputation. A Volodarin known to most as the Dagger, her command of abjuration magic and mastery of the sword has granted her a place in legend. It was she who coordinated the first rebellion in the town of Haven which was the spark that lit the fires of rebellion all across the Kanik Peninsula. It was she who later founded the Nullifiers, who were key in Sliz' success in freeing Minera from the Minters influence. Considered one of the most dangerous warriors in Lucrenia, the Dagger is aptly named, for she is the dagger to Sliz' cloak.   Many other heroes and villains decorate the roster of the Black Eagles, from Anatara Belk, the finest crossbowman in Kanik, to Thragrin Grimd, the prince of the orkhs. Their names are heard most in Lucrenian taverns, in hushed and reverent whispers among the poor and the downbeaten; yet, even in distant Cyrin, tales of the Black Eagles are told. For the revolutionaries of Lucrenia, the Black Eagles are a torch of defiance thrust in the face of Imperial loyalists.
