Karaganos Palace

This building was the former Royal Palace for Karmis' deposed ruling family. Now it is the headquarters for the Majaran governor and the royal residence when the Empress Atheneis or Queen Floret is present in the city. The palace is located on the Royal Island, along narrow island that houses the Imperial garrison The island is walled with a 15' wall roughly following the riverbank. The wall has numerous defensive towers, most mount some form of artillery engines. The palace is really a complex of several buildings with Montour's keep, a large stone tower marking the eastern tip of the island. In the center of the island is the palace which includes the main barracks for the city garrison. Finally on the western end of the island is the cavalry barracks and a large complex of stables. Bridges consisting of stone arches connect the island to both the north and south banks of the River Karm. Gatehouses guard the island end of both bridges.

Purpose / Function

The palace serves as both the administrative hub and Imperial military headquarters for the Kingdom of Karmis.

Alterations

The palace has been built and renovated over the course of four centuries. Relatively few sections of the palace are original dating back to the era of the Sallian Empire. The royal quarters were started perhaps 250 years ago with a significant renovation that created the great courtyard about fifty years ago.

Architecture

The Palace complex represents construction from several different periods with the stout and rather plain Montour's Keep representing the oldest part of the complex. The inner court of the palace is the newest section with the inner courtyard being surrounded by a two story cloister with elaborately carved pillars and a tiled roof.

History

The palace complex was started as a Sallian Empire fortress some five hundred years ago when Mountour keep and the surrounding fortifications were built. After the collapse of the Empire the Duke of Karmis established themselves on the island building a large wooden palace next to Montour's keep. Some two hundred years ago the palace burned down and the King of Karmis built a new stone palace in the center of the island and extended the walls for the entire length of the island.
