Zareb

The former headquarters of the Zalarite Order sits at the center of a high grassy plateau. The city is strongly fortified with its entrances secred by three heavily fortified gatehouses. The immediate area around the city to a barren gravel flatland reaching out about a mile from the walls. The flats are dotted with stone monoliths that were part of a now deactivated magical defense system that once made the city all but unassailable.   The city is dense with most buildings having three or four stories. Buildings are universally built out of stone, wood is forbidden due to the danger of fire, and roofed with slate. The city receives water through a network of public fountains and is drained by a well-designed system of sewers.   The city’s many Zalarite Temples have either been demolished or turned over to other sects including a resident coven of Khanna and the Alyites. The city is now part of the Majaran Empire and is governed by the youngest daughter of the last Zalarite queen and her paramour.   The city is heavily garrisoned by the Empire and its Alyite allies. Some 1,000 Alyite Sisters are garrisoned in the city and 2,000 Imperial troops are posted there. The Alyite force is mainly cavalry, the imperial force is primarily made of up of infantry and artillery troops.

Demographics

The city has a mix of humans and Corgerians including Southrons, Northrons, and mountaineers. Small communities of Danites and Dark Corgerians are also present. As a result of Zalarite rule, which prohibited men from living within the city, the population is still about 70 percent female.

Government

The city is effectively under military occupation. It has a large garrison of Majaran and Alyite troops maintaining the rule of Queen  Ellista, effectively the city's puppet ruler and a vassal of the Majaran Empire.  Governance is directed by the Council of Zareb which included Queen Ellista, the Commander of the Alyite garrison, the commander of the Majaran garrison, the Majaran appointed governor of the city and the Master of Works, the official in charge of the city's physical infrastructure.

Industry & Trade

The city provides an alternative route for north-south trade for those who do not want to use the Great North Road. The Majaran Empire collects low tolls for use of the roads that pass through Zareb believing that the increased trade will more than makeup for the loss of revenue.

Infrastructure

The city's streets are paved with cobblestone under-girded by network of sewers and drains. The city is served by piped water that flows into public fountains and into the more important villages.

Architecture

The city is built almost entirely from stone and mortar. Roofs are high peaked to shed snow. Slate, wood shingles and thatch are used as roofing materials.

Geography

Zareb is located on a palteau deep in the Spine mountain. The city sits at an altitude just over 5,000 feet.
