History of Calcaria

The following is an overview of important events in Calcaria's history. The timeline is divided into three ages: Before Empire (BE), Golden Age (GA), and After Empire (AE).

Before the Empire of Arran

-4000BE to -1BE

Covering most of Calcaria's history, this era is often referred to as the mythical age from a human perspective. To the Elves, it covers the Age of Time and Life, the Age of Music and Peace, the Age of War and Strife, and the Age of Unknown.

    Arrival of the Amari
    Celestial / Cosmic

    The first Era of Calcaria begins with the arrival of the Amari. The arrival of these beings brings about the shaping of Calcaria, the awakenng of the Eldar, and a series of events that led to several wars and calamities called the Malediction. This period was marked by divine upheaval, during which the Amari created the Races and established the foundations of civilization.

  • 3999 BE - 1000 BE
    The Malediction
    Disaster / Destruction

    "It was not the divine magic that caused the Malediction, but the arrogance of mortals and their endless interest in the arcane. Elves and their ilk could not contain their curiosity and plunged the world into unimaginable horror. It was the clerics and the paladins that stood against the terrors conjured by the wild magic, and Danu's will alone that saved the races of Calcaria."

    Founding of the Church of Danu
    Religious event

    While most civilised nations follow the god of the sun & light, only the Empire and subsequent kingdoms of Albion follow the Church of Danu itself. Nevertheless, the Church claims dominion over 60 million souls through Albion alone, and as such is the second highest political entity besides the local and national nobility, not to mention almost four thousand years older...   (3 years into Age of War and Strife, after the apperance of Danu)

  • 347 BE
    The First Dragons
    Population Migration / Travel

    A group of warriors with the ability to turn into dragons arrive in Calcaria through a portal. They conquer territories in northern Ezura by defeating the locals and become the sole rulers.

  • 339 BE
    The Founding of Narthex
    Founding

    The Dragon Masters of Narthex establish their kingdom forcefully on a large penninsula in northern Ezura. In dragon form, they hatch eggs, giving rise to dragonkin servants in the years to follow.

  • 335 BE
    The Order of the Last Sky
    Founding

    A new order is established aiming to hunt down the legendary Dragons of the Shing Jea Peninsula.

  • 334 BE - 317 BE
    The Rise of the Dragon Hunters
    Expedition

    Rumors of dragons in northern Ezura start to spread throughout the realm. An expedition called “The Last Sky” is initiated by Gaiden Shinji, organizing groups of ambitious dragon hunters that wish to slay the creatures and claim the treasures of the Shing Jea Peninsula. For many years, hundreds of hunters travelled from Minkuo and further afield to the Shing Jea Peninsula, but none returned victorious.

    The Saurian Race
    Life, Birth

    The Saurians, crafted by a dragon on the Shing Jea Peninsula, faithfully serve their dragon masters. They amass gold in the mines, defend against invaders, and combat remnants of the native tribes.

The Golden Age of the Empire of Arran

1GA to 1211GA

The Golden Age roughly covers the 1200 years of expansion and prosperity Albion experienced under the empire formed by its first and possible god-like Emperor: Arran

    Founding of the Empire of Arran
    Founding

    The founding of the Empire is the proudest moment of the race of Man on Calcaria. It covered the largest contiguous stretch of land owned by the human race and still informs much of the decision making and thinking of the current age. Its values and way of life live on, even in these times of political squabbling and endless warring.

    Founding of the Victrix Legion
    Military action

    Shortly after the founding of the Empire, Arran raised his first legion of the name Victrix. These men were chosen for their bravery when they first crossed the Alvus Sea from Eridas with their Emperor and his 500 ships, and proved vital in the defeating of many enemies of Man, both external and domestic.

    Founding of the Invictus Legion
    Military action

    In the year 222GA the Invictus Legion was raised from the ground up and trained under the men of the Victrix Legion, each man personally training another. From this event stems its motto of "Bravery breeds bravery", which they proved time and time again after its founding.

  • 272 GA
    Defeat of the Lich Ruhn and his Undead Horde
    Military action

    After his failed invasion of Albion, the wicked Lich Ruhn retreated into his stronghold of Kae Andros underneath the mountains of central Temposa. There Arran followed him with 10,000 men, and Arran alone emerged carrying the Lich's head.

