Victalyassa Arcanscape Character in Cycles of Infinity | World Anvil

Victalyassa Arcanscape

A short Marleek woman growing up in the dregs of Skemnavla, Victalyessa, better known as Vic or Victal to her closest companions, is a master of her body. Blessed by the great senses of her species, and learning to hone the wirey, malnourished body she grew into, she has proven a lethal fighter and willing to go through great extremes to provide for those she loves.

Humble Origins

Living in Skemnavla during the flooded years, when the great Hurricane demolished most of the great cities ports and washed away the riches, Victalyassa was seemingly destined for a poor life. Her father was never around, her mother was a junkie and a drunk, and fifteen other siblings that rushed around like a storm all made her life a chaotic one filled with many hungry nights and a constant struggle for any resources, physical or emotional. At the age that many would start schooling, Victalyassa was learning to instead care for her family in the ways her mother wouldn't.   Young and without a proper education, Victalyassa took to the streets like many other urchins. With the higher purpose of providing for others though, her wits were never devoured by the desperation of pure survival like here peers. Her sharp mind would pick up on the successful rogues and scoundrels of the underworld she grew in, learning to mimic their movements and how to slip her fingers into pockets to steal. It didn't take long for these practices to be used in order to grab food from the unsuspecting in order to keep herself and her family alive.   Even at such a young age, her natural aptitude towards this art allowed her to move from scrapes for survival to cash for more. Once she could slip coins from purses, she discovered she could buy more food than she could carry. In time, her skill would allow her time to spend with her family, and she taught these valuable skills to her siblings, turning her family into a blood-gang of thieves.   Like Victalyassa herself, her siblings were naturals. They learned how to pull coins from a closed fist before they could form coherent sentences. Their youth gave them an air of innocence that was lost in the very streets they lived. Victalyassa, as if she were their mothers herself, felt pride in their abilities, and let them move from student to master within months.   With success came complacency. Their youth made them seem innocent and harmless, so no one bothered to touch them, but when the family started to make a noticeable change in the streets, they became targets themselves. Victalyassa's world came crashing in when their very success became the source of so much pain. Her youngest sibling, Mikellin, was caught when trying to pluck the purse of a rumored cut-throat of the city. In retaliation, he brutalized the 4-year-old child, leaving him to bleed to death in the streets.   Victalyassa was devastated.   Swearing vengeance, she began to hone her body around the violence that would give her what she needed.   Despite this lifetime of experience and tragedy, it hadn't even been a decade. Victalyassa wasn't even quite a teenager yet and her psyche had been assaulted by the cruel world. As her body began to change and grow her direction in life did too. She decided to devote herself to protecting the very family she was providing for, and meant to do so in every facet possible.   Only 11 years old, she used her nimble body to pick fights for the sole purpose of understanding what violence was, learning how to fight and how to defend against it. Drunkards were always the quickest to a fight. When she wasn't brawling herself, she'd watch the adventurers fight each other, learning how they swayed and jabbed. Her sharp mind adopted their techniques, learning to sway and feign stumbling as she fought back. She could strike and dodge in a fight and flight tactic that became ingrained.   Age wizened her as she grew up in a split life between the streets and the bars. The taverns of Skemnavla became a second home, and she learned from them more than just how to fight. Her mind grew to understand the power of coin and the intricacy of wealth. She knew she needed to do more than just steal to provide. She knew she needed to go out like the sailors, adventurers, and merchants that frequented the taverns. She needed to provide more money so her family didn't need to steal and be vulnerable like before.   Knowing she'd leave, Victalyassa taught the eldest of her siblings, Vellnina, how to fight and how to provide. She prepared herself, for the long journey she knew she needed to take. At the age of 20, her life was set before her with the ultimate goal of finding a truly safe place for her family to live and prosper. In her mind, a castle like the ones the adventurers always spoke of, sounded ideal.

Drosko and the Guild

Soon after leaving home, Victalyassa had found herself wandering a bit lost and getting into fights with patrons of the various taverns she ended up at. By fate or design, she wound up at one of these taverns on a night when Drosko was enjoying a drink. The distraction was unwanted, but he witnessed the young Marleek fighting unnaturally well compared to those around them.   Having trouble with his own mission in town, he offered her a small cut of pay to come along as hired muscle. With her help, Drosko was able to quickly finish his mission, offering the cut he promised to Victalyassa, who was eager for more. Drosko was happy to accept her on as a new partner.
