Laurena
The Commune of Laurena (lusian: Comuna de Laurena) is a federal socialist republic in eastern Lusia on the western coast of the Heartland Sea. Its territory also includes several island territories off the mainland, all classified as autonomous regions with their own regional governments.
Laurena is one of the oldest nation states in Lusia. In pre-historic times, it was settled by the Catalin people, a pre-Maurin ethnic group. By the High Bronze Age, the region that is now Laurena was home to several Maurin kingdoms, the largest ones being Catania and Susara. Though the region was fertile and economically prosperous, the Period of Rubble saw most of these kingdoms suffer heavy losses from famine, disease, and raids by sea peoples. As a result, a significant percentage of the region's population migrated in search of less hostile conditions, which would eventually result in the founding of Meros to the southeast.
During the Iron Age, most Maurin lands in Lusia were annexed into the Meron Supremacy, which would leave a lasting legacy in the region's culture, religion, and political life. Under Meron rule, the territory that composes modern Laurena served as the Supremacy's breadbasket, and was therefore split into three provinces to maximize their agricultural output: Lusiana, Valasca, and Litora Superior, creating regional identities that have persisted to some extent into modern day. After the collapse of the Supremacy, the region devolved into decentralized feudalism until the year 980 of the Third Age, when the Kingdom of Laurena was officially founded by King Sebastian I.
At the dawning of the Steel Age, Laurena became a trading power in the Heartland Sea, making it one of the first Heartland Powers. With its advanced navy, the kingdom established several colonial outposts along the eastern Aladeshi coast, allowing the transfer of extremely rare and valuable resources into the Lauren economy. This colonial expansion was initially stable, but after a period of decline in the Lauren political economy, other Heartland Powers overtook and outpaced Laurena's colonial efforts.
In the 12th Century of the Fourth Age, Lusia was overtaken by a wave of revolutionary sentiment than began in Merony in 1129. This wave spread to Laurentina, paving the way for the Liberal Revolution in 1134, which resulted in the exile of the royal family and the establishment of the Lauren Republic.

Meron Collapse
During the collapse of the Meron Supremacy in the decades following the Sundering, the provinces of Laurena initially found themselves in a fortunate geographic position, as they were too far from both the expanding Galts in the north and the migrating Hargens from the east, and were not reached by the onslaught of the Third Scourge. Though they were still affected by climate change, which caused food shortages, the provinces still maintained better food production that most Meron territories. This changed over time, as the strife in the Imperial Core of Meros spread, first as a refugee crisis, and then as Hargen invasions. Eventually, the remnant Meron governments in the Maurin Grasslands also collapsed into smaller warring bands.Kingdom of Laurena
During the Age of Rust, the region was dominated by small fiefdoms and peasant communes, with a few larger noble houses exerting greater influence over their neighbours. Over time, a collection of wars and royal marriages led to the founding of the Kingdom of Laurena, in 980-3a. In the 12th century of the Third Age, much of the feudal structure of the land was centralized under the authority of King Lazaro II, a model which would eventually be replicated by neighbouring powers.Liberal Revolution
