Thorgean Liberation

The large scale assassination of the Dryskhell Family

The Conflict

Prelude

The queendom Thorgea had taken over almost all of Zvaaraes and their other neighboring kingdoms under the reign of the Dryskhell Family. A secret meeting with the Golden Blade, a renowned mercenary group on the western isles of Kan'estria was held, where Zvaarian ambassadors, many master assassins and the Warblade herself attended. The Golden Blade lost thousands of warriors during the Dryskhell wars, so they were hellbent on coming to an agreement with the Zvaarians.

Eight. Eight of our best Blades will be provided, as well as I myself. They will have all ressources neccessary handed to them by you, everything they decide will be granted, and no door will be closed before their eyes. I will personally plan the coup with them and will need your utmost discretion while doing so. Noone outside this room, not even your husbands and wives, not even your dogs and cats will hear from this.
— Warblade

From that day onwards, nine blades worked day and night on a plan to infiltrate the most secure base on all of Montoora. Through several defensive barriers, undetected by over a thousand guards, inside the queens castle, to kill not only the current queen Khourilde Wholemountain Crown, but also anyone eligible to the throne.

Execution

While a detailled short story was put out by the scribes of the Golden Blade, called the "Nine Blades", the rapid version is as follows:

Spoiler for the manuscript ahead. (For the people reading during SC2023, the manuscript will most likely not be written by now though).

The Warblade constructed a plan to infiltrate Thorgea as the thing Torgea most needed turing those times, soldiers. One of the two trickster mages was adept in weaving and leatherworking and broke down and reconstructed the uniforms of different Thorgean soldiers. To pass through the strict security measures, they had to not only wear, but also look and act like Dryskhell Thorgeans. Nothing a bit of face changing and acting practice couldn't handle. After infiltrating the soldiers camps, they were able to be the party to greet the supply troops at the battlefields edge, where they then had a direct link and vehicle back to the queendoms capital. Once in the capital city Telum, the disguise was changed, race and face was altered and the personality of cooks, guards, butlers and taste testers were taken on. With the access to every inch of the castle and a deadly trick, the nine infiltrators managed to poison the queen, assassinate the family members and hide their bodies temporarily until their escape. Almost exactly on the dot, once they arrived back in Zvaaraes, news reached them that the royal family had died, and the nine mercenaries succeeded on taking down an entire queendom.

There is obviously a lot more to this story, so look out for manuscript updates!

Outcome

The remaining Dryskhell family members were in shock. The Zvaarians estimated that once all the female members died, that they would abandon their rules and try to justify a king. Now that no direct descendants of the old queen were left, neither female nor male, and all other Dryskhell were all nearing eighty plus, no authority was present. The guards turned on their leaders, the oppressed population subsequently spoke out publicly and sided with the other kingdoms, peacefully handing over won territory. Thorgea was in disarray for the next few years without a direct leader.

Aftermath

A couple years later, after putting up makeshift laws and controlling hightened crime with publicly instantiated police forces, a diplomatic system was put in place. A board of dwarves was elected, representing the different counties and their interests. Structured society was brought back to life under the roof of this council. Thorgea became a neutral state, producing mostly war-related technologies and selling them all around the globe.

Belligerents

Strength

The dryskhell military had thousands of foot soldiers, as well as hundreds of border soldiers and around a hundred royal guards inside the castle. The dryskhell also have lots of non-magical firepower such as canons, and naturally, mages, protective barriers and defensive trap magiks.
Nine mercenaries. The Warblade of Liberation as the strategian. Two one-eyed sniper brothers. Two mad mages with a feel for magic repellants and traps. One gunslinging brute. One rogue from which no door stays shut. Two shadow assassins, being the heart of the operation.

Casualties

Five. The last Dryskhell queen Khourilde Wholemountain Crown (17), her mother (27), father (28), and brothers (23 and 21).
unknown, since the Assassins of the Golden Blade are the most elusive mercenaries on Montoora.

Objectives

To detect a threat they don't know is coming.
To kill the royal family and get out of their territory without anyone noticing.

Nine Blades

As for monetary reimbursement, we will not put a price on this mission, though we take it that the Zvaarian royalty will be forever in our debt. A debt that wont be paid after one, two or three favours.

An interesting and engaging read for sure! This is the first thing I've read of this world and it's definitely got me interested.

Though I can't wait to see the details of the mission, you hint at the truth of such affairs well. Strict secrecy, and tenseness. Assassination is truly the tactic of the desperate, and that is because it doesn't solve the problem unless you get EVERYONE who could step into that leader role. Elsewise all you do is create a very temporary power vacuum which will likely result in someone even more of a headache taking command. So this is definitionally an all or nothing desperation gambit.   With the bits you've given us, it definitely reads like that was the situation, so that part is believeable. You've laid out the bare bones of the plan, and that part, while believeable, I have to think will not be near as smooth in the manuscript. I expect a bribe or two, maybe an extra body or two. No way they fooled absolutely everyone that easily. Poison is also a finicky beast so I imagine the nerves the whole time, because poison isn't a sure thing like a blade to the heart or a bullet to the brain. Size of the person matters. Unknown health conditions can matter. Body fat percentage can matter. There are so many things that can go horribly wrong with poisoning, which makes it, while a common tactic, generally not the ideal one, more one you fall back to when no other more efficient option is viable. All in all, I love the concept, and am interested on how you sell it come the manuscript, which I will definitely need to keep an eye out for and read, because this can be an amazing, harrowing, tense and thrilling tale, one that even when there is no direct high pace action 'on screen' as it were can have a reader sweating along with your characters, white knuckling right along with them. Such a neat approach to this prompt well done.

thanks for this in depth comment. you hit the nail on the head, not everything went as smoothly as maybe depicted here, but i didn't want to write paragraphs over paragraphs in this article (that's where the manuscript comes in, and also i dont have every detail figured out just yet).   The things i wrote here are the quintessence that is told throughout the realms today by those that only faintly know what happened, leaving out hardships and struggles and even how the heck they escaped from there. The manuscript will be the second i've ever written, so I hope it'll be up to standard for readers.   Thanks again though, I'm glad you like the article <3
