Augustin Souris

Arch-Magistrate Augustin Souris

Augustin Souris (birth name Augustine Fledermaus) was a traitorous half-elf vampire that served as arch-magistrate of the Kingdom of Larian in the year 4282. In secret, he was the teacher of Amelie Dumas.

History

Early Life

Augustine Fledermaus was born to a dark elf mother and a human father of unknown origin around 150 years ago in the Petty Kingdom of Odenbruck. During his early life, he was raised to be a wizard as he was seen to have natural magical talent. He studied carefully, but soon came into contact with the necromantic arts. They intrigued him.   Out of his curiosity, he came under the apprenticeship of a wizard named Renauld, a necromancer who was studying the works of Si-Wang in hopes to achieve lichdom for himself. Augustine was careful, working with his master to study the secrets of the Void, but soon Augustin realized the consequences of lichdom: that is, needing to die. Augustine did not desire death, he wanted eternal life. He thus misled his master in secret, showing him that the Void was actually the Shadow Realm. Thus, Renauld concentrated his power with the essence of shadow to gain lichdom.   Evidently, however, this power over death made many believe he was a warlock and thus he fled from the Danelands with his master Renauld. They found refuge in the region of Gotha. In particular, in the town of Vine, they were rather celebrated as a great mages. Evidently Augustine caught the eye of some of the Dwarven governors who controlled the region. They gave him positions of power within their courts, protecting them from enemy schemes with his magic, and also transforming treasure with his expertise in transmutation magic.

As Arch-Magistrate

Augustine was not a fool; he could see the rise of growing hostility between all the people of Larian and the Dwarves by the time he ended his first century of life. Thus, he betrayed the King of Manneruck when Sir Percivia rebelled against him. Augustine changed his name to a Gothan variety, going by the name "Augustin Souris" and evidently keeping a sharp eye on the development of things in the newly independent Kingdom of the Goths. He was close with Queen Percivia and her sons, advising them all in their political doings. He was eventually promoted to Arch-Magistrate.   During this, Augustin betrayed his master Renauld. Renauld had completed the rite of "lichdom", but was soon killed by fleeing dwarves, which Augustin helped with. Renauld thus had his soul claimed by Morganine, who turned him into a Nightmare Tyrant and remained forever bound to the Shadow Realm as a Skull Lord. Augustin was rewarded greatly by Morganine, and continued to gain secrets from her.   When the Kingdom of Goth divided, he sided with Gabriel the Blind as the King of Larian. Along with the bard Blondel, he fed Gabriel much wisdom to all his doings. As Arch-Magistrate, he overlooked much of the law, and soon managed to purchase his own castle within the countryside outside of Fenestein, where he did much of his work alone. He also ended up marrying a young woman named Annabelle.   In a trip to Manneruck, he stumbled upon the aspiring young mage named Amelie Dumas. She tried to hide her study of necromancy from him, but instead of ratting her out, Augustin corrected her in some of her necromantic spells. He became a new wizard master for her. As Amelie grew up, so did her powers of necromancy also grow. Eventually she was sent out in the world to show the world to practice more of her magic as a pupil, while Augustin watched closely.   During this time, he was eventually rewarded the gift of Vampirism, in exchange to cooperate with Morganine's plan to plunge Larian into a nightmare of war for her wicked desires. Augustin obeyed, and started to plot slowly against the Kingdom of Larian in order to keep his gift.

A Crusade in Larian

Evidently, things began to make a turn for the worst for the arch-magistrate. His wife Annabelle died within his arms shortly before the skirmish of 4282 between Larian soldiers and Halfian soldiers. In his grief, he found comfort in his pupil Amelie at least being a successful wizard, and he watched her progress closely.   In the same year, Augustin began his plot against the throne of Larian. He started to use enchantment magic on King Gabriel, which came under the notice of the bard Prince Philippe. When Augustin figured out Philippe was onto him, he had Philippe and his soldiers get ambushed by soldiers on the border of Halfia and turned Philippe and his cohorts into helpless animals. He imprisoned them into Castle Odo and hired a dragon named Byldrax to guard them. Evidently, he put in motion for his plan for a false rescue by some adventurers, which led even his pupil Amelie Dumas to be trapped in the Shadowfell after they found the prince. As the rescuers and the prince were away, Augustin drank from the blood of King Gabriel, killing him.   He installed Ieasbreda of Halfia as the Queen of Larian and all of Gotha, controlling her as a vampire spawn puppet. However, after she had died, he fled to his manor within a private pocket dimension, where Amelie and her cohorts chased him.
