Galileo - O'Neil 2

Location: L-3

Galileo is the smallest of the three O'Neil cylinders in LEO. It was complete the same year as the first NASA manned-mission to Mars departs.

Demographics

The population on Galileo colony consist of 4 different groups: The executives, the managers, the laborers, and visitors/vacationers. Each are made up of different social and ethnic groups.

Elysium Movie
Executives
The executive managers are appointed by ESA and report up the chain the the CEO of the colony. Their social status is part of the elite within the station. They will often have their own dwellings as well as space for their families. They get the best rations and have credit to use amongst the different stores and restaurants in the colony. They compose around 1% of the colony's population. The ethnicities of this group is composed of mostly western Europeans from the EEC.

Management
The managers are the direct authority over the laborers. They do the administrative work within the colony. They lives are a step better, with private quarters. They are not as luxurious as the executives, but miles above the laborers situation. Security also falls within this tier of the population. The managers are about 5% of the population. Ethnicity of this group is mixed. Though there are more Europeans than Africans compared to the Highriders. See also O'Neil Two "Galileo" - Corporations for a list of various corporations on the colony.

Laborers
The laborers are the ones that maintain the systems on the colony and are mostly Highriders. The Highriders of Galileo work on the infrastructure, doing repairs, and another minimal task. They are cramped into bunk rooms, housing upwards of 100 people in one room, stack 5 bunks high. Laborers have very little space to call their own. They have very little free time or the ability to indulge in any relaxation. The laborers represent about 80% of the populations on the colony. Similar to all Highriders of Galileo, the ethnicities of this group are mixed. The majority being African and Asian decent.

Others
The remain population are visitor, passerbys, and tourists.

Government

Galileo is controlled by ESA. The overseer of the station is the Chief Executive Officer Enzo Dimont. He manages the facility similar to a corporation, with executive board managing the different departments on board. ESA gets report from Enzo, but he is given the freedom to implement policy as he sees fit.

Districts

The districts on the colony are group into if they are exposed (top floor of the panels) or under (the sub level of the panels).

The Garden

Elysium Movie
This is a combination of residences and tourism. There are a few hotels scattered about. The residences are mixed in with small suburb-like communities that have parks and other facilities to the residence and tourists. Some upper managers have apartments here as well.

The Kingdom

This terra panel is were the executives have residential housing. There are parks and some farming. There are also a few restaurants and shops mixed in amongst the the areas. The luxury displayed in this district is the most elaborate, though visitors don't see much of a difference, the residence do notice. Access to this district is very restricted to only residence or to visitors who have been granted access passes. These passes have strict time limits. It will transmit to the facility security when they are expired.

The Farm

galileo_farm.jpg
This district is the terra panel that produces the majority of food and oxygen on the station. There is no residential housing or tourism in this panel. It is mostly filled with farming WADs with some service personnel required for other tasks.

The Labyrinth

This section is the sublevel under The Garden district. There are several corporate facilities in the Labyrinth. Manufacturing, research, and business dealings happen through out this panel. The corporate sections are not as restrictive than the areas monitored by the colonies security, but personnel needs to be a corporate citizen to be in the areas.

The Maze

This section is the sublevel under The Kingdom district. This section is the most restrictive as it contains the majority of colony support systems such as water, powerplant, and other critical systems. This is also were the administration offices of the facility are located. Laborers are heavily monitored in this area and security officers are a constant reminder of how tightened down this area is.

The Dungeon

This section is the sublevel under The Farm district. This areas is where all Highriders reside, unless they are required to be closer to their duties when required for immediate service. Security is a constant presence, but not as severe as it is in The Maze.

This is also one of the least maintained and has constant issues. Often power and other resources are diverted to the farm over the living areas. This continues to be a major frustration of the laborers and Watu wa Pilule. Many incidents have happened throughout the colony existence. Kuno Heinsohn has installed more surveillance as well as implement stricter policy around Highriders organizing.

Guilds and Factions

As mentioned in the demographics, the colony is made up of different social tiers. Each tier has different factions and groups.

High Riders

Highriders are split up into different families/tribes/packs in the colony. All are consider part of the Wata wa Pilule nation, though they are not as organization as other nations like Le Bure. There has been attempts to organized, however due to the security crackdowns and raids that take place, it has been a challenge to meet in large assemblies. Also the day to day surveillance and monitoring on the Highriders are a consist deterrent.

There are several tribes that have form. Most are composed members with the same bunk rooms, while others form within the work areas. Each is independent of one another with their goals and needs. Here is a list of some of the families currently growing in numbers:

Architecture

O'Neil 2 consists of 2 opposed spinning cylinders, Cylinder Alpha and Cylinder Beta. Beta is scaffolding that is holding raw materials (asteroids and other space materials) and the Alpha is the living colony that hosts the inhabitants of the colony. The 2 cylinders are crucial for the stablity of the colony as one cylinder would erratically flip with devastating consequences without the other.

The cylinders are 16 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide. Cylinder Alpha has 3 alternating glass panels and earth panels to support the colony. Below the terra floors (the exposed inner surface) exists network of tunnels and access ways that has the systems to support the colony.

Each of the three panels consists of an area 51.2km (3.2km x 16km). The "top" floor consists of grow fields, parks, water, with some residences of upper management. One panels is strictly dedicated for food and oxygen generation. The second panel is for recreation and tourism to the station. The last is a combination of residences, parks, and some food generation. Each panel has 1 sub-level under the terra floor. The sublevel contains administration, infrastructure, manufacturing, laboratories, and living quarters for the crew and residences of the station.
