High Asang

High Asang – This is a community of displaced southerners located deep in the Spine on an isolated plateau. High Asang is a horseshoe shaped settlement made of cliff dwellings. At the foot of the settlement is an ice cold lake feed by a waterfall that comes down the Cliffside roughly dividing the cliff complex in half. The lake in turn flows down the valley where it is intersected by various streams and small rivers until it turns into a wide and fast flowing river which rushed over the Great Falls of Tallis. The people of High Asang worship a deity known as the Wind King (Annarath). Every season on a moonless night a human sacrifice is made to the Wind King. The sacrifices are made on a small island in the center of the Lake of High Asang. Here the priests and priestesses chain a young man or woman who has been ritually selected. They leave the victim chained to the slab and leave the island. In the morning only a fleshless skeleton will be found. The inhabitants of High Asang are known for the production of exquisite black and white pottery and crystal jewelry. They also trade lumber and high quality woolen cloth with the people of the lowlands. The people of High Asang herd sheep, farm fish in the mountain lakes and grow root vegetables for their food supply. They also trade their products for grain from the lowlands. Those who have attacked the people of High Asang have fared poorly. Over the years they have fought off bandits, warlords, Zalarites and nomadic raiders. According to the reports of survivors from these attacks dark skinned, leather winged creatures with terrible fangs and claws have descended from the surrounding mountains to tear apart the attacking forces. These creatures are known as the children of Annarath.

Defences

The main defense of high Asang is its relative inaccessibility. The road between High and Low Asang goes though a series winding gorges that make easy sites for ambushes. The cliff dwellings where most of the citizens live can be made inaccessible by pulling up stairs and ladders and removing bridges between the cliff structures. The cliff dwellings burrow deep into the cliffs with many small and large chambers that the inhabitants can use for shelter and store food in case of siege.
