Christchurch Cemetery

South edge of town

Christchurch is the newest cemetery in New Jerusalem. Opened in the 1850s, rich and poor find burial here. Despite the inevitable reference to Christchurch Episcopal, these plots are non-denominational. The Congregational church is handiest to this location.   The cemetery is surrounded by an eight-foot-high stone wall topped with iron spikes. Entrance is through the main gate only, located at the foot of Peabody Avenue. The gate is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. A watchman lives near the gate. Climbing the wall is possible but requires a ladder or a lot of help. Once atop the wall an individual will have to be careful to avoid injuring himself on the rusty iron spikes set in the top.   This burial ground is about half filled at the moment. There is a large, old mausoleum half way into the grounds where local artist Hagan Wilson is buried.   Many of the Asian residents in this part of town will not go into this place, and most will only walk past it on the other side of the road. Many of their spiritual advisors have warned them about evil spirits coming from the ground here.
