Captain Debad Sliz

Captain Debad Sliz first earned merit through his service in the Redcloaks, performing admirably as a patrolman in and around the Kanik and Thranish peninsulas between 387 IF and 391 IF. He was one of the few Hahgi servicemen to be promoted to Captain during The Empire's Golden Age, thanks mostly to his grasp of tactics and organisation, as well as the respect he had earned among his men. From 391 IF until 393 IF, he was stationed in a small town a little ways north of Haven, in the shadow of The Broken Spires. During this period he developed close relationships with the local Hahgi townsmen. In 393 IF, after the Dagger's successful operation in Haven and the beginning of Abahk Stuz, Sliz found himself in the midst of a moral dilemma - to betray his superiors in the Empire, or betray the townsfolk he had protected for the last two years, his own countrymen. His companions report that he spent a full night wandering the mountains before returning the next morning, uniform and badge abandoned. From then on, Sliz would be a loyal soldier of the rebellion.   For the next few months, Sliz would lead men in several pitched battles against loyalist soldiers, especially around the area of Haven, as the Exarch in Lucria sought to return the peninsula to his governance. His competence well established, in the autumn of 393 IF, Sliz was called to Kannera, where the burgeoning Hahgiahk leadership needed his military prowess. Qaniva Linaren played a small role in convincing Sliz that the Kanneran government deserved his sword, and Sliz continued to serve them in the region around Haven for another year.   In 394 IF, landings on the Peninsula had come to an end as Lucrenian manpower had begun to run dry. Sliz was offered an easy post in the capital itself, keeping order among the growing Hahgi population there, but refused this position. Sliz had set his eyes on a different cause. In the north the Minters had managed to maintain control of The Mines of Minera, as well as the large population of indentured Hahgi workers that served as their miners. This was the last remnant of the Imperial yoke, and Sliz set out to remove it. After just a few weeks of recruitment in Haven, Sliz set off , establishing a base in the mountains north of Minera.   From here, Sliz embarked on his legendary campaign - The Freeing of Minera. Many historians, bards and drunkards have covered the story in extraordinary and sometimes fantastical detail, but for these records it suffices to say that through wit, knowledge of local terrain and the magical prowess of the Dagger and her Nullifiers, Sliz successfully destroyed the sizable Minters garrison made up of Jarnish Mercenaries and a small cadre of Circle mages.   While this would have been more than enough to secure Sliz' place in legend, the hobghoblin captain could not rest on his laurels. With the Kanik Peninsula finally freed from foreign influence, Sliz turned his attention to the task of keeping it that way. He was instrumental in foiling several operations planned by the Lucrenian government, from attacks through the Broken Spires to assassination attempts against leaders of the Hahgiahk government. Over the course of the next decade, Sliz would fuel the stories of his people, becoming one of the first heroes of the newly unified Hahgi.   The Hahgiahk government, never as strong as it sought to be, was close to collapsing by 404 IF, when news of the Vengeance Campaign's success arrived on the peninsula. As Emperor Aivo turned his attention to the consolidation of his territories, many of the disparate Hahgi peoples began to fold to Imperial pressure. In the early months of 405 IF, the Kanneran government succumbed to pressure and moved to re-join the Empire. Yet Sliz, as well as a band of his men, remained steadfast. Sliz retreated north to the town of Minera, the site of his greatest military victory, where he was joined by the Dagger and her Nullifiers. Together, they held the town from the Empire of Nara Tok and the Minters for eleven months after the dissolution of the Hahgiahk, before finally being forced to flee into the mountains in the face of overwhelming numbers.   In the three years that have passed since then, Sliz has taken command of the Black Eagles, a group made up of a select few ex-members of the Nullifiers and Sliz' own loyal soldiers, most from the days of Abahk Stuz. He continues to harry and harass the Minters caravans and troops in the area, leading several raids against Imperial garrisons as well, in the name of Hahgi autonomy. His tales have grown popular all over his homeland, and beyond, even travelling as far east as Cyrin.
