Ish'Mael

Personal History

Ish'Mael was raised by his human mother, Lucinda, as a half-elven bastard child.  Their life was simple one in their small fishing village of Vaelnova, but it was a happy one. Though the life in a single-parent home is always rough, the community helped raise him, making those early years of his life some of the best he had.   Like all born of greater destiny, Ish'Mael had a heavy shadow cast on him.  His father, a crewman to the dread pirate and scourge of the skies, Captain Vak, had come to town. Though the child knew nothing of his father, his father would recount the day he "conquered" the most beautiful peasant girl on the entire island of Lilivee.  Cpatain Vak, enticed by the tale, grew heavy with want, find her after years for simple purpose to claiming his own conquest. Young Ish'Mael still saw awe and mystery in the world when the dreaded ship plunged a literal shadow over his life.   The captain an elven man cast out of the xenophobic nation of Dirvroka, delighted in the blood-baths he produced on the lands of Rimvalkast. With Bom's blessing. When he set anchor in Vaelnova, Ish'Mael's father believed he would get a chance to finally meet his son after years in the skies. When Captain Vak, not knowing at the time that his elven crewman had fathered a half-breed, grew angry with disgust. Ish'Mael, without having shared a word with his father, watched him get cut down for this "blasphemy", never understanding why.   Captain Vak ordered the town be burned down and half half-breed abominations be destroyed. He turned to begin the task on Ish'Mael, not expecting the town to rise up. Lucinda to Ish'Mael, running to hide him. She begged the gods for strength, for justice, for anything. Lucinda barely hid Ish'Mael when the cries of others drew her away.   Lucinda, begging the god's to help, watched helpless as the captain continued to kill off the town as punishment for harboring what he saw as an abomination; the mixed race children common of all the towns of the island. Without an answer to her prayers, her rage grew. To this day, Ish'Mael doesn't know if her wrath called Mahwar, or if it was pure luck that on his tempest moved through the city. What he does know, is that he saw his mother break from him in a flurry of electricity, running down the captain who seemed to glow the blessing of Bom.   Through the evening and into the night, the town fought back against the pirates.  The small town was a warzone between Bom and Mahwar, played through by mortals. The crops burned, the gunpowder smoked, and the fated child could do nothing but run and hide, taking refuge in his room as the roof fell around him in ash.  In his last memories, he recalled his mother's final embrace as she returned to him, the storm of Mahwar enveloping them both. He heard her whisper, felt her love crackle across his skin, and a deep sleep befall him. He would later be told they found him curled against a stack of coal, the men that rescued him shocked as they tried to dig him from the ash, the only survivor of the fires.  His father was among the dead, but not the captain.   Months later, a dying crewman of the captains would recount the horror of that night that the butcher of Valenova, of the man exiled from Divroka for his sadistic nature, whose smile was twisted and demented, it earned him the name of the Smiling Pirate.