    The Disappearance of Arran
    Life, Death

    Shortly after Arran returned to Albion after he defeated the lich Ruhn he retreated into his chambers and passed all administrative duties to his advisers. There he supposedly remained until his disappearance one year later, proclaimed dead across the realm. Though he never reappeared, his death was never proven and no scholarly sources indicate its cause. The title of Emperor passed on to his head adviser, Emperor Justinian.

    The Imperial Crisis
    Revolution

    The Imperial Crisis, also known as the Collapse, was the period of history where the Empire was dissolved and replaced by the kingdoms of Albion. The crisis began in 1162GA with the assassination of Emperor Severus Alexander by his own troops.

After the Empire of Arran

1AE and beyond

The current Age, humanity finds itself isolated in walled cities of a decaying civilisation desperately holding onto the values instilled by the Empire that came before. Now mere kingdoms, the current age holds both danger and opportunity.

    Founding of the first Kingdom of Aumont
    Founding

    Under King Odo I, the western peoples of Albion formed under the Kingdom of Aumont after the fall of the Empire. Seeking to bring security to a chaotic time, King Odo sought out Justice, sword of Arran to secure his position as king, and even attracted the last imperial legion, the Invictus Legion, to his side.

    Founding of the Kingdom of Livonia
    Founding

    With the Empire gone, the nobility of Eastern Albion formed under the King Dimitri Romanov I as the kingdom of Livonia, whose dynasty rules to this day under Piotr I.

    Founding of the Lordship of Argosia
    Founding

    The Lordship of Argosia is one of the three Crusader States located in southern Ezura, specifically the Girded Valley. It has occupied the region for more than five centuries, having lost much of its initial splendour and power. Nevertheless, it still boasts a mighty army and defends the southern bank of the Spine of Sat-Jek with both valour and courage.

    Founding of the Principality of Thessalon
    Founding

    The Principality of Thessalon is one of the three Crusader States located in southern Ezura, specifically the Girded Valley. Though it was second to settle the region after Argosia, it has occupied its realm for more than five centuries. During this time it has grown and annexed some of Argosia's former river territory on its northern border.

    The Ride
    Military action

    An angelic being visited the Kingdom of Aumont in search of zealous warriors to launch a crusade into the depths of the Infernum. The surving knights become known as the Hellriders.

    Schism of Aumont
    Political event

    The death of Good King Charles resulted in the schism of Aumont into its Western and Eastern kingdoms, later becoming Sancre and Aumont in its present day. The political turmoil and war that ensued meant the two societies had to rebuild much of their former glory over the following three hundred years.

    Founding of the Margraviate of Achaea
    Founding

    The Margraviate of Achaea is one of the three Crusader States located in southern Ezura, specifically the Girded Valley. It is the youngest realm of the three, and has only occupied the region since 252AE, a mere three centuries ago during the time of schism within Aumont. It brutally annexed most of its territory from either Thessalon, Argosia or 'unclaimed' lands filled with heretics at the time.

    The Seven Years War
    Military: War

    A civil war between Clan Danûsh and Clan Grimchest of Bal Rogmund. The war lasted seven years with no clear victor. Bal Rogmund was soon abandoned after the fighting.

    The Red Coup
    Military: Battle

    The Knight-Commander of Saarthal's chapter of the Order of the Lady, Arnald Séguier, is discovered to be a vampire. Séguier laid siege to Saarthal for three weeks with his undead minions before the arrival of the Companion; which brought about his destruction.

    The Assassination of the Two Crowns
    Life, Death

    With political tensions at an all time high, and Good King Charles III not having produced an heir, the king of West Aumont had him assassinated thinking he could lay rights to the throne. His topmost general and successor, Frederick the Great, quickly ordered a counter-assassination, leaving West Aumont's king's only son, four year old Henry IV, as the head of the state of West Aumont under the watch of Steward Paul II.

    Founding of the new kingdom of Aumont
    Founding

    With the renewed hostility between East and West Aumont, the two kingdoms formally cut ties when West Aumont renamed itself as the Kingdom of Sancre, and East Aumont simply became the Kingdom of Aumont, colloquially known as the kingdom without a king.
