She is tall, graceful, quick, and strong, and is a well-trained and proficient fighter. She has suffered some injuries during raids, but none crippling or debilitating.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Hsing Jenlee, or "Truth," was born to a low-ranking concubine of the former Emperor of Senyon, the father of Emperor Yixing-Jiumin Jinsen, making her, in fact, a half-sister of the current emperor, and her real name Yixing-Jiumin Jenlee; however, she disavowed that family name as soon as she left the imperial palace, calling herself Hsing (an alternate spelling of Xing) Jenlee.   Jenlee's mother was a beautiful, but low-ranking maid in Liliakinyosa, the imperial palace, that was "favored" by the emperor. When it was determined that she was pregnant as a result, she was elevated to be a concubine of the lowest rank and for a time, was looked after and rewarded by the emperor, drawing the jealousy of the concubines. However, after giving birth to a daughter, she was forgotten and left to fend for herself. Tormented by consorts and concubines, and even some higher-ranking maids, she died of illness when Jenlee was only 9 years old, leaving her young daughter alone to be raised by older maids and ignored or looked down on by the rest of the Imperial Family of the Great Sacred Empire.   When Jenlee was 15 years old and considered quite beautiful, the former emperor was approached by ambassadors of the chief of the Manyund tribes wanting to establish a trade alliance with Senyon. The Manyund chief proposed a marriage alliance, promising to send significant tribute of horses, gold, furs, and other valuables from the north of Derkomai if the emperor agreed to marry one of the imperial princesses to him. At that time, Senyon's treasury was depleted by wars with Da Azmi Grissyund Okku and Da Nis Grissyond Okku, as well as with Orkrim tribes, and from natural disasters that plagued southern Senyon, so he agreed. However, his Empress and concubines in the Imperial Consorts of the Great Sacred Empire vehemently objected to giving up any of their daughters to go to what they considered an uncivilized, barbarian country of the far north. And so Hsing Jenlee, having no one to back her, was chosen.   Jenlee was utterly unwilling to be sent to a country that she knew nothing about and married to a barbarian man she had never met. So, with the help of a eunuch she had befriended and bribed with nearly every piece of jewelry she owned, she hid herself in a dung cart that was leaving the imperial palace to be emptied. Her eunuch friend paid off the guards to get her safely out of the imperial palace, but that was where his supposed friendship ended. When the dung cart was opened, and Jenlee emerged, she was immediately seized by pimp slavers. Her eunuch "friend" had sold her into prostitution.   Once the slavers realized that they had been sold an imperial princess, they were terrified. They knew that they could not keep her in Sendoshi, nor could they just let her go or return her to the palace, as anyone caught kidnapping an imperial princess, even one the Imperial Family of the Great Sacred Empire cared little about, would die a horrible death. So through contacts, they quickly sold her to a pirate based near Sashiminto named Jungbo Tai. The imperial investigators didn't bother to look too hard for her. After a while, the emperor bought off the Manyund ambassadors with silk cloth and other valuables, and the matter was closed. One less disfavored princess was just one less nuisance for the Imperial Family, when it came right down to it.   Jungbo Tai wasn't exactly smart, but he was strong and tough, a brilliant fighter, knew plenty about ships and sailing, and had lots of contacts in the back alleys and black markets of Senyon. He was also a sucker for a pretty face. Hsing Jenlee soon had him utterly beguiled, and he taught her everything he knew about fighting, sailing a ship, and managing a gang of pirates and fleet of pirate ships. He introduced her to his underworld contacts and let her deal with selling stolen goods, buying necessities for the fleet, paying the crew, and even taking care of crew discipline. Jungbo loved her, so when she was 17, Hsing Jenlee married Jungbo Tai, and he promised her all he owned. When she was 18, she killed him.   Being considerably more attractive, better educated, and much smarter than Jungbo and most of his crew of riffraff pirates, Hsing Jenlee had little trouble taking control of his entire fleet of ships and expanding it. Opponents were soon eliminated, and the remaining captains of all of Jungbo Tais's ships swore absolute loyaly to Hsing Jenlee. After 10 years, she commanded a fleet of around 100 ships that she calls The Red Flag Fleet for the red flags bearing her mark that they fly. No one, not even the fleets of the Imperial Family of the Great Sacred Empire dares to cross her on the open seas. Her pirates raid towns along the coasts of the Black Dragon Sea from Rigosland to Koyon. When her flagship, the Little Duckling appears off their coast, most towns just pay tribute to her rather than risk being burned to the ground and townspeople killed. She bypasses larger cities and towns, like Southport, as taking on professional military and guards is beyond the capabilities of her pirates. Hsing Jenlee is well aware of that, after being taught harsh lessons about the differences between them during a couple of ill-conceived raids.

Education

Hsing Jenlee was brought up and educated by older maids and eunuchs in the imperial palace, so she is able to read and write and do arithmetic. She knows some history of Senyon, and she has expert knowledge of the seas and coasts around the Black Dragon Sea. Despite being a pirate, she is well versed in imperial etiquette.

Mental Trauma

Hsing Jenlee still suffers from losing her mother at a young age, as well as from being bullied during her childhood years in Liliakinyosa, then given away in a marriage alliance like a game piece. On top of that, being betrayed, sold into prostitution and then to a pirate have made her distrustful and full of anger.

Intellectual Characteristics

Jenlee is smart, streetwise, skeptical, and sarcastic. She easily flies into a rage when crossed or frustrated. She can also be kind and generous to those that she pities or likes.

Morality & Philosophy

After being betrayed and sold into prostitution by someone she considered one of her few friends, Hsing Jenlee hates betrayal and lies. She values loyalty, honesty, and truth above all else.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Hsing Jenlee is motivated by profit, but at least as much or more so by her hatred of the Imperial Family of the Great Sacred Empire and anger for all of the injustices she has suffered. She particularly loves pirating trade ships from Senyon. The crews of those ships usually come to a bad end, but she often leaves one crewmember alive. She drops that sailor off at some port town in Senyon with instructions to make sure that the Emperor knows what happened to his ship, cargo, and crew.

Hygiene

Being a former imperial princess, Hsing Jenlee is fastidious about hygiene. She baths and washes often, and brushes her hair daily. She changes her clothes every day. She hates being dirty and wearing dirty clothes. Her clothes, although suitable for rough conditions onboard ships, are of the highest quality.

Social

Contacts & Relations

She maintains contact with Dorrie Lightfoot Paine in Southport, sometimes fencing stolen good through her. Paine provides Hsing Jenlee with intelligence about trade ships and what is happening in and around Southport.

Speech

Hsing Jenlee speaks a dialect of Sudkou spoken in Sendoshi with the accent and affectations of imperial princesses, utterly unlike that of the riffraff pirates that she leads. However, her speech is liberally salted with curses that would shock any imperial princess.

Wealth & Financial state

Hsing Jenlee is very, very wealthy. Besides the fleet of around 100 ships she has acquired, her raids of towns and villages and pirating of ships on the Black Dragon Sea has amassed her a considerable fortune. She wears the highest quality clothing that money can buy, including some silks as fine as those worn by the Imperial Consorts of the Great Sacred Empire, and jewelry of equally high quality. Many people would like to know where she keeps the rest of the treasure she has gathered.
