Naiadrim Species in Derkomai | World Anvil

Naiadrim

Naiadrim are a subspecies of Okkurim. They are protectors of natural fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of fresh water. They are also known as Xanarim in some places. Naiadrim inhabit especially beautiful water features, where the water is fresh and clean. They typically avoid and hate dirty or polluted water.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Naiadrim are shape shifters. They are capable of blending into the waters that they are protecting, invisible to Human eyes; though, it is said that Elvirim are able to sense them even in their watery form. When they choose to, they can also appear as humanoid; typically, they appear to humans as very beautiful and voluptuous young women, without clothes, having pale, silvery blue skin, silver hair, and fine features.

Growth Rate & Stages

Naiadrim are immortal beings, so they do not reproduce or grow in the physical realm.

Ecology and Habitats

Naiadrim dwell in and are in some sense part of beautiful springs, brooks, streams, pools, waterfalls, and fountains throughout Derkomai. They only dwell in fresh, natural, clear waters free from pollutants. Usually, these places are away from places populated by Human, Dwarvirim, and Orkrim. They sometimes dwell near Elvirim habitations.

Behaviour

Naiadrim are protectors of the clear, fresh waters of Derkomai and, along with other species of Okkurim, have assisted Valamarashe with enforcing the strictures imposed on Human peoples on Derlomai since their arrival.   Naiadrim can be mischievous, and sometimes will beguile humans they find attractive. There are myths and legends of naiadrim and humans falling in love, usually leading to a tragic end.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

In humanoid form, they have very beautiful faces, perfectly symmetrical, with large, blue eyes, long, thick silver hair, a small straight nose, and full, rose-colored lips.

Average Intelligence

Whether or not Naiadrim have intelligence, as it is typically understood, is debatable. They do not share the goals or desires of humans. They do not create nor reproduce. They were not born, nor do they die. They exist to love and protect their waters. They deeply understand threats to their waters, and can formulate plans and strategies using their abilities to protect them. They are also highly empathic and deeply feel the emotions of living things near them, including humans. They can converse with people, and will when they choose to. The stories about them say that conversing with a naiadrim usually leaves people feeling happy but confused, unable to formulate coherent thoughts, and desiring to do anything to please the naiadrim or make it/her happy.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Naiadrim are able to sense when their waters are being disturbed or damaged. They are able to manipulate the waters they protect at will, changing its flow, and even changing it to ice or steam as they command. They can also sense the thoughts and emotions of animal life living in their waters and to some extent, direct the actions of those animals and fish that are living in their waters.   Naiadrim are also able to beguile most humans, enchanting them with their beauty and empathic abilities. Few people are able to resist the charms of a naiadrim; though again, it is said that Elvirim usually can. Those beguiled by a naiadrim are completely under the naiadrim's power and will do whatever it/she tells them to do. However, if the naiadrim directs actions completely out of character, the beguilement may be broken.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

There are myths and legends of naiadrim falling in love with humans, even producing offspring; however, there is probably little truth to them. Most of the legends have a bad ending for the human lover of a naiadrim.