Burning Drive

Ish'Mael was brought to Skemnavla to recover, but only Baroness Kalova's House for the Lost would take in what they believed was a hopeless cause.  They didn't expect that Ish'Mael would survivor, they didn't realize that he was gifted, that he was filled with red visions of Cap. Vak's blood boiling in the same fires that Ish'Mael was strong enough to endure.   The House of the Lost taught reverence for the Embodied Gods and sought to guide the children into devotion for Holona, Tilavana, and Nur.  Ish'Mael never felt their draw however.  He worshiped his own personal demon; the thirst for vengeance on the Smiling Pirate.  When his magical talent began to manifest, when the small shocks of electricity turned to bolts of power, he began using them to right the small wrongs he saw every day in his home.  Every bully he drew blood on gave him a small taste of pleasure, a vision of the future where it was the pirate on the ground before him instead of some pitiful kid. This ecstasy and pleasure drew Bom's attention, and from there, Ish'mael felt a bond between himself and the goddess that delighted in his drive, and blessed his power.   When he became an adult, his drive for Cap. Vak brought him to the Banshee Company on the promise that he would see the world and grow rich. They sailed all along eastern Rimvalkast, commissioned by the Queen of Skemnavla, to take foreign vessels. During the 7 Years War between the Alliance of Eight, led by Valtaska, and the Island Republic of Ligato, Ish'Mael distinguished himself on the seas as a brilliant crewman, able to perform marine drops despite the incoming fire and arcane shots.  After the war, he was given a generous reward and made helman of the Phantom. It was on the new flagship that he met Drosko Silvold the dwarven adventurer who seemed to know a little of everything. They sailed the skies together for 6 months before Ish'Mael finally met the dreaded pirate once more.   Over the Black Hills, Ish'Mael piloted the Phantom as it engaged the Smiling Pirate's brutal ship, Iron Fortune, with the sound of fire and thunder. They traded blows heavily. The Captain of the ship took shrapnel blast, bleeding on deck, and as Ish'Mael steered toward the Iron Fortune, he could see the bloody smile of Vak as a carefully aimed ballista shot out, colliding with the First Mate and heavily damaging the ship. Despite the calls for retreat, Ish'Mael felt the thunder and rage of Mahwar rise up, so he took command and order full mast, directly at the Iron Fortune.   The ships shuttered and Ish'Mael was shaken to the deck. As he rose up, Captain Vak, glowing with might of Bom, stood over him and struck at him. Drosko tried to help, but was flung from the ship by a mighty blow, leaving Ish'Mael to contend with the Smiling Pirate. Summoning a great storm in himself, he fought back, but couldn't overcome the pirates pure might.   A twist of the winds, the ships spun. Ish'Mael found himself thrown into his quarters as a mast shifted and trapped him. Captain Vak's face was visible through the window as he laughed, a red flame sparking up behind him. The Captain, having killed all of Ish'Mael's crew, left him for dead, his burning ship crashing into Smugglers Foley. Ish'Mael burst through the windows, casting Feather Fall as he plummeted, escaping death, but was taunted on the long journey down, watching the butcher sail away on his broken but functional vessel.   Years later, Ish'Mael never overcame the shame of losing both his ship and his revenge. He worked on ships on the southern coast of Rimvalkast, but the drudgery of the common sailor left him feeling empty. Bom seemed to smile on him when a letter from his old friend Drosko invited him to join a new guild, the promise of revenge seemingly hinted in the ink of the words.

A Fresh Company - The First Year

In the first year that Ish'Mael was involved with the guild, he's been a part of several missions that have garnered fame for Drosko's Unnamed Guild. This list includes:
  • Helping remove necrotic giant spiders from the city of Ridav,
  • Rescuing (...and?) the daughter to the Head of the Mountain Lancers.

The Quest of the Cult

Now, with Ashara, Embra Shimmerdew, and Victalyassa Arcanscape, Ish'Mael has been helping to discover, and ultimately root out, a cult that has begun plaguing Tanaviak. Only time will tell if he is successful...   While searching for information on the cult in Skad, Ish'Mael found himself suddenly, and violently, pulled to a strange realm. He discovered quickly he was in the presence of his very goddess: Bom. She demanded that he entertain her with his quest of vengeance, that he hunt down the Smiling Pirate and kill him in a spectacular show. He was eager to agree, as his goal in life was to get his vengeance, but something about the way Bom demanded that she be entertained was unsettling. He was returned to his companions while they were securing passage back to Valtaska, having already gathered information in Skad.   Filling him in on their return, they were tasked with covertly gathering information on the Rann family, the wealthiest family in all of Tanaviak. Eager to appear in his stylish gear, Ish'Mael took charge of questioning, when not helping his dear friend Ashara from reacting with rage on all the entitled nobles. Seeking to go as close to the top as he could, he approached the teenage daughter of the Rann family, Silisia Rann. Taking an eye for the debonair skyman, Ish'Mael openly fanned her feelings to gather more information, successfully aquiring a job for them to reach out to her brother Thorikar.
