Hakabanda

Hakabanda (Red Flag) is the secret port abd base of Hsing Jenlee's Red Flag Fleet. It is located at the western edge of Myria Sashi (the Impassable Jungle) on a small river to the northwest of Xosashimuro, a small village in the northwestern part of the jungle.

Demographics

The inhabitants of Hakabanda are the pirates and supporters of The Red Flag Fleet, including shipwrights, blacksmiths, carpenters, sailmakers, and other supporters.

Government

Hakabanda is run by Hsing Jenlee and the captains of the ships of The Red Flag Fleet. The captains are responsible for discipline of the crews of their ships, while Hsing Jenlee is in overall command of the fleet and of the people living in and around Hakabanda.

Defences

The central part of Hakabanda is surrounded by a stout wooden stockade with wooden watchtowers at the corners of the rectangular stockade. Archers and crossbowmen are stationed in the towers at all times. The walls are roughly 15 feet high, and the towers about 25 feet high, all constructed from logs about 18 inches in diameter. There is a single gate into the stockade on the north side, about 15 feet high, constructed of thick wooden planks. In addition, the pirates and other inhabitants of Hakabanda are well-armed, experienced fighters.

Industry & Trade

Hakabanda has little industry, other than that required to maintain and support the ships and crew of the Red Flag Fleet. The pirates and inhabitants of Hakabanda engage in trade with caravan merchants willing to overlook the source of the goods being traded. Bandits from the Korrada Hills and Korradamuro often bring goods and slaves they've taken from caravans and travelers to Hakabanda to trade with the pirates.

Infrastructure

Hakabanda has all of the facilities, amenities, and infrastructure of most small villages, including a blacksmith, tanner, cobbler, tailor, and other shops. There is a well-stocked tavern and eatery with a small inn, as well as small houses where the crew of the ships live with their families, as well as the other inhabitants of the village. Hsing Jenlee has a large three-storey mansion in the village. Rumors say that there are vaults full of treasure beneath her house, but that the vaults hold only a small portion of her entire treasure.

Guilds and Factions

There is some rivalry among the pirate crews of the ships of the Red Flag Fleet. Hsing Jenlee encourages a certain amount of competition between the crews as a means of keeping them motivated, as long as the competition doesn't result in outright violence and major schisms within the fleet. Crews and captains that go too far in their competetiveness are punished harshly.

History

Hakabanda was originally established by Jungbo Tai, the former husband of Hsing Jenlee and captain of The Red Flag Fleet. After Hsing Jenlee killed him and took over the pirate fleet, she expanded Hakabanda and made it her home and the permanent base of the fleet. Hakabanda was where Hsing Jenlee's flagship, the Little Duckling, was constructed. The success of the Red Flag Fleet has drawn followers, and now the pirate based has about 500 permanent residents besides the crews of the pirate ships. Given that the Red Flag fleet has so many ships now, the village cannot suppport all of them at once, so no more than about ten of the ships can make port there at any time.

Architecture

The stockade walls of Hakabanda are constructed of trees stripped of their bark, sawn to length, and set into the ground. Hsing Jenlee's mansion is constructed of handsawn lumber on a dressed stone foundation. Other buildings are of log contruction on a packed earth foundation. The buildings are constructed using designs and techniques similar to those used in southern Senyon.

Geography

Hakabanda lies on the western shores of a short, wide river the pirates have named the Red River that is on the western edge of The Impassable Jungle. Across the river, the bogs, marshes, swamps, forests of the jungle extend to the southeast for hundreds of miles. To the west, the land rises toward the plains, grasslands, and forests south of the Great Southern Range until it reaches the valley of East Border River, the border of Sudland. The central part of Hakabanda is constructed on higher, drier ground away from the docks on the river bank by about 200 yards.

Climate

The climate of Hakabanda and the surrounding areas is semi-tropical, warm and wet. Clouds pile up to the west of the Great Eastern Mountains and dump their moisture, making much of Senyon wet and rainy. In addition, the great rivers flowing into the estuaries and deltas of Myria Sashi bring with them fogs and mists that hang over wide areas to the east of Hakabanda most of the time. However, being south of the equator by several hundred miles moderates the temperatures, so though the climate is wet, temperatures are relatively moderate.

Natural Resources

The Red River at Hakabanda and the Black Dragon Sea to the south have plentiful fish, and they are a significant food source for Hakabanda and the Red Flag Fleet. The forests of The Impassable Jungle are abundant in trees; though venturing into the jungle to harvest them can be a dangerous task. Many types of medicinal plants grow in the jungles and swamps, and many creatures that provide valuable furs and substances make their homes there, but few in Hakabanda dare to gather them.
