Vampire Ground Hawk
The vampire ground hawk is a native species to the Torched Emberlands. They are highly intelligent birds that have managed to find a sustainable source of food to help them survive the smothering heat. Occasionally, the vampire hawk will be found drinking blood from the roots of the red leatherleaf trees. The blood from these trees contain small parasites that the vampire hawks help clean from the trees. The hawks also feed on eggs and lava iguanas.
Geographic Distribution
They are only known to be in hot climates, such as wastelands and volcanic regions. Although, some exotic breeders will pay extremely handsome fees for hunters to go out and bring back a few of these birds. This is frowned upon and the very reason the vampire ground hawks are on the vulnerable species list.Migration & Reproduction
During the season of raincall, the vampire hawk can be found on the northern part of the Torched Emberlands where the largest quantity of red leatherleaf trees are. At this time, the hawk looks for a suitable mate to build a nest of lava rocks with and then breed. They birth between three and eight eggs per breeding season, with only 25 percent of them surviving to adulthood due to natural complications. The eggs take about one month to hatch, with the parents alternating between keeping the eggs warm while the other parent goes out to hunt. When the eggs hatch, the parents will bring back food to be regurgitated into their hatchling's mouths. As early as six weeks of age, the hatchling, now a fledgling, will start to leave the nest and begin the learn the patterns of flight. When auburnspell hits, the vampire hawk flies to the southside of the Torched Emberlands, where it spends its time hunting and scavanging during the harsh season. Half of them don't return to the north side of the Emberlands when raincall comes around again.Table of Contents
