Origins of Magical Locations on Derkomai

Magic on Derkomai is a manifestation of emotion. The powerful emotions of past events lead to some locations in the world being permeated by magic. At those places, echoes of the powerful emotions of those events remain; they distort and warp foundational structures of the world and seep deep into the rock, land, water, air, and life. In such areas, magic is more easily created and sometimes erupts spontaneously, leading to supernatural events and effects in places that would otherwise be mundane.   Places where great battles were fought, betrayals and injustices were perpetrated, and horrific murders and slaughters took place are steeped in hatred, anger, fear, sadness, and other dark emotions. In such places, where victims lie in rest, the dead strive to rise, seeking justice forever denied. Specters, ghosts, and other undead gather to visit vengeance on the living. Malevolent Faerim and even Hagirim may dwell, waiting for victims of their trickery. The air may feel cold, even on warm days, strange fogs, mists, and miasmas arise, and the screeches, moans, and wailing of undead spirits may be heard. Flora is often stunted and deformed, poisonous wildlife and plant life abounds, and stinging and biting insects and hostile animals gather.   Places of great beauty, where great acts of selflessness, healing, and love occurred, on the other hand, are blessed by the joy and happiness brought about by those acts. At those places, beautiful and medicinal plants grow, springs flow with healing and soothing waters, and Okkurim protectors, like Naiadrim, Dryadrim, and some Faerim may be found. The air and water may seem clearer, fresher, and purer than usual, and the sun warmer and brighter. Beautiful evergreen and flowering trees grow, some to amazing heights. Butterflies, honeybees, and other beneficial life abounds, and the animals are delightful and fearless, even friendly.   The powerful emotions and magic attached to a place draw creatures and plant life sympathetic to those emotions. They in turn further influence the place, increasing its connection to the emptiness of The Void or to the sanctity of The Elysium. At the extremes, such places become either utterly corrupted, dwelling places of the most evil Daemorim beings of the world, or entirely holy, home to the most benevolent of Eia’au's creation.   The presence of supernatural beings at a place over time also can create strong connections to The Void or to The Elysium and therefore, infuse it with and make it susceptible to magic. The dwelling places of Okkurim and the surrounding areas are such places. Even a passing visit by a Balim, Shisharrim, Shibaorim or Daemorim leaves echoes of its presence. The echoes of those powerful beings can permeate an area with magic sympathetic to the beings that were there.   In places where supernatural beings clashed, the underlying fabric of the world is roiled by their emotions and power, leaving it unsettled and unpredictable. The everyday workings of nature may fail at one minute, then be restored the next. Sudden wind and rainstorms arise, only to yield to sunny, calm skies after just minutes, and moments later, dank fogs and mists saturate the air. Lightning and thunder slash the skies, and violent rain may fall where there are no clouds. The land is rent by earthquakes, geysers erupt, and lava may flow from volcanic vents spewing poisonous gases. At such locations, magic is just as unpredictable as the weather and landscape, with spells cast by even the most powerful Magi giving wildly unexpected results, even trauma or death.   Places impacted by the emotions of past events or by the presence of powerful supernatural beings are by no means unknown in the world, but fortunately, locales deeply distorted are very few and usually easily avoided.

Thank you! I tried to develop rational reasons for magical locations, which might seem like a non-sequitur, but I like things to "make sense." Maybe a little too much, haha. Blessings on your plans for 2024 as well!
